The Game of Basketball
History
• Invented by Dr. James
Naismith in 1891
– Springfield, MA
• Used peach baskets
instead of metal hoops
Basic Rules
• 5 players on the court for each team
• 2 points are scored by shooting ball through
the hoop
– Unless it is shot from behind the 3 point line
• Must bounce the ball on the ground in order
to move
• Fouls are called for too much contact
• Ball must stay inside boundary lines
