Jews in the church were causing problems Key Truth Dying to our old sin nature is a requirement for living a life of service to God. Overview Leave That Old Sin Behind We Are “The Living Dead” The Picture of Death That Leads to Life Just Don’t “Do It” Leave That Old Sin Behind Romans 6 : 1 - 3 Leave That Old Sin Behind The purpose of grace God’s grace is sufficient to cover all of our sins So why not go ahead and sin? Proving the effectiveness of God’s grace is not grounds for willful sin The purpose of grace is to enable us to achieve righteousness before God Leave That Old Sin Behind Live as dead to sin Christ took our sins to the cross & died to His mortal body Reasons why sin has no place in a Christian’s life Jesus never taught sin as a way of life Jesus lived a sinless life (He set the pattern) Jesus’ death on the cross served to conquer sin It’s not just about gaining access to life Identifying with Christ demands that we also identify with His death We are baptized “into” Christ’s death We take part in the physical death of Christ by dying to We Are “The Living Dead” Romans 6 : 4 – 7 1 Peter 3 : 18 We Are “The Living Dead” Dying to our old self means living a new life Just as Christ was resurrected to a glorified body, so we are raised to a new life in our bodies This is the symbolism of the act of baptism We identify with Christ’s death and resurrection Jesus was resurrected to a new body physically We are resurrected to a new spiritual life The old flesh that controlled our life is being put to death Before our spirit was made alive in Christ, the control of our soul (person) was dictated by the flesh 1 Peter 3:18 A Picture of Death That Leads to Life Romans 6 : 8 - 11 A Picture of Death That Leads to Life Identifying with Christ’s death brings life Christ’s death resulted in His resurrection to an eternal body Our death of the old sin nature will result in eternal life in a resurrected body A death to sin now results in eternal life later Our spiritual life now-a picture of what will be Christ’s death-brought an end to the death sentence of sin Represents our death to a life of sin Vs 11a Christ’s resurrected life-the beginning of His life lived in the presence of God Vs 10a Vs 10b Represents our new spiritual life lived for God now Vs 11b Just Don’t “Do It” Romans 6 : 12 - 14 Just Don’t “Do It” Sin-DON’T DO IT! Some of the greatest instruction from the Word of God concerning sin STOP IT! Paul gives this simple instruction because it works We choose to engage in sin or not We are the ones who “…let sin reign…” in our bodies We can’t blame anyone else giving in to temptation It’s not the fault of Hollywood It’s not our boss’ fault Just Don’t “Do It” Paul’s instructions for avoiding sin Don’t go there-avoid places/situations of temptation Dying to sin should result in a lifestyle change Substitute the old sinful ways with God’s ways Caution! This may be noticeable to others We learn God’s ways from God’s Word Paul’s encouragement for this difficult task “Sin SHALL NOT be master over you…” Sin no longer has a hold in the life of a believer Grace takes away the sticking power of sin Overview Leave That Old Sin Behind We Are “The Living Dead” The Picture of Death That Leads to Life Just Don’t “Do It” Adult Two Couples Class
