It is our goal to prepare students for various post-secondary and pre-professional pursuits in their art area major. Application and Audition Procedure BCA is open to all rising 9th grade students in Berkeley County School District. These students should be gifted in one of our seven disciplines (Theatre, Visual Arts, Creative Writing, Dance, Voice/Chorus, Strings, and Winds & Percussion). BCA also accepts students in their sophomore year on a case by case basis. Sophomore students must be selected by their teacher and approved by the program director and guidance counselor. Students interested in attending BCA must first complete the current application packet. Students must include their personal information, two teacher provided letters of recommendation, a current picture, and a personal statement. Based upon the student major, he or she may be required to include additional information. Students intending to attend the large spring audition must have their audition packet completed and submitted by the designated deadline. After completing their application packet, students must prepare to attend spring auditions. Upon submitting a completed application packet students will be mailed an audition date and time. Students who are unable to attend the spring audition for a valid reason, may arrange a private audition with the teacher of their major. Though BCA operates on a rolling audition process, additional auditions after the spring audition are contingent upon space and availability only. Upon arriving at their auditions, students will be judged on a variety of criteria including ability and professionalism. Student should plan to speak about their experiences and goals relating to the art of their choice. In addition, many students will be asked to perform a selected piece or complete a particular task. After completing their audition, students will be notified as to the status of their admission within 2 weeks. 3 Criteria to Maintain Enrollment In order to remain in good standing at BCA, students must obtain six credits during each academic year. In addition, students must have an 80 average or higher in their art area major at the end of each academic year. Students who are unable to maintain BCA enrollment criteria will be subject to academic and/or artistic probation, or removal from the program. All decisions related to enrollment status are made by the program director and the GCHS head principal. Academic Probation At the conclusion of each academic year, BCA students who have not obtained 6 credits, will be placed on academic probation. These students will each be assigned a mentor teacher who will monitor their academic progress for the fall semester of the next academic year. The mentor teacher will develop an intervention plan with the student that is to be submitted to the school administration. At the conclusion of the first semester, students will interview with the program director for removal from probationary status in order to remain in BCA. Artistic Probation At the conclusion of each quarter, students who earn a grade of 80 or lower in any of their art area major classes will be placed on artistic probation. Students will be required to raise their grade over the next quarter or their probation will continue for the remainder of the school year. Students who remain on artistic probation for the remainder of the year will be assigned a mentor who will create an intervention plan. At the conclusion of the school year, these students will be interviewed by both the program director and their art major teachers to determine whether they will be allowed to remain in BCA for the next school year. BCA Certificate In order to receive a BCA Certificate of Completion, students must complete 6 courses in their art major by the end of their senior year. In addition, students must successfully complete their senior thesis/recital. Completing the BCA program represents the student’s willingness and ability to exceed expectations of the South Carolina High School diploma. In addition, these students have 4 accomplished mastery of the expectations for secondary education as it pertains to his or her discipline. Rehearsal Attendance Policy In order to ensure student mastery of their discipline, rehearsing with instructors present is absolutely essential. Instructor led rehearsals ensure that students are developing proper technique and are working to develop good habits that will lead to mastery of their discipline. To that end, students will be issued a rehearsal schedule at the beginning of each quarter. Rehearsals not attended will result in a grade deduction. Students must attend at least 80% of all instructor led rehearsals. 20% of rehearsals not attended can be excused using a legitimate excuse and an alternate assignment. In order to be excused from rehearsals, students must give prior notice and supply an excuse (such as a doctors note) to their instructor upon return. In preparation for the annual BCA Showcase, students must attend 100% of director scheduled performances. This policy is in place to ensure that BCA students continue to develop superior artistic talent. It is the goal of BCA that our students are capable of performing on a post-secondary level upon graduation. In addition, rehearsal attendance is essential to ensure that public performances are reflective of the standards and expectations of BCA. To that end, if a student is consistently unable to attend instructor led rehearsals, he or she may be placed in regular art electives. Performance Attendance Policy One of the major goals of BCA is to ensure that students develop superior talent in their major area of fine arts. Displaying this talent through public performances is essential to BCA recruitment and retention. Teachers will issue performance schedules at the beginning of each semester. Student’s attendance at all performances is absolutely mandatory. Failure to attend a performance will result in a zero performance grade. Teachers are not mandated to provide students with alternate assignments for failure to attend a performance. Performances are 40% of students overall grade. 5 BCA Department Grade Weights BCA teachers use department grade weights. Each teacher is expected to adhere to these overall department weights for grading, however teachers are free to create sub-categories for each area. Teachers are not allowed to weigh any area higher than the percentages listed below and no assignment can be classified in multiple areas. Classwork / Participation Test / Performances Preparation / Homework / Rehearsals 40% 40% 20% Dress Code Policy In order to ensure that all BCA programs maintain the highest standard of professionalism, many art area majors have instituted rehearsal and/or performance dress codes. Students in each art area will be held accountable for adhering to dress codes established by their program instructor. Fees In an effort to make certain that all BCA students are able to fulfill the basic requirements needed to be successful in their art major, all BCA programs assess their students a minimal fee. Program fees and deadlines for payment are outlined in each discipline’s course syllabus. Each BCA student should receive a syllabus at orientation or at the beginning of each school year. 6 BCA Program of Study The BCA program of study is designed to provide students with options that will allow them to refine their skills in a specific area of their art major. Courses offered in the BCA program are tailored to student’s specific interests, allowing them to be fully engaged in the pursuit of the mastery of their craft. In order to be considered a BCA completer, students must successfully complete 6 BCA courses by the end of their senior year. All 9th grade students are mandated to take the same entry level courses, however students in grades 10th – 12th will be allowed to sit down with the BCA guidance counselor to select courses that are specific to their particular area of interest. During their senior year, all BCA students will be working toward the completion of their senior thesis, despite their course load. These students will work with the teacher of their art major to select and design a senior thesis.
