We’ve had fun settling in to Lahaina and the rectory. We look forward to another great year ahead. I have enjoyed serving as your Vicar for 2015. It has been a blessing to connect with the core members of Holy Innocents whom have kept this place going. And I have enjoyed welcoming the new folks who have started attending since January of 2015. I look forward to welcoming more folks into the year 2016. Remember to invite a friend to Holy I because you never know how it might impact their life journey. Mahalo to Jane Cambouris for being my Bishop’s Warden this year of transition. Jane’s availability and willingness to help in any way has been appreciated. Mahalo to Leanna Roberts for her service as Jr. Warden this year of transition. Her availability when emergencies would happen is greatly appreciated. Her work on beginning the Rectory upgrades has been a blessing. Mahalo to the Bishop’s Committee, Deanna Pennington (Was Treasurer till end of Sept 2015), Alexa Hanohano (Secretary), Pam Silva, and Donna Tarsitano for hanging in there during this transitional year. Mahalo to Clint Henderson for jumping in as the Interim Treasurer beginning October 1, 2015. And Mahalo to Pauline Jennings for your hard work in assisting my transition as your new Vicar. Everyone’s hard work and dedication is appreciated. One year ago today we celebrated my beginning of being your Vicar at the Celebration of New Ministry Service. And here we are with our first annual meeting upon the completion of my first year with Holy Innocents. I share this presentation to remind you of the journey. (ENJOY) 2015 began with mixed emotions as I began as your Vicar with this new opportunity but also holding on to the grief of our dear friend Norma Nelson who journeyed onto a place greater at the end of 2014. Diving into the planning and coordinating of Norma’s service my first day as your priest reminded me of how we never know where our journey will take us. Supporting Bob Nelson and his family was an honor. On the tails of Norma’s’ service the Bishop came over for the Celebration of New Ministry Service. A seed was planted to resurrect a Sunday School Program for our children. The adventure continued with preparations for the Annual Vow Renewal and Lent around the corner. In preparation of Palm Sunday we also enjoyed a work day of sprucing up the property and repainting the labyrinth. We enjoyed working alongside the preschool staff and parents as we enhanced our property. Holy Week and Easter were full of joy and celebration with Bob Nelson and Carol Monaghan assisting with music for the Holy Week Services. On the heels of Easter we hosted the Maui Region Annual Confirmation with 4 new members from Holy Innocents: Leo Comerton, Clint and Brandie Henderson, and Martha Dicey. Spring time was a beginning of new ministries. A Centering Prayer workshop in May was a hit and so we began a weekly group on Thursdays at 4pm. Three Social n Services were arranged to share our stories while making PBJ sandwiches for A Cup of Cold Water ministry. We celebrated the 4th of July on the Lawn welcoming many friends of Holy Innocents. In the midst of summer, contracts were created for the Parish Administrator, Pauline Jennings, and we created a Bookkeeper position. Mahalo to Nicole Picarda for jumping in as our first bookkeeper and then Yvonne Prucha our current bookkeeper for transitioning us into the new year 2016. During summer we upgraded our computers and software. It was a sticky road but we survived. Change is never easy! The Annual Animal Blessing kicked off fall with the only dry weather on Maui that day. For Halloween we enjoyed our first Halloween parking lot fundraiser. All Saints was celebrated with our first Labyrinth Service. In November, we enjoyed another work day on our property along with the Preschool staff and parents sprucing up the grounds including the repainting our church and priest office. It was worth all the hard work and sweat. Thank you to all the many volunteers who came out for the day and weekend. Stewardship Sunday was full of energy with over a 100 attendees at both services combined. The 9 am service was led by the Boys and Girls Club drumming group, Mana O Laulima. A generous hospitality on the front lawn was grand. We are entering 2016 with having 42 pledges at $84,925. Thanksgiving was a beautiful day of thanks at our Holy Eucharist. Advent was on the heels of Thanksgiving this year. Mahalo to each of you and how you contributed to an amazing Advent and Christmas! The pageant was moving, the decorating was beautiful, the music thanks to Jennifer Loftus was invigorating, and Christmas Eve was beyond energy I have felt. Busting over 400 people at our two Christmas Eve services was good reason for taking the week off before Christmas and New Year’s. Our Bishop’s Committee is on board for next year with a new Bishop’s Warden and Jr. Warden. Where are we going 2016? Only God knows and so let’s start paddling as one canoe and enjoy the next voyage. Exhibit B EXHIBIT C 2015 Annual Junior Warden's Report Holy Innocents Episcopal Church Rectory – Upgrade and repair projects have been identified and prioritized for the rectory. There is a significant amount of work that needs to be done