Our neighborhood Publix will be donating all of the apples because they are our Partner in Education
and they would like to help us celebrate. The only item we need to purchase is the candy apple mix.
We researched and found different prices to purchase the candy apple mix. Which store will give us
the better rate per serving? Every student will receive one candy apple. Show all your work. (Round
to the nearest cent if necessary.)
Carnival Depot : $8.00 per bag…makes 40-50 apples
By using division, we can calculate the unit rate of price per apple.
Using the number of 40 apples, the rate will be $.20 per apple. Students may choose to use 45 or 50.
Three bags will be necessary to have all the students receive 1 apple. $8.00 x 3 = $24.00 total.
Students might use a different strategy to come up with the answers, such as tables, pictures, tape
diagrams, counting up. All strategies should be accepted as long as they can justify the thinking.
Walmart: $ 15.95 for 9 oz. Makes 40 apples.
By using division, we can calculate the unit rate of price per apple.
$15.95 divided by 40 = $.39875 (which can be rounded to $.40) per apple. If we multiply that by 120
students, the total cost would be $47.85. Another way to calculate is knowing that 9 oz. makes 40
apples and we need 120, we can multiply the 40 by 3 and then the $15.95 by 3 to arrive at $47.85 for
the total cost.
Fun Foods Inc: $36.00 per case. 2 bags per case. Each bag makes 60 apples.

We found different prices to purchase the corn dog mix. 12 oz. of
mix will make 12 corn dogs. Which store will give us the better

Multiply that by 120 = $180.

to give every student ½ or 1 serving of funnel cake depending on the
price. Which store will give us the better rate per serving? One
serving is about 1 ounce of mix. Show all your work. (Round to the

enough to have every student get two funnel cakes.

kernels. We would like to give each student 1 cup
of popcorn. Which store will give us the better rate

Carnival Depot : 64 fl. oz. of kernels for $4.00.Use
division to calculate unit rate. Divide $4 by 64 oz =
about $.06 per oz. Since 8 fl. oz. = 1 cup = $.06 x 8 =
$.48 per cup
Multiply $.48 x 120 students = $57.60 total cost.
Walmart: 80 fl. oz. of kernels for $5.85. Use
division to calculate unit rate. Divide $5.85 by 80 is
about .0731…(Round to $.07) $.07 is the unit rate
per oz. Since 8 fl. oz. = 1 cup = $.07 x 8 oz = $.56
per cup x 120 students = $67.20 total cost.

referring to a unit of mass 16 oz. = 1 pound. It
represents “fluid ounces” a measure of volume
that is 8 fl. oz. = 1 cup.
