JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title Athletics Assistant Coach Endurance Postholder tbc Department University of Birmingham Sport Responsible for which other posts? Nil Responsible To Athletics Head Coach & Lead Endurance Coach Rate of Pay (to be claimed on a termly basis on completion of a FIN form) £1020 per annum Hours (based on 30 week academic year) 2 x 1 hour sessions per week – as agreed with Head Coach Job Purpose To assist in the planning, coordination and delivery of an athletics endurance programme (including cross country and track) which will focus on the development of a high performance culture for the University Club optimizing performance in BUCS competition. Main Duties Duties 1.0 Coaching 1.1 Work with the Lead Endurance Coach to deliver safe, effective and relevant coaching sessions to enable the advancement of skill and performance of individual squad members and the squad as a whole. 1.2 To act professionally, displaying good coaching conduct at all times promoting an enjoyable and inclusive atmosphere. 1.3 To ensure good practice is applied throughout all sessions. 1.4 To provide motivation and encouragement to all team members and show commitment to the development of squad and club. 1.5 To be aware of BUCS rules and regulations and keep updated on any changes to rulings. 1.6 To act as a positive and professional role model to the players at all times. 1.7 To abide by the University of Birmingham’s Equity and Racial Discrimination policies. Communication To regularly liaise with the Head Coach and/or Lead Endurance Coach to discuss any Athletics issues that may arise, and work towards the further development of Athletics at the University of Birmingham. 2.0 2.1 2.2 Where feasible, attend termly Sports Development Coach meetings with the Sports Development Manager and the University Sport Birmingham team. Attendance at these meetings is currently unpaid. 2.3 To liaise with the Head Coach and/or Lead Endurance Coach over the development of sessions, athletes and coaching programmes as well as the Club. 2.4 To work with the Head Coach and/or Lead Endurance Coach to identify, recruit, support and develop young athlete with excellent academics qualifications and high performance potential. 3.0 3.1 Professional Development To attend and contribute to a Coach Development Review at the end of each season. Where reviews are undertaken by other bodies, the Head Coach may be able to use this review as a basis for further discussion instead of undertaking a separate review. 3.2 To keep up to date with coaching techniques and theories and attend any coach development course deemed necessary by the Head Coach and Club Captain. 3.3 Where appropriate, attend a ‘Guide to Sports Coach Mentoring’ workshop. 3.4 To inform the Head Coach of training and courses attended relevant to this coaching position. The CV must show evidence of; Essential Qualifications Minimum UKA Level 2 Award or equivalent Demonstrable Continued Professional Development Current First Aid Qualification Public Liability Insurance Essential Knowledge A good knowledge of the athletics in the UK and awareness of current Athletics teaching and coaching initiatives at elite levels. Essential Skills & Experience Working with national level athletes Excellent communication, inter-personal and organisational skills. A commitment to the development of athletics at all levels and an understanding of the sports development processes required in achieving that. An empathy with working within a student environment.
