XANIMAL HEALTH RECORDS
Any animal that is to be shown at the 2007 Dixie National Junior Round-Up must have a completed health
record listing all medications and treatments received within 60 days prior to the show. The completed health
record on all market animals, commercial beef heifers, and commercial dairy heifers will be turned in to
show management at weigh-in of the animals. Completed health records on beef breeding cattle and
purebred dairy cattle will be turned in to show management at the check-in of registration papers.
XREMINDER – 2007 DISTRICT AND JUNIOR ROUND-UP SHOWS!!
◆PURCHASING PROJECT ANIMALS FOR SPRING SHOWS
Spring shows will be here soon. Now is a good time to run a final survey of your 4-H’ers to determine
if additional purchases are needed, and be locating them. The only ownership deadlines that have passed
are for commercial beef heifers, steers, lambs and market goats. You still have until December 1st to
purchase your hogs, beef breeding, dairy cattle and dairy goats. Ownership deadlines on project animals
for spring shows are:

◆CATTLE REGISTRATION PAPERS FOR JUNIOR SHOWS
Double check registration papers on breeding beef and purebred dairy to be sure they are in proper
order. Now is the time to correct any problems. Remember that papers must be in the 4-H’ers name only.
Farm names or joint ownership with adults are not acceptable. DON’T ASSUME THAT EVERYTHING IS
RIGHT – CHECK!! Papers may be in multiple siblings’ names provided they are all 18 years of age or
younger.
◆ENTRIES FOR DISTRICT & ROUND-UP SHOWS
Now is the time to be getting your entries in order. All hog, beef breeding, dairy cattle and dairy goat
entries must be submitted through the Extension Intranet website as was done for State Fair. Nomination
forms are also due in the ADS Office (not post-marked) on Monday, December 11, 2006.
◆STEERS, COMMERCIAL BEEF HEIFERS, COMMERCIAL DAIRY HEIFERS, AND MARKET GOATS
Double check with your 4-H’ers who are exhibiting steers, commercial beef heifers, commercial dairy
heifers, and market goats about horns. All commercial beef heifers, steers and market goats showing at the
District and Round-Up Shows must be polled or dehorned, with no scurs or regrowth to exceed 1½ inches
above the skin. All commercial dairy heifers must be dehorned. Too often with a poor job of dehorning,
regrowth may occur. Now is the time to take off the horns or any regrowth to allow for proper healing.
Registered heifers are not eligible for the commercial heifer shows.
◆HOGS SHOWING AT 2007 DISTRICT AND ROUND-UP SHOWS
All market hogs for the 2007 District and Round-Up Shows must be nominated and ear tagged within
11 days after ownership deadline. Below are the deadlines for market hogs:
December 1, 2006
December 11, 2006
- Market hog ownership deadline for 2007 District & Round-Up Shows
- Market hog entry/nomination due for 2007 District & Round-Up Shows
Nomination Process for Hogs- What you must submit for each hog nominated:
1. Mail individual nomination form for each hog to ADS Department. Each nomination form must be
completed (PO Box address is not acceptable for physical location of an animal) and signed by the
exhibitor, parent, and supervising Extension Agent or Vo-Ag Advisor.
2. Official ear tag number – each hog must be tagged with official ear tag for 2007 prior to
nomination deadline.
3. Submit county entries through the Extension Intranet website (available November 1, 2006).
4. Keep a hard copy of your entries for your files.
3
Please let hog exhibitors know about these dates and double check with them to be sure your records
are in order and that all market hogs are properly entered. Do not send us nomination forms after deadline
date. Please do not wait until the last day to take care of this business.
Order form for hog tags and nomination forms for hogs were sent to you earlier. If you failed to get
this material, please call my office. County Extension Agents or Vo-Ag Advisors must make nominations of
hogs under their supervision.
All hogs must be ear tagged (by December 11th) and nomination forms must be (duplicate forms as
needed) returned to the MSU Animal and Dairy Sciences Department by December 11, 2006.
