KD Connect Keilor Downs College`s Netbook Program 2016

K D Connect
Keilor Downs College’s Netbook Program 2016
Dear Parent/Guardian
Our College aims to prepare all students for life-long learning in today’s technology-reliant
society. This learning will occur in a context that promotes positive and safe experiences in
the use of ICT. We were able to launch “K D Connect”, Keilor Downs College’s Netbook
Program at the beginning of 2012. Initially, the program was introduced to students in the
senior years with Federal Government funding. In subsequent years, the College was able to
extend its netbook program to all year levels through a co-contribution arrangement for Year
7 and 8 students.
No further funding for netbook programs has been made available since the initial grant. Like
the majority of schools, KDC is committed to the use of learning technologies in the class
room. As such, we have had to develop our KD Connect program for 2016 with the aim that
all students will have a device to access our modern curriculum. To achieve this aim, there
will be a range of options available to parents/students depending on year level. Those
options are:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Managed Device Program (MDP) – device owned by parent
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) – device owned by parent
Refurbished KDC Netbook – device owned by KDC and leased by parent
KDC Co-contribution netbook - device owned by KDC and leased by parent – this
option is only for 2016 Year 9 students who will be in the final year of their cocontribution agreement
The options above are explained below.
OPTION 1 – MANAGED DEVICE PROGRAM
What is a managed device program?
A managed device program helps to provide a standardised approach to implementation of
technology within the school and is KDC’s preferred option. Apart from parents arranging
purchase and payment arrangements with the designated supplier, all aspects of the
program which will be organised and maintained by the school.
Working with a number of educational device providers Keilor Downs College has selected
the Lenovo Yoga 11E. This device offers a balance of performance, reliability and service at
a competitive price point. KDC has selected Edunet Computer Services as our supplier.
Information concerning this device is contained in the attached documentation from
Edunet.
You buy the Lenovo Yoga 11E directly from Edunet through an online portal specifically
designed for KDC. You can buy it outright or can get a 12 month interest free arrangement
through Zip Money. Parents can also, of course, make their own private finance
arrangement and then buy the device from Edunet. They are also going to help set up an
arrangement from NILS (No Interest Loan Scheme) which is a partnership between NAB &
Brotherhood of St Lawrence. Payment for the device and warranty is compulsory but the
case and insurance are optional but highly recommended to ensure coverage for accidental
damage and theft.
Please note: Parents need to be aware of the difference between IdeasPad and ThinkPad
in terms of Lenovo. IdeasPad products are the cheaper, commercial version that only have a
limited expected life of 12 months. ThinkPad products are the more expensive industry
versions that only business or schools can buy. They have an expected life of about 3
years. Parents may mistakenly think that they have found a cheaper Lenovo Yoga but it will
not be a Thinkpad version that KDC has chosen.
Once the Yoga is purchased, all servicing, insurance claims and technical support such as
loading an image, updating security, updating software etc. will be done through KDC.
The devices will have the full Edustar suite of software as well as any software owned by
KDC.
OPTION 2 - BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE (BYOD)
This is where students bring their own computer from home. It is owned by the family and is
not managed in any way by the school. Our technicians are designing a modified ‘image’
for these devices and making it available on a site where students can download this for
themselves. Students will have access to all software provided by DET eg. Microsoft Office
through an online ‘software centre’ but they must download it themselves. Anti-virus/security
software is provided but must be managed by the student. Network connection will be
provided so they can access all Internet services including Edmodo and Compass.
Specifications for BYOD:
It needs to be a Windows device and must be at least Windows 7.0 but prefer Windows 8.0
and above. The device must be less than 3 years old to have the capacity to access
software and have more than 4GB RAM to cope with required software. Screens must be
bigger than 11.6”
Main differences with Managed Device Program (Option 1)
Students will have no school access to technicians for repairs, breakages, software issues,
updates, downloads. Parents will have to organize any repairs or insurance issues
themselves. There is likely to be a small fee ($20) to connect to allow access to some of the
school’s licensed software.
OPTION 3 REFURBISHED KDC NETBOOKS (Years 11 and 12 only)
We are going to refurbish the best of our existing netbooks and upgrade them by putting in a
new battery and a super-drive to significantly speed them up. They will not be covered by
insurance or warranty so will be ‘swapped out’ if significant issues occur rather than being
repaired. Because of availability of devices, this option will be initially limited to Year 12 and
11 students given the period of time they have left at KDC. For cases of hardship in other
year levels, devices may be provided subject to availability.
For this option, a lease of $100 will be charged to cover the upgrade. These devices will be
treated in much the same way as Option 1 devices. They will still be counted as part of the
managed program and all repairs and technical support will be done by the school. These
will be adequate to access the curriculum during this transition period but are not a long term
solution. Please bear in mind that these netbooks, whilst functional, will still be old netbooks
with the problems that inevitably arise.
OPTION 4 KDC CO-CONTRIBUTION PROGRAM (Year 9 only)
This is only for 2016 Year 9 students who will be in the third and final year of their cocontribution scheme. Upon payment of the third annual fee of $175, the student retains their
netbook for 2016. The netbooks still have one year of warranty and insurance and nothing
further needs to be done by parents for 2016.
Acceptable Use Agreement
All students/parents except 2016 Year 9 students in Option 4 will need to accept the terms
and conditions of the KDC Acceptable Use Agreement. A copy of this appears in this
handout.

Expectations of Keilor Downs College Students
At KDC, we promote school-wide positive behaviours and have developed a set of
expectations of KDC students in a variety of settings and situations. These expectations are
based on three rules:



Fair Learning – working to your full potential and allowing others to work to theirs
Fair Treatment – understanding the rights of all
Safe and Secure – use of sensible behaviour inside and outside the classroom
We do not consider positive behaviour with digital technologies (cyber-behaviour) as an
additional expectation but as a natural part of our existing framework for school-wide positive
behaviour. The following table details how positive cyber-behaviour can be shown.
