Conestoga Country Club was founded in 1948. During the ensuing years, our club has gained a reputation as an exceptional facility where individuals and families can enjoy recreational activities and social events. The Club provides excellent opportunities for people to make new friends and create lifetime relationships. IDEAL LOCATION Conestoga Country Club is easily accessible from Routes 30 or 462. The Club is located at 1950 Stone Mill Road. The Conestoga creek winds through the beautiful tree-lined fairways. MAGNIFICENT GOLF COURSE Our scenic 6,288 yard, par 70, 18 hole golf course provides both beginners and experienced golfers with a marvelous golf challenge. The course has plush fairways and some of the best greens in the county; it is well balanced with very tight fairways, wooded areas, traps, and a creek for a water hazard. Following course play, one may enjoy a warm, relaxing shower in the appropriate men’s or ladies’ locker rooms, and enjoy a cool, refreshing drink in the Pub, on the Deck or in the 19th Hole. A CONDENSED HISTORY OF CONESTOGA COUNTRY CLUB It all began around 1933 at the Overlook Public Golf Course. Thirty of the regular members got together and obtained a charter as a non-profit corporation with the name Overlook Country Club, which would later be changed to Conestoga Country Club in 1946. This charter allowed Overlook to enter regional and statewide events with the distinction of a country club name. Dues were one dollar per year. After several years, the Overlook Public Golf Course owner announced his intentions to sell the course. He offered the Overlook Country Club an option which was never acted upon. It did, however, encourage a vision for the future; a vision which would eventually become Conestoga Country Club. Lacking sufficient funds, the group investigated business opportunities. They decided to build a much-needed bowling facility. Twenty-two, first class bowling alleys would cost $45,000, which was much less than the cost of a golf course. This was a substantial investment for a handful of golfers. To get things started, each member raised $100 each. Notes were issued by the club and eventually it raised $10,000 that was used as a down payment. lt rented the third floor of a downtown building and went into business as Overlook Recreational Center. By 1947, the alleys were paid for, and they produced a dependable net income of $10,000 per year. Clair Alexander, then president, was responsible for locating a proper site for a country club golf course. Following an extensive search, he found and obtained a 97 acre farm (plus two parcels) that became Conestoga Country Club. The property cost $34,000, and the club only had one-third of the money. A new issue of notes was offered to members, relatives and friends. Members began reducing the gross cost of the property by harvesting and selling the standing crops. They sold one of the two farm-houses, a barn, and a tobacco shed. They also sold a few building lots to insulate the course from a bordering public road. ln the end, they had 118 acres at a net cost of$11,000. The sale of notes was disappointing, raising only $44,000 (the largest single investment was $3,000). ln those days, architects required $100,000 to lay out golf courses. A worried delegation contacted William 1|Page Gordon, a well known golf architect, and explained the situation. The members asked if he would lay out the course, and stated that they would build it themselves. He agreed and proceeded at a reduced fee. Members began the work using a truck (so ancient that a dealer gave it to them), a tractor (which cost them $50 at a junk yard), and a supply of saw and axes. They borrowed a plow and a disc harrow from neighboring farmers. They removed over 2,000 trees from along the creek. They worked for free, putting in long hours. Charles Dyer and Ollie Frey, at about 600 hours each, no doubt put in the most time. By the middle of 1953, it seemed that Conestoga had it made. Then in September of that year, their bowling center, (and the income on which they were relying to build a clubhouse), was completely destroyed by fire. Fortunately, it was covered by insurance, and they recovered $70,000. Opening Day for Conestoga was June 20, 1948. And today, the heritage lives on. 2|Page 2016-2017 BOARD OF GOVERNORS OFFICERS President: Robert H. Devenney Vice-President: Paul A. Gimeson Treasurer: Frederick R.
