Press Release
ASAM Venturing into Standardizing Telematics Solutions
The ASAM Board of Directors has confirmed that the ASAM organization will increase its
work scope towards an area broadly labeled "Telematics". The topic is closely aligned to
the recent ASAM International Conference topic of Big Data held in Dresden, Germany.
The member organization Cummins Inc. has approached ASAM with the request to
further develop use cases relating to "Remote Two Way Communications” as a first step
in a standard development process.
HOEHENKIRCHEN, GERMANY, 2015 – Cummins Inc. and ASAM will co-host a workshop with
the global OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers on March 31, 2016 in Novi, Michigan, US to begin the
process of gathering use cases and discuss standardization potential in the areas of telematics
security, remote software / calibration updates, remote adjustment, remote diagnostics,
prognostics, and Big Data exchanges services. This workshop, which is open for all interested
OEMs and Tier-1s (members and non-members), shall create a common understanding of the
topic as well as challenges that need to be addressed during a standardization project.
“ASAM is the right community for development of this type of project”, said Gorance Eftimovski,
Director of Engineering, Connected Systems and Controls Calibration FE, and Board Member
of ASAM. “ASAM’s history and industry connections in measurement, calibration, diagnostics
systems and data storage systems make ASAM the perfect intersection to bring together user
needs, requirements, and solutions from the marketplace.”
Joseph Sparacino, Business Development Manager at ASAM, knows how crucial it is to
develop the right use cases before bringing the major telematics providers on board. "Right
now, we are consolidating the business use cases with OEMs and Tier-1s. However, our
experience tells us that it will be essential for all relevant stakeholders to take part in the
standardization process in order to develop a successful, well accepted standard. Therefore,
our next step will be to work with the many global telematics providers and stakeholders to codevelop a technical standard," he says.

So far, the work scope of ASAM has been defined as the areas relating to Measurement &
Calibration, ECU Networks, Diagnostics, Test Automation, Software Development and Data
Management & Analytics. With the successful accomplishment of this project, Telematics will
soon complement the ASAM work scope.
About ASAM e.V.
ASAM e.V. coordinates the development of technical standards. These standards define
protocols, data models, file formats and application programming interfaces (APIs) for the use in
the development and testing of automotive electronic control units. A large amount of popular
tools in the areas of simulation, measurement, calibration and test automation are compliant to
ASAM standards. Compliance shall guarantee interoperability of tools from different vendors,
allow data exchange without the need for converters, and facilitate the exchange of
unambiguous specification between customers and suppliers.
Founded in 1998 as a German association, ASAM has today more than 140 international
members, including major OEMs in Germany, France, US, Japan, and China. ASAM has a
portfolio of 22 standards among them the well established MCD (measuring, calibration,
diagnostics)-standards with a market distribution of up to 80% worldwide. The infrastructural
standards of ASAM are used by many of the big international OEMs.
