Re:
“A” Level Tryouts and Parent / Player Commitment Policy
The Hornets Lacrosse Club is taking on many initiatives to improve the programs it offers to its club
members. One such initiative is to ensure the competitiveness of its “A” level teams by outlining the
commitment required of participants in those programs. In the past we have been criticized by our
members for not offering a competitive enough program for our “A” level players. One of the reasons
cited has been a “poor level of commitment from some players” who, for various reasons (mostly
participation in other sports), don‟t fully commit to the team and miss numerous games and practices.
The Hornets Executive has examined this issue and determined that at the A level in Novice, PeeWee,
Bantam and Midget, an “enhanced level of commitment” from parents and players is required. Lacrosse,
being a team sport, requires the commitment of all team members, especially at the competitive level.
While the executive does not want to restrict participation of its players in other sports, for those players
that cannot meet the guidelines set out for “A” level teams, and are evaluated at either an “A” or “B” level,
they will be placed at the “B” level.
All parents of players in “A” programs must sign a letter agreeing to the Hornets Policy of “Parent/Player
Commitment to Teams by Division” (see attached). For “A” level players, this policy states:
“The following provides guidelines on the commitment required for each level of play.
1. Level “A” Competitive (Enhanced Commitment)
“A” level teams require the most commitment of all our programs
- Commitment to attend all games (at least 95%)
- Commitment to attend all regular scheduled practices (at least 95%)
- Expect additional team practices and games (75% commitment for attendance)
- Commitment to more than one tournament chosen by team
- Commitment to participate in Provincial Play-Offs”
We ask that you complete the following and submit it to the appropriate contact before the first evaluation.
PLAYERS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO TRYOUT FOR AN “A” TEAM UNLESS THIS LETTER IS
SIGNED IN ADVANCE OF THE FIRST TRYOUT.
Thank you,
Hornets Executive

POLICY: PARENT/PLAYER COMMITMENT TO TEAMS BY DIVISION
Purpose: To ensure that a full range of playing opportunities is provided for players registering and
playing within the Hornets Lacrosse Club, and to clarify the commitment required of parents and players
for each level of play.
Definitions for each level of play are adopted from the “levels of development” of the National Coaches
Certification Program and the Canadian Lacrosse Association (CLA):
"Competitive A” - a „learn to win‟ program requiring enhanced commitments on the part of parents and
players.
"Recreational B" - a 'learn to compete' program requiring moderate to enhanced commitment on the part
of parents and players.
"Recreational C” - a 'learn to play' and 'learn to compete' program (varies by age group) requiring
moderate commitment on the part of parents and players
"Houseleague" - a 'learn to play' program requiring minimal commitment on the part of parents and
players.
Currently, the levels of play offered by the Hornets Lacrosse Club by age group are:
- Mini Tyke – House League
- Tyke – House League
- Novice - Level “A” - 'competitive' and Level “C” - 'recreational' (although it is called Level “B” it is
operated as a Level “C” 'learn to play' program)
- PeeWee - Level “A” - 'competitive' and Levels “B” and “C” - 'recreational'
- Bantam - Level “A” - 'competitive' and Levels “B” and “C” - 'recreational'
- Midget - Level “A” - 'competitive' and Levels “B” and “C” - 'recreational'
The following provides guidelines on the commitment required for each level of play.
- Commitment to participate in Provincial Play-Offs
**Note – players participating in Nationals are bound to the guidelines set by that program
2. Level “B” – Recreational (Moderate to Enhanced Commitment)
“B” level teams require a moderate amount of commitment from parents and players
- Commitment to 75% of all games
- Commitment to 75% of all regular scheduled practices
- Commitment to 50% of any additionally scheduled practices
- Commitment to at least one tournament chosen by the team
3. Level “C” – Recreational (Moderate Commitment)
“C” level teams require a minimal to moderate amount of commitment from parents and players
- Commitment to 50% of all games
- Commitment to 50% of all regular scheduled practices
- Commitment to 50% of any additionally scheduled practices
4. House League (Minimal Commitment)
Minimal commitment is required (50% of all games and practices)
- schedules will be circulated for practices and games and parents and players will be asked to
make every effort to attend, but full commitment to the schedule is not required
Because of the enhanced commitments that come with the Competitive “A” programs, parents of players
participating in those programs will be asked to sign a letter agreeing to the commitments of that program.
