THE WILLINGDON MUSIC
PROGRAM
MUSIC EDUCATION INSPIRES STUDENTS TO
SUCCEED IN THEIR LIVES.
Children learn musical educational concepts from Kodaly,
Dalcroze, and Orff, they sing on pitch, they learn to play many
different instruments, and most of all, they learn by doing. Learning
is an active process and it enables them to recognize patterns
and symmetries. Early musical training has an effect on brain
development to produce long-lasting changes in motor abilities
and brain structure. Music education facilitates student academic
achievement by recalling and retaining verbal information,
improvements in math and that advantage that music provides
increases over time. It also boosts reading, and French and English
language arts skills. Music fosters a feeling of community and this
supports better study habits and self-esteem. Ultimately, music
education develops the creative capacities for lifelong success.
•Students learn to play many different instruments and sing on pitch which facilitates academic achievement
•Students have the opportunity to perform in concerts
•Students are included in the creation process and may participate in extra-curricular activities like choir.
•Field trips provides students the opportunity to perform outside the school to support important fundraising efforts for the betterment of
humanity and watch concerts from professional musicians.
•This music program fosters a feeling of community and develops the creative capacities for lifelong success.
THE WILLINGDON
SCIENCE PROGRAM
Science at Willingdon is taught using place-based, experiential and
environmental approaches as mandated by the Quebec Education Program.
The three competencies for science and technology are strengthened and put
into operation during hands-on labs and through cooperative discussion. Science Objectives: •To provide students with an exciting, experiential science education that
makes them want to learn more. •To teach students the importance of collaborative group work in order to
solve complex scientific problems and to equip the
students with the cooperative and leadership skills necessary to do so. •To allow students to develop the skills, technological proficiencies and
language to effectively solve scientific problems and to communicate using
scientific language. WHAT DOES THE PROGRAM OFFER? One and a half hours of science class per week from grades 3-6 with our Science Specialist,
Dr. Kathleen Usher, who completed her doctoral research at McGill on how to better prepare
teachers in training to teach science in more experiential and meaningful ways. Outdoor labs on trees, invertebrates, vegetable gardening, weather and geology. A fully equipped science room with digital microscopes, Lego robotics, a makerspace
for STEM projects, new computers, SmartBoard and a huge collection of geological and
natural science specimens to help bring the learning to life. Access to a fully equipped, state of the art, computer lab where students can delve deeper
into questions and topics that come up during labs and experiments. A roster of science mentors from the Willingdon community who come and share their
expertise and passion in their field of science be it a physics workshop, a neuroscience
activity or a geology tour our professional parent community keeps the science lab current
and exciting! Field trips to the Planetarium and the Morgan Arboretum as well as to High School science
fairs complement community-based field trips. A Human Body Expo and Water Cycle Expo take place in grades 5 & 6 and students share
their learning and a hands-on workshop with the Kindergartners and Grade one students
at the school.

The Tool Box Project: TOOLS THAT
FOSTER & PROMOTE EMOTIONAL
INTELLIGENCE
The Toolbox Project outlines a set of tools that help children deal
with challenging situations that can arise in their daily lives.
The program which originated in California, is up & running at
Willingdon; we are incorporating it into our curriculum in every
grade, in every class! Willingdon focuses on one tool per week,
and children are encouraged to use the tools daily to help them
throughout the day as the need arises. The programs purpose
is developing one’s emotional intelligence, to be able to handle
challenging situations in a calm, effective & stress-free manner.
Throughout the course of the year, a team of dedicated parents
offer workshops to individual classes and to parents as a means
to support teachers in effectively implementing the tools.

WILLINGDON STUDENT COUNCIL
Willingdon Student Council is comprised of interested students from cycle 3. The students
along with the advisor, Mrs. Isabelle Daniels, meet regularly to discuss and to work on a
variety of projects such as:
1. Reaching out globally. Through Plan Canada Willingdon School sponsors our foster child
Frank and his community in Ghana.
2. Reaching out locally we support our NDG Food Depot.
3. Reaching out within our school, we are currently working on setting up some projects
and activities where senior students help our juniors.
