What do umpires Need from the
UM at a tournament ?
 They want to be part of a team.
 The UM should also be part of the same team.
 The UM should build the team and keep it
together.
 A good, happy team will show on the pitch.

6
What do umpires Need from the UM
at a tournament ?
 The umpire needs the UM to be on his/her side after
the game. They do not need to be told what they
did wrong when they are walking off the pitch.
 They do not want you to be talking about them to
any other umpire.
 You
should not be talking about forthcoming
appointments in the tournament.

What do umpires Need from the UM
at a tournament?
 They need to be de-briefed.

 They need to be given objective guidance on areas
they need to work on.
 Your job as an UM is not just for this tournament.
The umpire has a lot to offer hockey. If they aren’t
