Mirena is a small plastic T-shaped contraceptive device that contains the active ingredient levonorgestrel (progesterone hormone). It is an intrauterine system (IUS) that is inserted into the womb in a similar way to a contraceptive coil. Once inserted it steadily releases the levonorgestrel into the womb (uterus). This serves to reduce the thickness of the womb lining and can result in a light cycle or no periods. Nova T an intrauterine device (IUD). The IUD has a coil made of copper. This causes sperm to lose their motility. This prevents fertilization of the egg. The IUD also changes cervical mucus, which can make it more difficult for the sperm to enter the womb. Finally, if an egg is fertilized, the IUD prevents it from implanting in the lining of the uterus. Doctors To determine which coil will suit you a counselling session with a doctor is initially required. During this appointment the doctor will discuss with you the suitability of each coil and other long term contraception. Once you and your doctor have discussed and decided on the most appropriate contraception you will be asked to make an appointment to see one of our nurses and complete a coil request form. Nurses One of our Practice Nurses will take a high vaginal swab, similar to a smear test, checking for any bacterial/thrush infection and a Chlamydia swab (sexually transmitted infection). When the surgery has received normal results an appointment can be arranged with a doctor and nurse for insertion of your coil. See new coils or replacement coil section. New Coils New coils need to be inserted during the first 7 days of your cycle. This will confirm you are not pregnant at the time of insertion, a guideline protocol followed by Highlands Surgery. On the first day of your period or the nearest working day, contact the surgery and ask to speak with Debbie Warrington or Debbie Worrall where we will endeavour to book an appointment during this first 7 days of your cycle. We have a limited availability for new coil fittings, if appointments are not available you will need to call again on the first day of your next period. It may take a few months to coordinate the availability of a Dr and Nurse within the limited time of your cycle.
