JOB DESCRIPTION: Head Athletic Coach
ROLE: The head coach instructs athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical
training necessary for them to realize a degree of team and individual success. The head
coach offers instruction that will lead to the formation of Christian attitudes toward healthy
competition including appreciation for the value of teamwork, the importance of
commitment, hard work, and the achieving of short and long term goals. The need for
respect and tolerance of the abilities and opinions of others is essential.
DUTIES:
1.
Support and participate in all aspects of the school's strategic plan processes.
2.
Have a thorough knowledge of the Mission of Moreau Catholic High School and the
philosophy of the Moreau Catholic athletic department.
3.
Have comprehensive knowledge of the athletic policies of Moreau Catholic High
School and is responsible for their implementation by the entire staff.
4.
Have knowledge of existing CIF, NCS, and league regulations and implements them
consistently.
5.
Understand the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or
grievances through proper channels.
6.
Attend all school, league, and department meetings.
7.
Demonstrate loyalty to the school's athletic program as a whole; this attitude should be
expressed by cooperating with other athletic programs in the school, supporting the
efforts of other coaches, promoting school spirit and pride in all athletes, and by
attending contests in other sports when possible.
8.
Observe all CIF, NCS or school rules regarding recruiting of potential student. Does
not use undue influence on Moreau students regarding their choices as to which
sports they will compete in.
STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES
9.
Assist the Athletic Director in recruiting qualified lower-level head coaches and
assistants.
10. Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff.
Design staff meetings to insure staff awareness of overall program and school policies.
Prepare daily practice plans which are kept on file; review plans of lower level
coaches.

11. Train and inform staff, encourage professional growth through clinic attendance.
12. Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation, and at season's end, analyze staff
effectiveness and evaluate all assistants in conjunction with the Athletic Director.
13. Maintain discipline, handle grievances, and strive to reinforce positive morale and
cooperation.
14. Perform such other duties which may be assigned by the Athletic Director or the
Principal.
ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:
15. Assist the Athletic Director in scheduling contests, practice times, arranging for
transportation, and special event needs.
16. Provide for facility set up and take down for contests and practice; adheres to
scheduled facility times; coordinates program with maintenance and school
employees.
17. Assist the Athletic Director in providing documentation to fulfill state and school
requirements concerning physical examinations, medical releases, parental consent,
eligibility, etc.
18. Provide proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of facilities, event
equipment, and player equipment.
19. Prepare daily practice plans which are kept on file.
20. Follow the guidance and direction of the school trainer in all matters pertaining to the
health and physical condition of participants. Receive evidence of a release from a
physician before allowing an injured athlete to return to competition or practice.
21. Perform the required post-season evaluations, season summaries, etc., as required by
the Athletic Director.
22. Participate with the Athletic Director in a pre and post-season evaluation process
which includes goal settings.
23. Advise the Athletic Director and recommends policy, method, or procedural changes.
STUDENT-ATHLETE RESPONSIBILITIES
24. Provide each team member with a booklet detailing team expectations and policies as
well as training rules and safety requirements. Determine criteria for earning a block
at the varsity level of the sport.

25. Give constant attention to the safety of the student-athlete.
26. Gives constant attention to grades and conduct of student-athletes, providing
academic assistance when needed.
27. By his/her presence at all practices, games, and while traveling, provides assistance,
guidance, and safeguards for each participant.
28. Follow all policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
29. Complete accident reports on all injuries requiring medical attention and submits them
to the Athletic Director/Trainer within 24 hours.
30. Direct student managers, scorekeepers, and statisticians and requires medical
releases for all.
31. Determines in conjunction with the Athletic Director, team rules and disciplinary policy
for violation of rules; inform assistant principal: athletics and parents if a student is to
be removed from team.
32. Assist student-athletes in their college selection.
EQUIPMENT, FACILITIES AND FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
33. Participate in the budgeting function with the Athletic Director by establishing
requirements for the next season. Recommend equipment guidelines as to type, style,
color or technical specifications. Consult with lower level head coaches in reference to
their budget needs. Be responsible for operating within budget appropriations.
34. Be accountable for all equipment. Arrange for issuing, storing and reconditioning of
equipment and submits annual inventory and current records concerning same.
35. Submit to the Athletic Director the names of any student-athletes who have not
returned issued equipment within two weeks of the end of the season.
36. Mark and identify all equipment before storing or issuing.
37. Monitor equipment rooms, locker rooms and coaches' offices, authorize who may
enter, issue or requisition equipment.
38. Permit athletes to be only in authorized areas of the building at the appropriate times.
39. Examine locker rooms, practice facilities and game facilities before and after checking
on the overall safety and general cleanliness of the facility.
40. Report immediately any safety/health concerns regarding facilities to the director of site

services and the Athletic Director.
41. Secure all doors, lights, windows and locks before leaving.
42. Instill in each player a healthy respect for safety rules.
43. Ensure player respect for school equipment and property.
PUBLIC RELATIONS
44. Organize parents, coaches, players and guests for any scheduled pre-season meeting.
45. Promote the sport within the school; write appropriate announcements for the daily
bulletin concerning events and results and communicate the results of the games within 12
hours to the Athletic Director.
46. Be responsible for the quality, effectiveness and validity of any oral or written release
to the local media.
47. Be responsible for maintaining good public relations with news media, Booster club,
parents, officials, volunteers and fans.
48. Present information to news media concerning schedules, games and tournament
results, etc,; be responsible for all contest results (win or lose) being reported to the local
press.
49. Organize post-season awards night.
