1 Humboldt Orientation Program
Welcome to Humboldt
Getting started with Humboldt Orientation Program’s (HOP)
Student Orientation, Advising and Registration for all new
students:
We are very pleased to welcome you to the Humboldt State community. We want
to provide you with a strong start and the foundation for a successful experience at
Humboldt State that will ultimately allow us to cheer for you at graduation as you
walk across the stage!
The mandatory Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration sessions (HOP for
short) allow you to receive advising and register for your first semester classes. All of
our HOP sessions are designed to communicate what it means to be a member of
the Humboldt State community consistent with the University’s mission to maintain
academic excellence, prepare students to be socially responsible members of diverse
societies, and to use their education to make a positive difference.
Each HOP session will:
• Provide you with academic and major advising
• Provide assistance with schedule planning and registration for fall classes
• Provide social programs and share social opportunities and expectations
• Acquaint you with the Humboldt State campus and surrounding community
• Inform you about degree requirements, course offerings, and academic
support services
• Create connections with faculty, staff, administrators, and current students
• Provide a comprehensive orientation for families and guests of new students
Peer Groups (peer advising) are the heart of Humboldt’s HOP sessions. Much of the
experience is built around a series of peer group meetings. Current students complete
extensive training to serve as peer counselors. We look forward to meeting you this
summer!

Which Session is Right For You?
June & July Session Information
• The summer sessions are smaller than the August session thus offering more time for
personal attention and one-on-one assistance.
• These sessions are the first opportunity new students have to register for fall classes,
providing a wider selection of available classes.
• You and your guests can stay in the residence halls during the summer sessions which
provides a great way to meet other new students and families, and make friends before
school starts.
• You can take care of university related business right away (talk with financial aid, look for
a job, etc.) and return in August relaxed and ready to go.
August Session Information
• It is more convenient to make just one trip to Arcata. In August you can move directly into
your residence hall room (if you will be living on campus) or your off-campus housing for
the year, and complete your HOP session the week before you begin classes.
• There is social programming the weekend before classes to help you get involved.
• Most campus offices are open and ready to help you get off to a strong start.
BOOK OF THE YEAR
Each year HSU and the College of the
Redwoods select a Book of the Year. All
students, staff, and faculty are encouraged
to read this year’s selection, Kite Runner,
and participate in some of the activities
organized around the book during the
Fall Semester 2007.

schedule of classes. Students who register for classes during the June session receive an email
bill in early July. Students who register for classes during the July and August sessions receive
an email bill within 24 hours of registering. Email bills are sent to a student’s preferred email
address and reflect the balance due and the payment due date.
Humboldt is Affordable

The June and July family and guest programs offer families and guests the option of staying
in the residence halls. The August family and guest program does NOT offer the option of
on-campus housing for families and guests, since students will be moving into the residence
halls that week. You will have the opportunity to talk to academic deans, faculty members,
administrators, and current students. The Student Affairs staff will lead discussions regarding the issues students face, including academics, housing, and campus involvement. We
strongly encourage families and guests who have not spent any significant time on campus to
attend the June or July sessions. During the session families and guests will attend receptions,
program fairs and presentations to meet HSU representatives from all over campus and have
plenty of time to connect with other Humboldt State families.
The HSU Bookstore is pleased to provide families and guests with a Family and Guest
Lounge, giving them a quiet place to relax and visit with other guests during the sessions. The
Family and Guest Lounge features Internet and email access, newspapers, magazines, games,
refreshments and more.
HOP Fees for Family & Guests
Three Day June and July Sessions: $50 or Two Day August Session: $40
This does not include housing. Complete housing and meal options are listed on page 7 and
8.There will be an additional $10 late fee for reservations received after the deadlines listed
on the reservation form.

Parents Stay Connected
All family members and friends are invited to join the Parent List Serve. Go to the website
listed below and click on “Join Parent Listserve.” In addition to being able to communicate
with other HSU parents, you will receive periodic updates from the University. It’s a great
way to stay connected to the campus community, no matter where you are! Family and
friends who do not attend an orientation session may choose to receive a parent folder by
mail. Call (707) 826-3504 to speak with someone about this service.

Health Information
Your student fees cover most of the services which are available on weekdays throughout the
fall and spring semesters. Our affordable and accessible professional services are provided to
support your success at Humboldt State University. More details are available on the HSU

Required Information
1. Immunizations: all students are required to comply with California State Law and CSU
policies regarding personal vaccination for Measles, Rubella, Hepatitis B, and Meningococcal Meningitis. Students who do not comply will not be permitted to register for a second
semester.
2. Health Center Registration and Consent form: find this on the web site listed above. If
you are under 18 your parent/guardian needs to sign the consent form before you can receive
services at the Student Health Center.
ITEPP (Indian Teacher Educational
Personal Program) promotes Indian
self-determination by developing
learning communities that validate
Tribal cultural values, facilitate
academic success, and foster a sense of
self-efficacy. ITEPP students receive
specialized academic advising, professional and peer mentoring, technology
support, and timely information about
financial aid and scholarships.
http://www.humboldt.edu/~hsuitepp
or call (707) 826-3672.
Immunizations
Measles/Rubella: All new and readmitted students born after January 1, 1957 must provide
proof of immunity to measles and rubella. This means two doses of vaccine after age one.
Hepatitis B: Students under 19 years of age at the start of classes must show proof of having
received all 3 doses of Hepatitis B vaccine.
Meningococcal Meningitis: Although this vaccine is not required, it is highly recommended
for freshmen, especially those living in residence halls or with a group of students.
Detailed instructions and forms regarding required immunizations and registration are available at the Student Health Center website. The Student Health Center is available to provide
immunizations.
Health Insurance
It is strongly recommended that all students have supplemental health insurance to cover the
costs of unexpected injury and illness. The mandatory Student Health Fee supports direct
care services at the Student Health Center. It does not cover the cost of visits to outside
physicians and hospitals. If you do have health insurance, review your plan and/or call your
carrier and make sure you understand the benefits, conditions and limitations of your plan.
The Learning Center offers a comprehensive program of services to support
the academic needs of HSU students.
At the Learning Center, students can
get help with difficult courses, study
skills, standardized test preparation,
reading, math, and writing skills. You
can study with a tutor, meet individually with a lab assistant to help keep
on track, and use interactive software
programs that strengthen academic and
learning skills.
If you don’t have adequate health insurance, a plan designed for students is available through
the Associated Students Business Office, (707) 826-3771. Visit the website listed below and
go to “Student Resources” and click on “Sickness & Injury Plan.”