both inside and outside. In 2015, the washer, refrigerator, and some of the ceiling fans were replaced. The two downstairs bathrooms were updated with new vanities and faucets and other minor items. There a number of major projects that are a priority: re-do the entire upstairs flooring, remodel the upstairs bathroom, review and bring to code the electrical/wiring throughout the house, replacement of many of the windows/sliding door along with replacing the wood that has rotted and painting of the house (an ongoing project). Cabingas Construction has presented a formal bid to remodel the upstairs bathroom however these larger projects have been carried over to 2016. In 2015, we dealt with the ongoing issues maintenance/upkeep along with plumbing/pipe problems in the rectory and the grounds. Work Days – In conjunction with the preschool, we held two very successful work days. The first was held on March 28th and an overall property clean up occurred. With the help of members of the Tongan congregation, the sink holes in the back yard were filled in. The labyrinth and garden was refurbished and new prayer flags put up as well. The second was held on November 7th and included clean-up of the church and preschool grounds plus preschool interior. The preschool playground area got a facelift. Plus, the church office building interior was cleaned up and painted. Landscaping – Fred LaCount continues to do an outstanding job maintaining our grounds which includes the cemetery. He also spends quite a bit of time on repairing the sprinkler system. Mahalo A huge Mahalo to Rocky Barnett, Ralph Yanagawa and James who have gone the extra mile to keep the physical components of the property running smoothly and looking good. Exhibit D Treasurer report HAPPENINGS OF 2015: A YEAR OF TRANSITION Deanna Pennington continued her position as Treasurer through September 30, 2015. During the year she assisted with the transition of Rev. Amy Crowe working closely with the Bishop’s Warden. Deanna created the 2015 budget, set up payroll for Rev. Amy, completed the 1099’s, assisted with the Annual Parochial Report for the Diocese, assisted with the Audit by the /diocese since we are Mission status, and continued to oversee financials. Previously, Pauline Jennings, Parish Admin, imputed the financial data into the Computer weekly from the deposits, and Deanna continued with the reconciling, reclassifying, and printing reports creating the Treasurer’s report for Bishop Committee meetings while making sure all was running smoothly. Rev. Amy recommended we hire a bookkeeper to consolidate the work load and assist with strengthening our financials. Deanna worked with Rev. Amy Crowe and Jane Cambouris in interviewing Bookkeepers. Nicole Picarda was hired June 1, 2015 to take over bookkeeping duties. Deanna and Pauline oriented Nicole in the financial system. During this time there was a suggestion to upgrade our office computer system and software since it was about 7 years old. And so the upgrades began with a new computer being installed by James Crowe. Everything went smoothly until the QB Pro 2015 was installed. The Data from 2008 was not able to transfer without being corrupt and there were other challenges. And so the journey began to rebuild the financials thanks to a consult with Jason Bach, QB Consultant Specialist, who saved us. Meanwhile the Church Books that saved the Stewardship/donation information also froze and was not accessible on the old MAC. Reports were delayed due to the challenges of the transfer of data. Nicole had a family emergency and needed to leave the island early October. Deanna Pennington put in her need to resign from the position end of September. Clint Henderson stepped up to the treasurer positon as of October 1, 2015. With Nicole leaving shortly after Clint came on board processes were paused while a new bookkeeper was being sought. A huge Mahalo goes out to Jackie Kelly, Jane Cambouris, and Clint Henderson for counting and making the deposits during these transitions. A new bookkeeper was found and interviewed by Rev Amy Crowe and Jane Cambouris. Yvonne Prucha began October 27, 2015 picking us up and moving us forward. We are ending our year with the End of the YEAR financials in place, the stewardship data was imputed into QB by the bookkeeper, the GET taxes are complete, a new Chart of Accounts’ has been installed into the QB for 2016, and the End of the Year Statements are in process of being sent out. Clint and Rev. Amy have worked closely with Yvonne in orienting her and helping her make the transition and learn about the Holy Innocents Financials. Deanna Pennington has also been available via telephone for Yvonne on specific matters. Gratitude is extended to our Diocese for their assistance during this transitional year moving Holy Innocents into 2016. Thank you for your patience as our year has come to a close. We pray for a smoother year in 2016! Exhibit E Stewardship Holy Innocents Episcopal Church Annual Meeting January 24, 2016 Stewardship Ministry Report First, I want to thank you to Penny Wakida and Karla Gillette for their many years of working in the Stewardship Ministry. It isn't easy to follow in their footsteps. Both of these ladies have