Bhutan Map Portal
Introduction
The Bhutan Map Portal was designed by National Statistics Bureau looking towards to fulfill a
visual information dissemination platform which has become very crucial for Planners and for
International reference for development activities. The end product is designed using GIS
Technology and is a central statistical database storing Socio-economic and demographic
indicators using maps to make it more user friendly.
The Portal contains as of now of data’s pertaining mainly on poverty output on Small Area
Estimation and Infrastructure mapping as a beginning. We would be in-corpora ting other
available data in future and will be updated continuously on emerging demands as and when new
data are available.
The portal is a simple interface between the user and the database.
At present the mapping database includes information on Road, Education, Historical Monument
and Hospital in Bhutan. It can be browsed Nationwide or Dzongkhag wise as per one’s
requirement.
Home Page
Let us start with description of home page which can be accessed through our website
www.nsb.gov.bt . The image given below is pictorial description of Home page of system.

The full functionality and Information to public domain starts with Menu bar as shown above,
which actually consist of Home, Administrative Maps and Thematic Maps.These three options
give necessary and required information to public and all the functionality of this system sum up
in these options.
Just below Menu option it consist of three columns, the brief introduction to Map Portal is in first
column. Second and third column titled by Administrative Overview and Thematic Maps
functions more or less same. These two options contain same information as described in menu
option but difference is, it gives very brief summary of Map Portal.
Menu Bar
Upon clicking on the Home, it will redirect to home page itself.

With regard to Administrative Map, it contains graphically recorded information pertaining to
administrative matters. Such that it will give different information based on each 20 Dzongkhag and 205
Gewog. SoUpon clicking Administrative Map, it will give two options namely Dzongkhag Level Map and
Gewog Level Map.As name suggest Dzongkhag Level Map will let us know about administrative
boundaries of each district with different information from each district. Gewog Level Map goes to
specific boundaries of each gewog and contains different information from each gewog.

A thematic map focuses on a specific theme or subject area, it uses the base data to display information.
Under Thematic Maps it has got detail information on Dzongkhag wise and Gewog wise.

Upon clicking Dzongkhag under Thematic Maps it has several categories like Demography, Education,
Labour & Employment, Health, Wealth & Income and Administrative. It help us to find information on
particular field or categories.

Now going by each category under Dzongkhag, it is further categorized into many subcategories with
detailed and specific information from field.
Like Demography category is further divided into Population, Population Projection 2010, Rural
Population, Natural Population Growth Rate, Population Density, Proportion of population under age 5
and Proportion of Population older than age 45. It is shown below.

Likewise Education is divided into Gross Enrollment Ratio, Net Enrollment Ratio and Literacy Ratio

Now Gewog also comprises of many categories like Poverty rate, Gini Coef, Literacy rate, Households by
visit to health facility, Population by average member per regular household and market Accessibility
Indicator mean of Gewog.

Going back to Administrative Map and upon clicking Dzongkhag Level Map it will showdemarcation of
each Dzongkhag with their name written on it.

The map shown above will give pictorial information of river system, Education centers and health
centers in Bhutan under each Dzongkhag or district.
For example clicking check box for roads will give road connection of Bhutan as shown below.

Upon clicking Geowg Level Map it will show demarcation of each 205 gewogs with their names on it. The
borders of Dzogkhag is separated by black lines and gewog by orange line.

As same as Dzongkhag Level Map, the function of check box to show river system, education center and
health centers shown in above picture are same.
Refering to figure 2.2 which shows overall map structure of Bhutan under Dzongkhag level map. As
explained it also shows demarcation of dzongkhag boundries. So, upon selecting any of dzongkhags will
show the detailed information of particular selected dzongkhag. For example selecting Trongsa
Dzongkhag will give this map.

This map shows population coverege of Trongsa in their particular gewog, provided population is
selected from drop down menu among other options like poverty and market accessibility. The darkar
potion of map shows highest number of people located in that area and vice versa.
Likewise selecting poverty from dropdown option will display poverty percent of each gewog.

Selecting Market Accessibilty from dropdown option will display people access to market in each
gewog.

Now accessing information by clicking road check box, it will show the road connection of selected
dzongkhag.

Checking education will display its location by points on which it is located. So when clicked any of
points will display information of that particular selected point or school.

Checking the Health will give the following information on Health centers for example in Gasa
Dzongkhag and its health location in each Gewog.

Clicking Historical Monuments will give the historical details of particular dzongkhag of the particular
gewog.

Sometimes it happens that the schools, BHUs and Historical monuments used to be clustered or closed
to each other in a group. So we merge together and display here

Likewise we can retrieve information from any Dzongkhags.
Since we have done with the Dzongkhag Level Map and now going with Gewog Level Map which shows
demarcation of Gewog and Dzongkhag boundries. So upon clicking any Gewog will give information of
that particular selected gewog. This map shows information of Bji gewog under Haa Dzongkhag.

This figure represents the Thematic Map via Dzongkhag level. Dzongkhag Level Thematic Maps are sub
divided into demography, education, labour and employment, Health, wealth and Income and
Administrative. Now going with the demographic population under thematic map it will give the
information of rural population in percentage wise under each Dzongkhag. Moreover for more
information the key for the rural population is given, the darker blue represents the rural population
greater than 79, this represent 66-79, this represent 54-66,this represents 41-54, it represent 41-54, it
represent 29-41 and lastly the lighter blue show the rural population less than 29%.
Below data shows the

projection of 2010.

This map represents the thematic maps via dzongkhag level of demographic Population Projection of
2010. The information for the population projection 2010 will be displayed in the table. Moreover the
key is also given.

Now going with the thematic map of the demographic rural population, when we click the rural
population the dzongkhag wise percentage of the rural Population will be shown.

Lastly, going with the demographic proportion of population elder than age 65 the map and the data of
the dzongkhags for the proportion of population elder than age 65 will be displayed.

We finished about the demographic of the dzongkhags, now with Education: - Education of the
Dzongkhags is sub divided into Gross enrolment Ratio, Net Enrolment ration and Literacy Ration.
Going with Gross Enrollment Ration the map and the data for dzongkhags will be displayed. At the left
side we have shown the key for more information, whereby the darker blue represents the net
Enrolment ratio greater than 75. This represents the net Enrolment ratio 70- 75 and so on…..

Now with thematic maps of education net enrollment ratio of dzongkhags, the map and information of
the net enrolment ratio will be shown. Nevertheless the key is also shown at the side of the map for
more information.

When we click on the literacy ration of Education the literacy map and the information of the literacy
ratio dzongkhags will be displayed. For easy to view in the map the key for the literacy ration is shown
here.

After Education we have labour and employment, Labour and employment can be divided into two: -\
1. Unemployment
2. Labour force Participation
Going with Unemployment, the map and the details of the unemployment will be shown. Here
dzongkhags level Unemployment percentage is displayed. Now with the key the darker one represent
the unemployment rate grater then 5 and it goes on.
Under labour and employment we have labour force participation. When we click here it displays the
map and the labour and employment percentages records of dzongkhags.
