4-H Livestock Projects
4-H is a national educational program administered in Montana through the MSU
Extension Service that serves youth ages 6-19. Based upon volunteer adult
leadership, the 600+ Gallatin County members learn through individual, club and
countywide activities. On average leaders provide over 100 project workshops each
year - that's almost 2 per week. Dedicated, knowledgeable volunteers are the
cornerstones of the program.
4-H members choose annually from 100 separate projects in which to enroll. Some
of these are Market Livestock projects. In the market livestock projects the 4-H
member learns how to evaluate and select livestock; proper care and nutrition;
marketing skills; and all aspects involved in producing a quality market animal.
Many members also are enrolled in an animal-breeding project. Principles of
humane treatment for animals are stressed, and members learn how to train and
handle their animals safely.
For most, the livestock show and judging during the County Fair provides a
comprehensive evaluation of what they have learned throughout the year. Projects in
market swine, beef, and lamb offer carcass evaluations, further educating members
in market animal production. The 4-H / FFA Market Stock Sale is the culmination of
these projects.
At every level, 4-H members are expected to make decisions and set goals, thereby
developing life skills that assist them in becoming competent, contributing adult
members of society. 4-H members are learning skills to become industry leaders.
FFA Livestock Projects
FFA livestock projects are designed to provide real -life experiences for high school
students in the livestock industry. These projects are intended to mirror commercial
livestock production for both the breeding and market animals. The experiences
gained are designed to develop job skills in animal husbandry. Record keeping in a
businesslike manner is strongly encouraged.
4-H Silent Auction
New this year: Many of our 4-H youth not only raise animals, but also create,
build, design, and cook. There will be a silent auction held in the Indoor Arena with
youth photos, crafts, and food. Please check out the table.
How to Participate
What the Buyer Receives
It's easy to participate in an auction!
1. Register as a buyer before or during the sale.
Animals will be sold by the number system, requiring all potential Buyers to register and pick up Buyers' Numbers prior to the sale. These will be available at the
Clerk's table in front of the Sale Pavilion. Please register early if possible.
If you can't be present for the sale and wish to participate, obtain a proxy buyer
agreement from any of the livestock superintendents listed below.
2. Bid for your personal use:
Friends and neighbors may share the purchase if a whole animal is more than you
can use. If you want part of an animal, and have not found another person with
whom to share it, contact a Livestock Superintendent (listed below) for help in
matching your order with another purchaser.
Obviously, not all of the live weight of a purchased animal comes home as edible
product. Actual percentages will vary, depending upon the individual animal and
cutting methods requested. The following diagrams will give you an idea of what
you'll get.

3. Bid for RESALE: Any buyer may consign his or her purchase back to the
Auction committee for resale at the established commercial price on the sale day.
The stock sale committee handles all the details and the buyer pays only the difference between his bid and the market price. Resale is not available for poultry
or rabbits. See examples below.
You can purchase an animal and donate it to the Food Bank.
4. After being named the high bidder: the auctioneer will ask if you want to
keep the animal or have it resold. Many buyers prefer having their purchases
processed and freezer-ready. A fee is charged which you pick up both for slaughtering and for cutting and wrapping.
5. PAY FOR YOUR PURCHASE(S) AT THE END OF THE SALE UNLESS:
PREVIOUS ARRANGEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE WITH THE SALE CLERK.
