How old are you?
What year you were born?
Why did you choose the profession of Dental
Hygiene?
Feel the same way?
Would you do it again?
The Greatest Generation – Tom Brokaw

Depression, WW II, Great sacrifice
Over 50% of men served in military, taught that
using a top down “military type” management
style was most efficient way to get things done.

Most entitled/least educated ever

Fastest growing segment of workers today
Technology is an extension of who they are
Grew up in which media/technology often
blurred reality and fantasy.
Were encouraged to be empowered to take
positive actions when things go wrong.

Traditionalists very patriotic, believe in selfsacrifice. Have few jobs during their careers/
feel lucky to have one at all, accept hierarchy
as norm.
Boomers challenge authority, fight against
institutions. Will continue working if still
contributing.
Gen Xers Straightforward communication
preferred. Keen at detecting honesty/trust.
Always ready for change, keep their resumes
up-to-date.
Millennials feel they can make a difference,
prefer to be collaborative, are used to being
decision-makers, expect the same at work.
What will the future be for them and for us?!

What has caused me to lose the passion for
my work?
What career path outside of clinical hygiene
interests me?
What, if any, are the barriers preventing me
from furthering my education?
Do I want to stay in dentistry, or would
something totally different be better for me?
Am I willing to expend the energy and
resources necessary to further myself
professionally?
