Guidelines for Coaches

Coaches are teachers first
Coaches are role models
Coaches must be professional
Dead Period
Out of season coaches should not have
any contact with student athletes for
a two (2) week period. One (1)
week before tryouts and the week of
tryouts.
No conditioning, weight training, open
gym, or practice.
Supervision
A. Before Practice
1. Study Hall
2. Team meeting
B. After Practice:
Must supervise all athletes until
they are picked-up/or have
cleared the locker room
Practice Schedule
Printed practice for athletes, parents
and Athletic Office.
Abide by the 10 day rule.
No Sunday practices, open gym or
contact is to be made with student
athletes.
Two (2) a days count only as 1
day of practice.
Recruiting
Do Not Recruit!! It’s not worth it.
Let students and parents know your
philosophy regarding recruiting.
Choose to win with the athletes that
live in your attendance zone.
There is a (2) year suspension for coaches
caught recruiting.
NIAA Rosters
Athletes are not allowed to participate
until they have been cleared by the
athletic director and placed on a NIAA
roster.
Coaches should sign and be provided a
copy of the NIAA roster.
If an athletes is not listed on your copy of
the roster—he/she does not play.
Academic Eligibility Requirements
All athletes must have earned two (2) credits the
previous semester.
All athletes must have 2.0 grade point average
(GPA) from the previous semester.
Coaches should emphasis the importance of
grades to all potential athletes.
Monitor student-athletes early.
Consider a study hall for potential studentathletes.
Communication With Parents
Participate in the school parent night
Prepare student-athletic handbook or handout.
Discuss any unusual rules in your program
Discuss your academic philosophy with parents.
All information distributed to parents should be
cleared through the athletic office.
Parent Concerns
Advise administrators and/or Athletic
Director of any issues
Coach should attempt to resolve the
issue first
Coach needs to have a witness when
talking with a parent.
Substance Abuse Policy
• Review the NIAA Substance Abuse Policy.
•
Includes in-season and out of season athletes.
•
Effective for the calendar school year.
• Provides an opportunity for students and parents to view
the DVD or the power point
•
All student-athletes and parents must sign the contract.
•
Discuss the penalties with all student athletes and
parents.
