GlobalCharge Remote Power Systems
Global Charge
Gentherm Global Power Technologies (GPT)* is the world leader in remote
power systems. As a vertically integrated manufacturer, GPT has been
providing reliable solutions for companies with critical applications in remote
locations since 1975. Our team has successfully delivered over 22,000
remote power systems into 55 countries.
Cycle Chargers are the most fuel-efficient remote power system available today.
They offer the highest efficiency of any prime remote power system and represent
some of the toughest equipment on the market. Cycle Chargers are designed
for long-term unattended operation, but can also be effective in support of grid
supply. GPT’s GlobalCharge is a fully self-contained remote power system offering
continuous prime power from 300 Watts to 6000 Watts.

Key Benefits
1. Fuel Efficient
2. One Year Maintenance
Intervals
3. Load Following Capabilities
4. High Efficiency
5. High Reliability
• Diesel, LPG or natural gas-fired systems
• Capability
to use several generating sources such as
gensets, solar or wind simultaneously
• Load following for short-term and long-term load
changes
• Flexibility to customize a design for specific site
requirements
• Ease of maintenance – no specialized skills required
Power Fact:
One year
maintenance and
refueling cycles for
most applications.
GlobalCharge is a self-contained remote power system that is ideal for applications
where fuel consumption is a priority, or where only liquid fuel is available.
The technology associated with the charging system is proven as it has been used
in specialized applications for over 15 years in the military, coast guard and border
control. Global Thermoelectric has adapted this technology for use in
industrial applications.
The result is a quiet, discreet product that operates reliably in areas where site
access is difficult and site visits less frequent.
Overcoming extreme conditions:
GlobalCharge provides power to critical applications in situations where the
location poses a challenge. In areas where extreme climate is a factor, an automatic
climate control feature maintains temperatures between 5 - 25°C using active
ventilation, air conditioning, waste heat and auxiliary heaters to keep the enclosure
balanced and the system running smoothly.

Common Applications
GlobalCharge is most popular with:
• Telecom service providers for remote repeaters
• Liquids pipeline controls and communications
• Security and surveillance sensors, cameras and communications
• Remote northern applications of all types
Every System is Unique
Although GlobalCharge has standard configurations, it can be customized to suit a
customer’s requirements including hybrid systems, unique layouts, fuel storage
and customer equipment areas. For more information on customized options speak

Case Study: ATCO Electric
ATCO Electric builds, operates and maintains a vast system of transmission and
distribution lines to deliver power to homes, communities and businesses. The
consistent and efficient operation of its system is critical to the company’s success.
ATCO’s transmission control towers are often located in areas without access to AC
power. The addition of two new towers to the system gave the company the opportunity
to review its choices for remote prime power.
The Challenge:
The challenge was to find a continuous power system for 1150 Watt and 2150 Watt
requirements that would be reliable, cost-effective and environmentally sensitive. The
solution would also need to comply with federal regulations and be easily maintained
by ATCO staff.
GPT’s Solution:
GPT recommended an integrated cycle charging system, a customized version of their
GlobalCharge product, at each tower. This solution was considered the most efficient
option due to a low duty cycle on the prime generators. It was less expensive and
required lower maintenance than gensets. In this case, refueling and maintenance
would be required only once a year. Finally, GPT’s solution was propane-fuelled
eliminating the need for on-site diesel storage and the risk of soil contamination. This
met with ATCO’s environmental objectives.
Results:
The GlobalCharge systems were operating prior to tower erection. Service became the
strength in this case. ATCO was grateful to Global for their responsiveness in helping
them train staff and comply with regulatory hurdles.

As the foundation of the system, the controller “cycles” a pair of gensets in
a unique manner to regularly recharge a station battery. The station battery
serves the load until it reaches a programmed depth of discharge level, at
which time a genset is engaged to recharge the battery and carry the load.
When the battery is fully charged, the first genset shuts down. On the next
cycle, the other genset is engaged.
Power Fact:
Global Charge has
a 20 year system
design life.
The control system manages the charging cycles to maximize genset and
station battery life. Special “extended run” gensets are used to facilitate
longer maintenance cycles.

What if we need a hybrid version?
GlobalCharge can easily and seamlessly incorporate alternative or auxiliary
generating sources such as wind or solar to create a GlobalCharge Hybrid
system without sacrificing reliability. This can provide benefits to
customers by reducing fuel consumption and extending maintenance
even further.
