Project Title: Moonwater System Test
Project proposal (background, justification, objectives, methods, timeline, etc):
Stable isotope analysis is often limited to samples taken during field visits. The
Moonwater system offers an opportunity for in situ stable isotope analysis. The
objective of this study is to test the newly developed Moonwater system in a real
world location over a period of several days. The Moonwater system is roughly
the size of a shoebox (see Figure 1). The system would be deployed in or near a
stream for several days, using a small internal pump the system would sample
water at intervals. Water not used by the system will be delivered back into the
stream or nearby soil. After the stream deployment, the system will also be used
at various locations throughout the basin for one-time in situ sampling.
Describe the project location:
The project would focus on Providence Creek, with a target stream site of P301.
Housing the unit within the P301 instrument shed may be desirable. The system
will be self-powered. Other locations to be tested instantaneously may include,
but are not limited to: P300, P303, P304, D102, wells, piezometers, SSCZO
precipitation isotope samplers, and multiple locations along stream channels.
Duration and period of use:
December 13-December 21, 2012
Describe any markers, including tags, flagging, stakes, fencing, or other to be used:
No markers or flagging will be used. The unit may be housed in a small plastic
box or bucket for 2-3 days near a stream site.
Will other USFS facilities or resources be needed? ☐ Yes ☒ No
If Yes, please describe:
Do you intend to publish your results? ☐ Yes ☒ No
If Yes, please remember to site necessary parties (ex. SSCZO, KREW, etc.)
If implementation of your project includes use of humans as experimental subjects
or radiation, biological, or toxic chemicals, please explain.
Please provide the required proof of liability insurance, or fill out the necessary UC
Merced liability waiver form before accessing research site.

I will provide annual progress reports, electronic copies of all published reports, and a
final report at the end of the study. I agree to remove all study markers and equipment at
the end of the study. I also plan to adhere to the SSCZO data policy.
