Three teenagers recently entered the school through an open door and stayed there for a half hour without being asked to leave, she said. A rising level of crime in the area, including break-ins to teachers' cars during the school day and a school director's car during a night meeting, made the concerns more serious, she said. ''For us to simply allow our building to have ready access by anybody in the evenings was unacceptable,'' Giordano said. Samide said problems with monitoring children at the games go back years, and the league was on notice it had to deal with them. The district had paid a custodian overtime at a cost of $5,000 to $8,000 a year, but decided around 2003 to stop the practice as long as association parents monitored the school. www.University-Phoenix-Info.com Walsh said he's not sure why the district couldn't let the children finish the final two weeks of their season. He admitted parents had gotten a little lax about controlling access to the school, and it was the association's decision not to dip into its operating fund to hire security guards for the rest of the season. In the end, Walsh said, Jake Fox, who runs' the association's basketball program, offered to take care of security himself, only to be turned down. ''Never at any point in time were any of our kids or participants at any risk and there was no damage done to the school,'' Walsh said. ''In my opinion this is the school being more concerned about possible damage to their property than the kids'' being able to play, Walsh said. http://www.mcall.com/news/local/all-b1_5sya.6784325feb16,0,350543.story[2/16/2009 12:21:39 PM] Most e-mailed Hot topics Pennsylvania rethinks smoking ban in hotel bars after lawsuits are threatened South Whitehall man dies of medical condition, not car crash Salisbury ends basketball season early due to foul play Funeral arrangements announced for slain Philadelphia officer Coopersburg man sentenced for child porn, exposing himself over Internet More most viewed Salisbury ends basketball season early due to foul play -- themorningcall.com Travel Brochure Cars 2008 NEWSPAPER Samide said the district wasn't willing to wait for the season to end because the league was put on notice long ago it should be ready to hire Graham Security of Emmaus at $15 an hour if the problems weren't resolved. ''With two weeks to go, we could have found a temporary solution and met at the end of the season ...to find something to make it better,'' he said.
