Denton High School Cheerleading Captain Application
We will have 1 captain and 1 co-captain per squad for the 2016-2017 season.
If you are interested in being considered for a captain position, please
complete the following application, and return it to Coach Weaver or Coach
Sawyer by Thursday, May 5th, by 3pm. NO EXCEPTIONS. Teacher
recommendations must be completed and turned in by Monday, May 9th. You
will not collect these forms from your teachers, your only responsibility is to
give them the forms, and follow up with them for completion (do not hound
or rush them, if you encounter a problem with completion please let your
coach know). It is your responsibility to give your teachers plenty of time to
fill out these forms. This time of year is crazy, so do not wait until the last
minute. These tasks must be completed on time to be considered for a
captain position. Submission of a captain application does not guarantee a
spot as a captain; rather it guarantees your consideration for that position.

Expectations for Captains:








Be a liaison between Cheerleaders and Coach during the season
Demonstrate leadership both in and out of uniform
Be the first one to come and the last one to leave at practices, games
and events
Help delegate/coordinate spirit raising, fundraising and team bonding
Help to foster an environment of growth and encouragement among
the team
Work with the team individually and as a whole, recognizing that each
individual member is a vital part of our team and helping them to learn
and be the best they can be
Work cohesively and supportively with the other captain and the
coaches
Maintain a passing average in all classes, at all times

Possess leadership skills, maintain good organizational skills, and
demonstrate a strong sense of responsibility
Election: All applicants will participate in a tryout that will be judged based
on the following criteria:
o Instruction/Teaching ability and creativity. This will consist of the
applicant teaching a three 8 count dance to the other cheerleaders at
practice. They will only have three 8 counts to show their creativity,
and ability to teach a dance in an allotted time period of 15 minutes.
The applicant must provide their own music.
o Teacher Input- Classroom behavior, grades, and attendance. The
teacher input form MUST be filled out by each teacher, or the
applicant will not be considered for captain. If issues arise with lack
of completion due to the teacher’s part, please let a coach know
immediately; waiting until after the deadline will result in
disqualification of the applicant.
o Panel Interview-The applicant will be asked a series of questions by a
panel interview during the week of captain tryouts. For 8th graders,
this will be at practice on Tuesday, May 10, 2016. The applicants that
currently attend DHS will be given an interview time/date at a later
notice.
o Tryout Score
o Coaches Evaluation of all of the above criteria.