Placement Testing
What are the EPT and ELM?
The HSU Career Center helps students plan careers, find employment,
and secure career-related experiences.
The center helps students find parttime, summer, temporary, work-study
or full-time work. Career Counselors
assist students in defining their career
goals and planning strategies to meet
those goals. The center is located in
Nelson Hall West 130.
Call (707) 826-3341 or visit
http://www.humboldt.edu/~career.
The California State University (CSU) system requires new students to take the CSU
English Placement Test (EPT) and Entry Level Math exam (ELM) before registering for
classes unless they are exempt (see below). These are placement tests designed to determine
your level of preparation for college work in Math and English. You cannot register for ANY
classes at HSU unless you have completed the EPT/ELM or you are exempt.
You cannot retake the EPT (ever) and you can retake the ELM only after a certain time
period when a new version has been created.
Do You Need to Take the EPT/ELM?
You cannot register for any classes until we have your EPT/ELM scores or verify that you
are exempt. Students who are required to take the test(s) will be informed in their admission
letters and will receive a brochure titled “EPT/ELM 2007: Essential Information.” If you
have not received the information or have questions about your test status, please call the Office of Admissions at: (707) 826-4402 or (866) 850-9556 (toll free). It is your responsibility
to provide your official SAT or ACT scores to the Office of Admissions prior to attending
Orientation. Advanced Placement (AP) exam scores taken in 2007 do not arrive until mid
July.
You may be exempt from taking these tests if:
The Indian Natural Resource, Science

The HSU Math Placement Test (MPT) is a supplementary placement exam for people who
wish to bypass Pre-Calculus (HSU’s Math 115) and enroll in Calculus instead. The test
is appropriate for a small population of students, who after taking and passing the test will
receive a higher math code, enabling them to go directly into Calculus. You might consider
reviewing the sample test on the website at www.humboldt.edu/~mathdept.
The HSU Math Placement Test is given on a walk-in basis, and will be offered during each
HOP session. The test will take place in the Testing Center, House 71. We strongly recommend that you attend the MPT review session offered during the HOP session. The exam
will be the following morning.

Degree Audit Report for
Students (DARS)
If you have Advanced Placement credit or any college or university credit, you will receive a
Degree Audit Report for Students (DARS) when you arrive. Your DARS tells you and your
advisor how the course work you completed prior to coming to Humboldt will apply to HSU’s
graduation requirements. Courses taken Spring/Summer 2007 may not be on your audit report yet. Your report will be updated when we receive and evaluate your final transcripts. If you
do not sign up for HOP by the deadline or your transcripts arrive after this date, we cannot
guarantee you a DARS in time for advising and registration.
The Academic Information and
Referral (AIR) Center is here to help
students navigate policies and procedures at HSU. If you have questions
about your transfer credit, registration or other policies and procedures,
your Degree Audit Report (DARS)
or other policies, the AIR Center is
the place to go. If we don’t have the
answer, we will help you find it.

Learn with Others who Share your Interests
For students beginning their first or second semester of college, one of the best ways to
transition is to join a FIG. What’s a FIG? It’s short for Freshman Interest Group – and it’s
essentially a group of students (about 25) who take three to five thematically-linked classes
during the Fall semester. Are you interested in politics, the arts, marine sciences, the outdoors, psychology, business… ? There are 25 different FIG themes to choose from. Two out
of every three freshmen join FIGs – there’s a good reason for that. Students who join FIGs
tend to get better grades, have more fun during their first semester at college, and arrive at
orientation with a partial class schedule in hand.
To see all the benefits of joining a FIG and to see more complete descriptions of each FIG,
go online to the website listed below. You can sign up online or complete and return the
enclosed reservation form. Either way, remember that it’s first-come, first-served, so respond
early! Some FIGs for 2007 include:
• Business and Enterprise Economy
• Elementary Education
• Exploring the Human Dimensions of Natural Resources
• Exploring Humboldt, Majors & Careers
• Exploring the Marine Environment
• Exploring the Mind
• Honors FIG Seminar
• HOWL – Humboldt Outdoor Wilderness Leadership
• Intro to Environmental Science and Engineering
• Intro to Human Performance
• Journalism and Mass Communications
• Leadership, Activism & Social Justice
• Life Science and the Environment
• Math Confidence
• Off the Beaten Path: Exploring Humboldt through Literature and Landscapes
• People and Politics
• People, Community and Social Change
• Shake, Rattle, and Roll: Organizing Communities for Disaster
• Science Foundations
• Teaching Secondary Education Math & Science
• Women for Change

“I came to HSU unsure about what I
wanted to study. The Science Foundations FIG really helped me decide what
I want to do with my life.
It was hands-on experience all semester
long, including hikes to the forest and
the Arcata Marsh.
I highly recommend joining a FIG.”
