It goes without saying that people nowadays are concerned about their
appearance. However, it is not just in modern times that people have risked their
health to look attractive. In ancient Europe, white skin was considered attractive.
1 , many ancient Greeks and Romans were obsessed with applying special
makeup to their faces in order to look pale. Nevertheless, it never occurred to them
that this makeup contained lead,
2
, in turn, caused them many health
problems,
3
sores and infertility. Today,
4
aware of this fact, many
people still use similar makeup to whiten their skin.
Now that tanned skin is getting popular, those who want darker skin often use
tanning beds or take tanning pills to
5
this trend. However,
6
of
these methods can be harmful to one’s health. According to recent scientific research,
using a tanning bed more than once a month increases the risk of contracting skin
cancer
7
55 percent. Second, tanning pills contain certain kinds of additives
that are actually dangerous, even for short-term use.

VII. Reading Comprehension

statement.
Hope in a Jar
How much importance do we attach to our physical appearances? Just look at
this number and the answer is self-evident: the global beauty industry, including the
cosmetic industry and cosmetic surgery, is rapidly growing by 7 percent every year.
The cosmetic industry started off with very simple kitchen recipes. For example,
in 1909, Eugene Schueller founded the French Harmless Hair Colouring Co., which
today is called L’Oreal. Two years later, Paul Beiersdorf invented the first cream that
bound oil and water. Today, this cream is sold in 150 countries around the world and
is called Nivea. What started as small home-run companies have now become huge
corporations.
In order to deal with increasing competition, cosmetic companies have started to
hire stars to “sell” their products. Models in magazines state that their makeup has
been done using products from companies such as Lancôme or Clarins. Famous
actresses pose in advertisements for brand-name lipsticks or perfumes. By associating
famous faces with their products, companies have been able to increase their sales.
Customers simply want to look as good as their feminine heroes and are ready to
spend money on creams or other articles in order to help them achieve this goal.
Another field in full expansion is cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgeons’
customers are not only renowned stars. In America, the number of breast implants
(隆乳) and liposuction treatments undergone by teenagers rose by 562 percent
between 1994 and 2001. The quest for a better physical appearance now starts at a
very young age in certain countries around the world.
Our desire to look better and to look younger supports what Charles Revson, the
founder of the Revlon Company, once stated about his “hope in a jar” having a great
future!

寫作練習
I believe true beauty should be natural, not artificial. Therefore, I will not undergo surgery
simply to look better. No one is perfect, and this is what makes us all special. If everyone in the
world had the same big eyes, and the same prominent nose, the world would become a boring place.
In my opinion, it is wonderful to be different from others. As we grow older, there will be more and
more wrinkles on our skin. Wrinkles are not ugly, but symbols of wisdom. If a person reaches the
age of eighty and still has no wrinkle on his or her face, I may see him or her as a monster instead
of a normal human being!
