Close to 100 elementary school students in the Salisbury Youth Association will have to
hang up their Chuck Taylors just when they were finding the range on their jump shots.
The league has canceled the final two weeks of its season for players in kindergarten
through third grade after Salisbury Township School District demanded the association
hire paid security for game nights at Truman Elementary School.

''We got most of the season in,'' association President Frank Walsh said. ''Of course,
many of the kids are disappointed about not being able to finish.''
School Board President Russell Giordano said parents had gotten lax about controlling
access to the school and the custodian reported children in areas they shouldn't be in.

Preschool Teacher School
Earn a degree in Teaching online from Phoenix
University.
Three teenagers recently entered
the school through an open door
and stayed there for a half hour
without being asked to leave, she
said.
A rising level of crime in the area,
including break-ins to teachers' cars
during the school day and a school
director's car during a night meeting,
made the concerns more serious,
she said.
''For us to simply allow our building
to have ready access by anybody in
the evenings was unacceptable,''
Giordano said.
Samide said problems with
monitoring children at the games go
back years, and the league was on notice it had to deal with them. The district had paid
a custodian overtime at a cost of $5,000 to $8,000 a year, but decided around 2003 to
stop the practice as long as association parents monitored the school.

Walsh said he's not sure why the district couldn't let the children finish the final two
weeks of their season.
He admitted parents had gotten a little lax about controlling access to the school, and it
was the association's decision not to dip into its operating fund to hire security guards for
the rest of the season.
In the end, Walsh said, Jake Fox, who runs' the association's basketball program, offered
to take care of security himself, only to be turned down.
''Never at any point in time were any of our kids or participants at any risk and there was
no damage done to the school,'' Walsh said. ''In my opinion this is the school being more
concerned about possible damage to their property than the kids'' being able to play,
Walsh said.

Samide said the district wasn't willing to wait for the season to end because the league
was put on notice long ago it should be ready to hire Graham Security of Emmaus at $15
an hour if the problems weren't resolved.

''Anything can happen in two weeks,'' she said.
Walsh said the league has a small budget and tries to charge fees low enough for
everyone to afford. They don't factor in the cost of security.
Parent Marc Eripret said his 8-year-old daughter Margot was crushed.
''With two weeks to go, we could have found a temporary solution and met at the end of
the season ...to find something to make it better,'' he said.
Giordano said the district doesn't want a feud with the youth association.
''For next year, if someone can come up with something creative to get us to the
objective, we aren't going to insist this is the only way to achieve this,'' Giordano said.
