Introduction
Student Seminar
Assurance and Certification
of Bayesian Networks
Mark Douthwaite
17/11/2014
Background
Student Seminar
• Aircraft manufacturers increasingly use in-vehicle health
monitoring (IVHM) to directly inform mission management
systems
• IVHMs are software packages that sit on top of sensors and
report faults/service quality
• Existing methods do not perform as well as desired
• Bayesian Networks have been considered to improve quality
Bayesian Networks
Student Seminar
• The ‘Bayes Net’ approach has been selected as the avenue of
research this project is tied to
• Suggested avenues of research have been made in January –
this project grew out of those suggestions
• The primary consideration of this project is how a Bayesian
Network can be engineered to achieve an assurance standard
commensurate with current aviation standards.
Suggestions
Student Seminar
1. Can the underlying probabilistic nature of a Bayesian
Network based IVHM achieve compliance with existing
standards?
2. If it cannot comply with such existing standards: why not?
3. How can possible issues be overcome?
Progress
Student Seminar
• Developed knowledge and understanding of Software
Assurance
• Improved knowledge and understanding of underlying
Statistics
• Developed knowledge and understanding of the ‘mechanics’
of Bayesian Networks
• Begun development of my own model Bayes Net – based
IVHM
