SYNOPSIS

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
No Ball Games is a dark cautionary tale exploring one
of my childhood fears, the fear of my neighbour’s
garden. When my ball went over I would be too scared
to knock on the door so I always thought I could nip
over the wall and grab it, but it was never that easy.
The fear manifested itself later with other gardens,
fields and private land, which I would inevitably break
into to fetch my stupid football. Or steal apples or
climb trees or…
Knowing I had to go into a strange world and be
a trespasser scared me, but it was also exciting, very
exciting. Of course, there was always a warning, either
from your parents or some kind of authority but we
would still find a way to get over.
Some warnings, would conjure images of fearful
garden owners. A harmless old lady would become
a scary witch, her garden, gothic and pristine, compared
to our mundane patch of grass. Our adventures were
mixed with fear and adrenaline while also hoping,
in a weird way, to be chased. This trespass fear is at the
heart of No Ball Games, the magic of a new experience
while also the heart-racing fear of the unknown and the
chase. The lure of a forbidden but fantastic brick wall
becoming an imaginary opponent who will play ball
with you when no-one else was around, the internal
monologue recited in my head, as I imagined scoring
the last minute goal in the cup final, then this dreamlike
state being interrupted when the cold reality hits you.
The ball has gone over.
Bollocks.
The other side of the wall had a compelling lure, calling
you over, no matter if there was a sign warning you not
to. It’s almost like it knew.

PRODUCER BIO
Richard Pengelley is an award-winning director with
awards for Best Music Video at the 2009 and 2010 AMA’s.
With a background in music documentaries and drama
he has directed commercials for LYNX, music videos,
with Jay Sean feat Lil’ Wayne’s “DOWN” reaching
number 1 in the USA. He was nominated for a Rose D’or
in 2006 for The Orange Playlist and has made feature
documentaries, viral films for FORD, SONY, ADIDAS,
PEPSI and the BBC. He had a creative director role
for COMIC RELIEF overseeing 4 films for FIFA and the
WORLD CUP 2010 Launch Concert and directed a 1-hour
KINGS OF LEON music special for ITV. More recently he
has directed comedy sketches for Channel 4, and
co-directed a dark music video for actor Riz Ahmed’s
alter ego, RIZ MC featuring actress Jody Whittaker and
Ben ‘Plan B’ Drew.
Producer Georgina Cowley began life as a runner in
a post-production house. She quickly realised that
Production was where she could have the most
influence and climbed the ladder till becoming
a producer at Irresistible Films. Since joining them
3 years ago she has produced over 50 titles for brands
including LACOSTE, VIVIENNE WESTWOOD,
FREELANDER, NISSAN and the BBC. Awards include
a FAB award for the Pepsi LOVE Viral and a Cannes
Lion Bronze Bullet Award for Sony Ericsson’s PUPPY
PULLING POWER.
He has shot his own short film, "Running Girl", which
was screened at the 2009 London Super8 Soho Rushes
Short Film festival and written and directed, “No Ball
Games”.
He is currently seeking finance for his first feature,
Damsel, a claustrophobic thriller.
Her first short film, WAKE IN RED NOW, won Best Short
Film at The Watershed Bristol’s Great Onion Film
Challenge.
Georgina is a problem solver and thrives under the
challenges created by filming a low budget short.
She is currently seeking finance for her next set of short
film scripts.

SOUND DESIGNER BIO
Dan Holland has worked in the camera department on
set for the last 13 years and as DOP for the last four
years.
Dan’s beautiful cinematography can be seen in his
credits including THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN
BUTTON, INDIA AND CAMBODIA UNIT and HBO’s
PARADE’S END SERIVES 5. His credits also include the
documentary series VISIONARIES: INSIDE THE CREATIVE
MIND with subjects including Tom Ford and Will.I.Am.
As well as a short film for Qatar’s World Cup bid, and
numerous commercials for companies including CISCO,
VOLVO, LEVI’S, DRAMBUIE and NIKE.
James Mather began as an apprentice film editor in 1982.
In 86', while travelling in Australia, he assisted sound on
MAD MAX BEYOND THE THUNDERDOME.
Returning home he continued to work in digital sound
on numerous AARDMAN and BOLEX BROS animated
short films, along with TV features and low budget
horror films, eventually supervising sound on CHICKEN
RUN and on to numerous features, most recently the
last 4 instalments of HARRY POTTER.
Dan lives in the country with his wife and 3 children.
Born in 2000, Adam Thomas Wright developed
a passion for acting from an early age.
At the age of 8 Adam made his debut in a Tesco
commercial. He has since gone from strength to
strength to play Tebbits in the feature film THE
AWAKENING and Perceval in LORD OF THE FLIES at the
Regents Park Open Air Theatre. Some of Adam's recent
film credits also include THE BOY WITH THE
CHOCOLATE FINGERS, CARDBOARD ANDY, ARKHAM
SANITARIUM and THE GUARDIAN ANDEL. Adam is now
living in Hertfordshire and attends the Susi Earnshaw
Theatre School in North London.
GAFFER BIO
Michael McDermott is an industry renowned Gaffer
having worked in the industry for over 30 years.
Among his numerous feature credits are included
BEHIND ENEMY LINES, INCENDIARY, TREASURE ISLAND
and HANNIBAL RISING.
Michael recently worked as second unit gaffer for Bond
film QUANTUM OF SOLACE and as rigger for NEVER
LET ME GO.
He has also worked on numerous commercials for
PEPSI, NIKE and MERCEDES.
COMPOSER BIO
Olly Fox studied Drama at Manchester University and
Music Design for Film & TV at Bournemouth University.
He has composed around 150 scores for theatre, radio,
television, and short films in collaboration with Channel
4, the BBC, and numerous theatre companies including
the National Theatre, Shakespeare¹s Globe, Royal
Shakespeare Company and Royal Court.
Olly was a founder-member of The Railtown Bottlers,
a skiffle and rockabilly band who became International
Street Entertainers of the Year and house band on
DANNY BAKER AFTER (BBC1), playing with Suggs, Nanci
Griffith, Squeeze and Alison Moyet, amongst others.
Composer credits include, for television: THE LIFE
AND TIMES OF VIVIENNE VYLE (Saunders & French
Productions/BBC). For radio: THE WIZARD OF OZ and
CALIGARI, (BBC Radio 3 & 4), and for theatre: WOMEN
BEWARE WOMEN, (National Theatre), THE MYSTERIES
(Shakespeare¹s Globe), MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
(Royal Shakespeare Company/West End).
