Employment Opportunity – Job Description Trainee Stonemason To assume the position of trainee stonemason reporting directly to the Contracts Manager and work under the general direction of the Managing Director at Prelude Stone. Assisting with all aspects of stone masonry onsite installation works. Duties include: Set stone to build structures, such as piers, walls, and abutments, or lay walks, kerbstones, or special types of masonry such as alberene, using masons tools: shapes stone preparatory to setting, using chisel, hammer, and other shaping tools. Spread mortar over stone and foundation with trowel and sets stone in place using appropriate techniques. Align stone with plumbline and finishes joints between stone with pointing trowel. Spread mortar along mortar guides to ensure joints of uniform thickness. Clean surface of finished wall to remove mortar, using muriatic acid and brush. Clean excess mortar or grout from surface of marble, stone, or monument, using sponge, brush, water, or acid. Drill holes in marble or ornamental stone and anchor brackets in holes. Lay out wall patterns or foundations, using straight edge, rule, or staked lines. Mix mortar or grout and pour or spread mortar or grout on marble slabs, stone, or foundation. Remove wedges, fill joints between stones, finish joints between stones, using a trowel, and smooth the mortar to an attractive finish, using a tuck pointer. Set stone or marble in place, according to layout or pattern. Shape, trim, face and cut marble or stone preparatory to setting, using power saws, cutting equipment, and hand tools. Smooth, polish, and bevel surfaces, using hand tools and power tools. Dig trench for foundation of monument, using pick and shovel. Line interiors of molds with treated paper and fill molds with composition-stone mixture. Position mold along guidelines of wall, press mold in place, and remove mold and paper from wall. Remove sections of monument from truck bed, and guide stone onto foundation, using skids, hoist, or truck crane. Repair cracked or chipped areas of stone or marble, using blowtorch and mastic, and remove rough or defective spots from concrete, using power grinder or chisel and hammer. Set vertical and horizontal alignment of structures, using plumb bob, gauge line, and level. Construct and install prefabricated masonry units. Lay brick to build shells of chimneys and smokestacks or to line or reline industrial furnaces, kilns, boilers and similar installations. Replace broken or missing masonry units in walls or floors. This position will also have scope for further development to improver level working on sites including but not limited to London and the Home Counties. Preferred Qualifications: CSCS card NVQ level 2 Full clean driver’s license (desirable) SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE The above outlines the key skills the job holder will need to possess and exercise. In addition, either knowledge of or experience in the following is required: A focused and disciplined approach to carrying out work of a high standard while sympathetic to working on structures of historic significance Demonstrable high levels of interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to manage time efficiently and effectively An eye for detail and finish/ gains satisfaction from undertaking such work Able to work as part of a team or as an individual Flexible and adaptable attitude to work with high degree of self-motivation Good organisational and time-management skills, including the ability to prioritise work where necessary The individual should be comfortable with working in often extreme or unusual environments, for example high scaffolds. Desirable Previous experience in the construction industry would be an advantage. A demonstrable interest and/or self-motivated pursuit to research and gain knowledge in the field of stonemasonry and building conservation. Some experience using computers.