dynamic personalities and they are experts at getting things done. I am sure people have high expectations of me and wonder if I can fill those shoes. I wondered too, but then I saw the results of Rev. Amy's pledge drive and I was encouraged. By the end of December 2015, 37 pledges totaling $77,895 had been returned, compared to 32 pledges totaling $62,995 received by the end of 2014. An increase of 5 pledges and almost $15,000 in one year is a blessing and I want to say thank you for your commitment to Holy Innocents. I think one of the definitions of stewardship is making a commitment and being thankful. Another is to take care of something that belongs to someone else. It's a given that we have to take care of the buildings and grounds, but first and foremost we have to care for each other in the parish, in the community and in the world. I have some ideas for showing how much Holy Innocents can share with people outside of the pews, and I welcome your thoughts and ideas, too. Again, many mahalos for your pledges. If anyone hasn't yet returned their certificate yet, please do. It isn't too late to send in your pledge or donation for 2016. Donna Tarsitano Stewardship chair Exhibit F Preschool Under the direction of Cindy Shabao and teachers Char Yamada, Megan Ramos, Katie Bumanglag our Holy Innocent's Pre-school graduated 22 children in June. This year we had the children who did not qualify for kindergarten with birthdays by July 31st who had to spend an extra year in pre-school because the state stopped Pre-K. The Hawaiian Grant was awarded for $6,600 to continue Hawaiian studies. After over a year of documentation and reports and a lot hard work the pre-school got their NAEYC accreditation which lasts until 2021. In October we had the fund raiser with the help of Dani Haney and Leilani's and raised $7000 towards the school which was used for supplies and books .The playground was refurbished with new mulch and sand and power washed and painted where needed. We are waiting for new sails to cover the play structure which we should have by February. The Rotary club (Sunrise) donated $500 towards the sails with the help of Brandi Henderson and Rev Amy. The pre-school board meets monthly and supports the school and children and parents. There are 35 happy children enjoying the school. Exhibit G Cemetery Continue with vagrants stopping by on occasion, better since the gate is closed with Hale Aloha. Security does patrol. New Plaques ordered as necessary. Fred our landscaper works weekly to cut the grass, pick up trash, check sprinklers. $5000 transferred from the account in Honolulu a money market fund to help pay for needed maintenance and new plaques. Jane Cambouris Exhibit F Christian Education Sunday School Report How we started: People began asking Rev Amy Crowe about having a Sunday School Program. The offering at the Renewal of Ministry Service was designated for a Children Ministry to begin. $2,522.00 was collected. The money has not been spent due to no immediate needs. Items are being looked at for next year. Currently, supplies have been donated. February 8, 2015 was the first day of Sunday School with four kids ranging from 1 ½yr. - 7yr. Martha Dicey and I have taught the kids in a one room Sunday School format. Sunday School has been held at 9:00 am, running 9 – 9:30am with the kids then joining the congregation during the announcements. The kids then sit with their families to take part in the Eucharist as parents see appropriate. During sitting in church, the kids have learned the Doxology in Hawaiian, the Lord’s prayer, how to sit in church, and how to pray. Unfortunately, Martha Dicey after joining the church in April moved to the mainland with her family in July. We lost a teacher and 2 kids in our program. I have remained each Sunday teaching the Sunday School. I have taken the required Safeguarding God’s Children and Sexual Misconduct Training required by the Diocese. During the year we have had about 30 children in and out of Sunday School. Many were visitors from various parts of the world. During Sunday School the students take part in snack, singing, dancing, artwork, and of course play dough. The children made hearts to pass out on Valentine’s day, torches for Pentecost, and crosses of all kinds during Lent. In addition, they have made a big church with pictures of the people who are in our church family. They have studied the Creations Story for 7 weeks creating a poster for their class time. During the 4 weeks of Advent they learned what each Advent candle means and their names: Hope, Love, Joy, Peace, and Christ. During snack they have learned the Grace, God is Good. The traditional Easter Egg hunt on the back lawn was a big success for all ages. In the Future we need to continue to invite children and their parents to church. As we grow we will be able to use the preschool space. Presently, the Meeting Room is appropriate for the size and ages of our kids. We need teachers. We need folks to give of their time and to partner in teaching the students. Our Sunday School kids love Sunday School and don’t want to leave when it is over. Through the story of the week, talking, playing and eating snack we learn together about the love of Jesus.
