How Healthy Are Your Batteries? Batteries don’t die suddenly. Battery life slowly degrades, little by little each day, eventually putting your mobile operations at risk. Until now, you have had little, if any, insight into the health of your batteries. TM Discover how new GTS Genius Batteries provide the insight you need to monitor the True State-of-Health of your entire population of batteries. What is True State-of-Health? True State-of-Health (SoH) measures the current condition of a battery compared to its ideal conditions. SoH is measured by evaluating the usage history of a battery over time. True SoH is determined by measuring and analyzing several key factors, including age, capacity, voltage, temperature exposure, storage, and impedance. Up to this point, ordinary ‘smart’ batteries have been incapable of measuring this data, thus giving you an incomplete measurement of SoH. A key to maximizing performance over the life of a battery is monitoring levels of impedance, or internal resistance. Ordinary ‘smart’ batteries do not fully account for impedance. What is impedance and why is it important? Impedance is the measure of resistance inside a battery that prohibits electrical current to flow through. In a battery, the lower the level of impedance, the greater the flow of electric current. Low Impedance Moderate Impedance High Impedance If you think of a battery in relation to your heart, the current flowing through the battery relates to blood flowing through your arteries. As the heart ages, plaque build-up can form on artery walls. The greater the build-up, the higher the level of impedance, restricting blood flow from the heart to vital organs. A similar process happens to your batteries over time, making them less effective. A battery with high levels of impedance may show a “full charge”, but in truth, the run time and performance will be limited. F E How does impedance affect the performance of a battery? Weak batteries with high levels of impedance are often compared to a gas tank with a large dent in it. Refueling this tank is quicker than fueling normal tank because there is less volume to fill. Like the green light on a charger, the fuel gauge in the vehicle will show full when the tank is topped off. Although it appears to be full, the tank will not have its full capacity, and the distance traveled before refueling will be shorter than normal. Ordinary ‘smart’ batteries only tell you part of the story. Ordinary ‘smart’ batteries cannot accurately monitor True State-of-Health. These batteries analyze only a few data points to calculate SoH. This would be similar to a doctor diagnosing overall health based only on a person’s age and sleep patterns. Ordinary ‘smart’ batteries: n Use limited data to determine State-of-Health n Are incapable of independently tracking and maintaining their own data n Require extra equipment and additional processes to calculate State-of-Health n State-of-Health readings are only taken at specific points in time n Are unable to visually notify the user when they are nearing end of life What is GTS Genius Technology?
