Science Week 2017 - Health
During Science week, the pupils in Year 1
explored what makes a healthy packed lunch.
They looked at different food groups and
how to important it is to have a good diet.
The pupils in Year 1 received a letter from
Goldilocks who had been invited to the Bear's
house for a picnic lunch. They helped
Goldilocks to explore different sandwich
fillings and designed a sandwich for the
bears. The pupils really enjoyed making and
eating the sandwiches in class and helping
Goldilocks understand what is healthy and
unhealthy.
In Science week, Year 2 were looking at 'Keeping
healthy and healthy foods'. The children
researched the different food groups and
identified what they needed a lot of, some of and
a little of. They tasted a variety of food and
discussed the taste (sour, sweet and bitter) and
texture. The children then designed their own
healthy meal and thought about what they eat at
home and at school. Finally, the children made
bread and discussed what the benefits of eating
bread can be. We discussed what healthy fillings
could be added when they took their bread home.
During Science week, Year 3 learnt all about the tongue! We had fun learning about and tasting
the 5 basic tastes (sweet, sour, bitter, salty, umami). We found out that each flavour tasted
stronger in different areas of the tongue! Also, we carried out a number of experiments: one
about saliva production and how it links to personality, and one about how chewing can affect
your concentration. The children thoroughly enjoyed playing different memory games to test out
this theory! In addition, we learnt about how the tongue helps us to articulate words and
sounds and how to warm up our tongue muscles so we can articulate more clearly. The children
even came up with their own tongue twister exercises! It was a fantastic week, the children
learnt lots of new science vocabulary and knowledge through a range of practical activities!
Starbank School Nature Area
This
Science week, Year 4 were diseases detectives and learnt
about the incredible world of infectious diseases. At the
start of the week, we learnt about some of the most common
diseases around the world and then used our medical training
to be able to diagnose some patients with mystery diseases.
After that, we learnt how diseases are spread by doing experiments with glitter and coloured chemicals to see how just
one person in the population could pass their disease to everyone in the class in just 1 minute. Our final project was to
design a hand washing station for schools in Africa. We designed and made a whole range different inventions using recycled materials and tested out how good our contraptions
were at collecting rain water to help stop the spread of diseases. Whilst we had a lot of fun, we also learnt about how
serious the issue was and linked it to our work about the
UN's Global goals.
At our new Hob Moor Road Site, we
have been fortunate in having a
fantastic open space, which we are now
turning into our own special nature area!
On Tuesday 4th April 2017, a selection
of children from Year 3 -6 were
involved in the first part of developing
our nature area, with the support of the
Eco-Park. We were lucky enough to
receive 60 trees, which we planted
successfully to start our nature area!
We are looking forward to watching
them grow and completing more
gardening work soon.
As part of our science week, we continued to explore our Earth and Space topic, as we had
thoroughly enjoyed this unit. We explored Mars and became Space Scientists! In our enquiry focus,
'Is anybody out there?', we explored different Martian soils, practising our investigation skills and
designed space suits for our visit to Mars. We even planned our crash landing back to Earth! We had
so much fun investigating, designing and creating in our Science Week! Take a look at some of the
pictures below...
