Market Update: Week of June 12th, 2017 Local: We are continuing to promote delicious local strawberries, with Romaine starting this week. Good things grow in Ontario: Apples Asparagus Bean Sprouts Cabbage – Green & Red Carrots Celery Root Cucumbers Fiddleheads Mini Eggplants Mushrooms Onions – Cooking Peppers – Red, Yellow, Orange Rhubarb Strawberries Tomatoes - HH Zucchini Fruit Apples No major changes this week. Expect prices on Gala apples to increase regularly for the next 2 months. Available Varieties: Ontario Nova Scotia USA Red Delicious Ambrosia Red Delicious Royal Gala Fuji Royal Gala (prices up) Granny Smith (prices up) New Zealand JAZZ Honeycrisp Kanzi Pink Lady Golden Delicious Pears Good volumes on Pears out of South Africa and Argentina with promotional pricing available. Available varieties: Washington: Anjou, Red & Green - South Africa: Bosc, Forelle (promote) South America Abate (Argentina),Packham Pomegranates Our last container out of Peru will be here next week; prices will remain the same. We will be in a bit of a gap until California fruit starts in August. Stone fruit We have a lot of Nectarines available at the moment; the quality is very nice on these. Apricots are coming to an end out of California, but we will have some fruit out of France before transitioning to Washington by the end of June. Peaches are very short and hard to come by at this time, but we do have some tree-ripened fruit available which are very good. There was a slow start on Plums this year and pricing is very high. We will have some Black Splendor varieties in stock next week - these are black Plums with a red interior that is very sweet. Prices will be very high. Cherries We have started our Washington Cherry program with our first load leaving on Wednesday. Sizing looks to be average but crops are looking to be the biggest on record. Citrus Oranges We are gapping on South African fruit. Next arrivals will be the week of June 19th. After that, we should have consistent supplies but we anticipate the market to be short until after the first week of July. We currently have a full line up of California Valencias to fill the void. 1 Juice Oranges Prices are high and will remain steady for another few weeks. Grapefruit We are strictly into South African fruit now. While we are currently meeting the demands of the business, this market is firm and we could see a gap in July. You should try and stay ahead on your purchasing. The market looks like it will turn the other way now and there will be more larger fruit and less smaller fruit - we will see. Clementines We have Gold Nuggets in now and they are outstanding! South African fruit arrived and they eat very well! We will have arrivals every week. Lemons Demand is still out pacing the supply on all Lemons. We think that we'll catch up to the volume by the second week of July. Until then, you should keep your coolers full of Lemons! Limes Supplies are steady and the market is stable. No changes expected. Berries Blackberries We are seeing very good supplies out of California; pricing remains steady. Raspberries The market has firmed up but we still have an array of pack sizes available including 6x12oz, 12x6oz and Organic Raspberries. All fruit is fresh from California. Also available are Golden and Sunshine Raspberries from Driscoll's. Strawberries No changes this week as the market remains steady. Quality is outstanding! We expect to have good promotional opportunities available in time for the Canada Day long weekend! Blueberries New Jersey Blueberries have started this week; look for good promotions in the coming weeks. Fruit looks and tastes great! Vine and Tropical Grapes The next two weeks will be a great time to have Grapes on ad. Mexico is in their flush and the quality is excellent. We expect sizing to get a little smaller on Green varieties but with that prices will decrease. There are some bigger sizes available out of California but the market will be split on price. Pineapples We continue to see good availability and markets are expected to have good supply until week 26. Mangoes Mexican Mangoes continue this week, both Tommy and Ataulfo varieties. Bananas Prices are now stable as supply and demand are back in line. Papaya We continue with Brazilian Papaya by air and Formosa varieties this week; no market change. Avocados New crop has started. Global demand continues to keep the price high. Next week we should have good supply of bigger sizes at reasonable prices. Bags have tightened up. Watermelon Watermelons are a little tight due to rain in Florida, but it shouldn't last long. The warmer weather should help drive sales at store level. Cantaloupes California Cantaloupes are available now. Pricing is very attractive and with the heat coming on in Southern Ontario this week, they are a great item to have in stock. Promote! 2 Honeydew Honeydews are a little more expensive this week coming from both Mexico and California. No changes expected for another 2-3 weeks. Also available are Hami Melons; these are a very popular Melon due to their sweet and crisp flesh. Kiwi We will continue with Chilean Kiwi with availability on both Green and Gold fruit. New Zealand "Zespri" Kiwi is available now. Prices are high but these are the crème de la crème of Kiwifruit. Vegetables Broccoli Supplies are good out of California; no changes in price expected for next week. Local product is expected around midJuly, weather depending. Cauliflower Supplies are good out of California; no changes expected for next week. Local product should be available around midJuly, weather depending. Celery The market has started to come off very rapidly with Salinas starting up. Zucchini Ontario Zucchini will be available starting this week in moderate supply. Mexico is finishing up but we can expect this market to come off as local ramps up. Corn BBQ season is upon us and we are seeing good supplies. We continue with Georgia crop this week. The quality is excellent and pricing is extremely promotable, ask your sales person! Eggplant Georgia has started production and supplies are very good. Ask your sales rep for promotional opportunities for next week! Asparagus Local Asparagus will continue this week. Supplies are steady with no changes expected. Beans No changes this week with steady supplies. Hot House Peppers Promotional opportunities are available on Yellow, Red and Orange Peppers from Ontario. Ask us for ad opportunities! We can also make special packs to suit your needs! Seedless Cucumbers The market has strengthened this week but we don't expect it to last long. Lettuce Iceberg Lettuce California Lettuce is fairly cheap and the market is steady. Our first shot of Quebec Lettuce is expected for next week. A great item to kick off local promotions! Romaine & Romaine Hearts California Romaine is fairly cheap, while Hearts are slightly stronger. Look for local Lettuce to start this week with the full line up available by the end of the week. Red & Green Leaf Lettuce Quebec product is available now. Promote! Tomatoes Hot House & Cluster Tomatoes No changes this week with steady supplies on both Hot House and Cluster Tomatoes out of Ontario. We have fresh arrivals daily from our local grower partners in Leamington, ON. Ask your sales person for ad pricing. Field Tomatoes Field Tomatoes have come off in price. Look for both California and North Carolina product to start over the next couple of weeks. 3 Roma Tomatoes California Romas are available now. The market has come off and there are ad opportunities available, ask your sales person for details. Grape/Cherry Tomatoes Grape Tomatoes are very short this week and pricing is up as Mexico is done and Ontario Field Grape Tomatoes are still about a month away. Onions, Carrots, Potatoes Cooking Onions The local deal is coming to an end and volumes are getting smaller and smaller as the end of the season approaches. We will continue with 50lb Cooking Onions out of the US next week. Green Onions Green Onions will be available starting this week out of Quebec. The price looks average for this time of year. Spanish Onions We are getting New Crop Spanish and Red Onions out of California this week, Jumbo and Colossal . Red Onions We have new crop of jumbo red onions from California. The price will be steady. Vidalia Onions A BBQ staple! Sweet Vidalia Onions are available now from Georgia. The quality is excellent and pricing is very attractive; promote! Carrots The market price is expected to increase slightly next week as the crop out of Georgia begins to wind down. We do have very good availability on Jumbo Carrots out of both Mexico and Israel. The quality is very good on these and the pricing is promotable; ask your sales person for opportunities. Potatoes The season out of PEI is coming to an end and we will only have Russets in 10x5lb poly bags available for next week. We have transitioned to California Ruby Red, Avalanche White and Yellow Potatoes. The quality is excellent on these; promote!
