B. Event rules and mountain bike etiquette
1. Fallen riders
First contact – If you come across someone that has fallen you should ask them if they require
assistance. If required, please stop and render any assistance that you are capable of providing.
Depending on the severity of the situation, a second and third contact role may be needed.
Second contact – The second rider to come across the fallen rider should stop and make
oncoming riders aware of the situation. The first and second contact rider should remain at the
scene as long as necessary.
Third contact – The third person to come across the injured rider should proceed to the next
available communication point to enable a message to be given to the first aid official.
Injured riders can re-enter the course once the first aid official has assessed their injury and
approved them to resume the race.
The event organisers will endeavour to adjust the times/laps of people who provide assistance to
fallen riders.
If an injured rider wishes to re-enter the course, it is up to the race official to decide if the lap is
counted.
2. Rider attire
All riders must wear an Australian Standards (AS/NZS 2063) approved bicycle helmet that is in
good working order and well maintained.
No headphones/earphones to be worn.
Attire should be suitable for mountain biking, no loose or long clothing.

3. Bike requirements
The bike must be suitable for a cross-country mountain bike event. There are no steep descents
on the track. Bikes must have 2 working brakes and suitable tyres for an off-road event. The
handlebar ends must be plugged. Riders must ensure their tyres’ pressures are suitable for the
terrain, which is rocky in sections.
4. The start
The start line is on Gun Club Rd, adjacent to the start of the Twisties trail. Riders are required to
line up in rows of 6. Once started, riders have two hundred metres of wide, inclined, gravel road,
followed by four hundred metres of wide, flat, gravel road before entering the single trails.
Seniors will be started first, followed 2 minutes later by the middle division and finally 2 minutes
later by the junior competitors.
5. The course
Competitors should follow the designated course. Riders seen shortcutting will be penalised.
When approaching the finish line, competitors are asked to leave some space between the rider in
front so that their number plate is clearly visible to the lap recorders.
6. Passing
a.
The start of the race has several hundred metres of wide track. It is designed to allow
the pack to spread out to enable them to enter into the tighter trails in single file.
b.
There may be instances in the first single trail where competitors get held up by other
riders in front. Please exercise patience as the field sorts itself out. The first hill is
approximately 500 metres into the course and has ample room for overtaking.
c.
For the remainder of the event, a rider approaching another rider from the rear should
signal to the rider ahead that they wish to pass by saying something like, “Rider behind
please” or “When you are ready please”. The rider being passed should respond with,
“Ok, just a moment” or “Ok, go past on the right” and move over (preferably to the left),
when it is safe to do so, in order to let the other rider pass.
7. Feed zone
The area 200 metres to 100 metres before the finish line provides a suitable location for a feed
zone. If a rider chooses to take on provisions or drop items while riding, they should do so in a safe
manner. The rider should move to the left of the course and coordinate with their support crew
when doing so. No items should remain on the ground after the rider has passed through the feed
zone. If dropping items that could be an obstacle, eg. drink bottles, riders are asked to gently throw
it off to the left side of the track for collection by their support crew.

Page 5
8. Bike failures
If an issue arises with the bike on the course and the rider is not able to fix it at that location, they
may proceed to the tech zone by pushing their bike. If the rider follows the course, then after the
bike has been fixed, the rider may re-enter the course and have that lap recorded.
If the rider cuts part of the course due to bike failures, completion of a lap is not recorded.
9. Tech zone
The area 100 metres to 10 metres before the finish line provides a suitable location for a tech zone.
If a rider needs to attend to issues, they should pull to the left of the course in a safe manner.
Bike/rider issues may be dealt with by the rider or support crew.
10. Duration
In the event of special circumstances, such as inclement weather, the event organisers may
conclude and award championship placings once two thirds of the allocated time has passed.
Before this time, the event may simply be concluded without the championship placings being
awarded.
11. Team race
All teams may be a combination of boys or girls except for the girls only division. All team
members must complete at least 1 lap. Riders may complete 2 or more consecutive laps if they
wish to do so.
Rider swap over is done in the tech zone. When a rider intends on swapping over they should
move to the left of the course and, in a safe manner, make some form of contact between the
riders or bikes. If contact is not made, then a penalty may be imposed on the team. The penalty
will be in proportion to the size of the impact the change-over has on the race.
