Category A — Recycling Category Activity A: Coordinate a recycling program for at least two of the following: (one half point each) Green Living Science can coordinate a program specifically designed for your school to recycle any of the materials below. With this program we can provide an all school recycling assembly. office paper plastic metal cans newspapers and magazines cardboard Activity C: Waste-free lunch program Green Living Science will provide detailed instructions on how to design and implement a waste-free lunch program; including information about composting food, using biodegradable or reusable products, and training guidelines for staff. Activity D: Implementing a policy to buy recycled, biodegradable, locally produced or less toxic food and school supplies. Green Living Science will connect you with Michigan Green Safe which provides a wide selection of compostable products at conventional product prices. Category C — Environmental Projection Category Activity B. Offering a teaching unit on environmental issues facing this state Green Living Science educators design environmental curriculum to discuss issues facing the metro Detroit area. Teachers can select from a variety of environmental lessons for a Green Living Science educator to come and teach with their class. Activity C. Establishing or maintaining a natural Michigan garden project with native plants. Green Living Science educators can assist with the planning and installation of a rain garden. Rain gardens incorporate the concept of reuse to engage students in how they can help prevent water pollution and beautify their community. Activity E. Participate in a local community environmental issue by activities such as letter-writing, attending public hearings, raising funds or community outreach (+) With our connection and partnership with the Michigan Recycling Coalition Green Living Science can do visits or letter writing campaigns on recycling to legislatures. Hosting an environmental or energy speaker, event or field trip. Plan a field trip to Recycle Here! and the Lincoln Street Art Park. This trip allows students to better understand how citizens of Detroit recycle and how reuse can transform a community space from an illegal dumping site into a park! Activity C. Establish a student organization that participates in environmental activities Green Living Science can provide a series of twenty lessons previously implemented in an after school Environmental Science Club. With these lessons students engaged in discussions and activities focused on environmentally aware concepts such as pollution, alternative energies, and engineering concepts. Activity D. Observing earth day by participating in an earth day event in April Green Living Science will assist in the planning and implementation of an Earth Day Celebration at your school including a visit from Bee Green! Activity E. Maintaining an updated bulletin board or kiosk with information on environmental concerns and the school’s actions in addressing those concerns. Green Living Science has many resources to help teachers inform the student body about environmental concepts! By using these info graphics, illustrations, and facts, teachers can easily educate their school about various environmental concepts. Activity Other. Coordinate an exchange or drive to collected used or unwanted items within the school or community for repurpose Assist and implement incentives for collection drives for items such as batteries, phone books, printer cartridges or light bulbs!
