Section 4 Function of NEC ESMPRO ESMDiskArray
The NEC ESMPRO ESMDiskArray function offers the status monitoring of the RAID system which
uses the RAID controller, and the disk pre-failure prediction function.
The NEC ESMPRO ESMDiskArray performs disk pre-failure prediction and detects a fault in an early
stage.
About the relation between NEC ESMPRO ESMDiskArray and the disk array
management utility
NEC ESMPRO ESMDiskArray acquires the information on a disk array management utility.
Therefore, be sure to install disk array management utility in a system.
About management item and status strings
The management item and the status character string are different by the type of RAID
controller.
4.1 Reference of disk array information
The NEC ESMPRO ESMDiskArray manages the three types of information, "Controller Information",
"Physical Device Information" and "Logical Device Information". You can check this information on
DataViewer.
●
Controller Information
Information including a model, a driver
name, a driver version and the others of RAID
controller will be displayed.
”S.M.A.R.T.”
The item "S.M.A.R.T." indicates the state of
a S.M.A.R.T. function.
When it is "Enable", a monitoring result is
displayed on the item [S.M.A.R.T.] of a
Physical Device Information view.
●
Physical Device Information
Information including the state of the
physical device which constitutes a disk array
controller and state of S.M.A.R.T. function will
be displayed.
Using "split" function of Promise's
disk array controller
Disk Array Controller (SATA), Disk Array
Controller (SATA2), Disk Array Controller
(SATA2) and Disk Array Controller (SAS)
have "split" function.
Physical Device means one hard disk if you
don't divide hard disk. Or, Physical Device
16
NEC ESMPRO Manager, Agent ESMDiskArray User Guide
means one part which you divided of hard
disk.
Hard disk prevention maintenance
function
The NEC ESMPRO ESMDiskArray offers the
hard disk prevention maintenance function to
diagnose the life of a hard disk by the
S.M.A.R.T. function.
By this function, a hard disk with high error
generating frequency is recognized before
breaking down, and preventive disk
replacement can be carried out.
S.M.A.R.T. function
The S.M.A.R.T. function is the function that
the hard disk itself internally manages
information related to failures and makes an
alarm notification if it predicts that a failure will
occur in the near future.
Whether information is related to a failure or
not depends on vendor specifications.
●
Logical Device Information
Information including the state of the logical
device which constitutes a disk array controller,
RAID, and capacity will be displayed.
"Rebuild Status"
[Rebuild Status] is displayed only when a
logical device is rebuilding.
About origin of Logical Device ID
In the case of Disk Array Controller (SAS), the origin of "Logical Device ID" value is
different from disk array management utility "WebPAM PRO".
- DataViewer: 1 origin (1, 2, 3…)
- WebPAM PRO: 0 origin (0, 1, 2…)
In the case of the following, it means the same logical device.
DataViewer: 1
WebPAM PRO: 0
About “Rebuild Status”
Item "Rebuild Status" might be displayed as a monitor item of the physical device. It is
depending on the type of RAID Controllers.

5.4 About WEB component of NEC ESMPRO Manager
In case of using WEB component of NEC ESMPRO Manager Ver. 4.24 and earlier version, the value
of "Cache Write Mode" may be wrong value. If you set "Auto switch" to cache write mode by disk array
management utility, the WEB component displays "blank" on "Cache Write Mode".
When "Cache Write Mode" is "blank" on WEB component, confirm real value by DataViewer of NEC
ESMPRO Manager.