Each hog must have an individually completed nomination form including breed information and
signature of the exhibitor, parent, and Extension Agent/Vo-Ag Advisor.
◆EXHIBITOR’S AGE FOR DISTRICT LIVESTOCK SHOWS & DIXIE NATIONAL JUNIOR ROUND-UP
Remember that exhibitor’s age will be 8 –18 years of age as of December 31, 2006.
Agents/Advisors have the responsibility to see that all exhibitors are of the proper age.
▶LIVESTOCK ETHICS CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
All 4-H and FFA exhibitors (in addition to at least one parent and all volunteers who plan to assist) that plan to
exhibit animals at the 2007 District Livestock Shows and Dixie National Junior Round-Up must have completed the
Livestock Ethics Certification Program. All Extension Agents and Vo-Ag Advisors that plan to teach the Livestock
Ethics Certification Program must also be certified. Any NEW exhibitors, parent and volunteer will need to be certified
by the old Ethics program and added to your current list. E-mail new list to John Giesemann, if you have any
changes. Those exhibitors that have completed the Ethics Certification Program previously, will not have
to be re-certified prior to the Dixie National Junior Round-Up. It is anticipated that a new Ethics Certification
Program will be available in the summer of 2007.
▶2006 MISSISSIPPI STATE FAIR RESULTS
The 2006 Mississippi State Fair junior livestock shows were outstanding. Participation was up in some species
and down in others. However, overall we had an increase over the last two years.
The State Fair was again an excellent event and a “showcase” for the junior livestock program in Mississippi.
Agents, leaders, parents, and exhibitors are to be commended on their fine cooperation and dedicated work put into
this event to make it successful. Congratulations! Look at the figures below to see the number of State Fair Livestock
exhibits in recent years.

5 DEAN’S CORNER
5 4-H Livestock Project Ideas
During and after the 2006 Mississippi State Fair, several 4-H leaders approached me with ideas and suggestions on
how to improve various 4-H Livestock Projects, and some even had ideas for new programs. If you have ideas and/or
suggestions about 4-H Livestock Projects in your area, please email them to me or give me a call. I believe that there
is an excellent group of 4-H agents throughout the state of Mississippi with fresh ideas in addition to those that I have,
and together we can continue to make a difference in the lives of Mississippi 4-H’ers.
5 4-H Agent and Volunteer Training
The success of the Mississippi 4-H Livestock Program depends in large part on the support of 4-H agents, parents, and
volunteers. We are always looking to involve new 4-H agents and volunteers in the Mississippi 4-H Livestock
Programs, even if that individual does not have a strong background in livestock. My goal is to develop in-service
training next year that can help to educate individuals who desire to work with youth in the 4-H Livestock Program. If
you have new agents or volunteers that are willing to help during the Mississippi State Fair, Dixie National Junior
Round-Up, State 4-H Horse Show, or other events during the year, please have them contact me.
5 Volunteer Recognition
As mentioned earlier, volunteer support is critical to the success of the 4-H Livestock Program. Many of these
individuals are recognized throughout the year and at year-end County 4-H Banquets. I want to recognize these
volunteers in the 4-H Animal Lines Newsletter as well. If you have outstanding volunteers that are deserving of being
recognized for their efforts, write a short description of the service provided by these individuals and send a picture of
them (if available) to me. In each Newsletter, I will add a section to recognize these outstanding volunteers.
5 Story Time
4-H Livestock Programs are fun and exciting for exhibitors, and I want to start another section in the 4-H Animal Lines
Newsletter where 4-H’ers can write about their experiences with their livestock projects and what participating in the
4-H Livestock Program has meant to them. Being a former 4-H’er myself, I remember countless experiences that I
had showing cattle and chickens, competing in Public Speaking and Team Demonstration contests, judging livestock,
and keeping record books. This section is designed to publicize what the 4-H Livestock Program has meant to 4-H’ers
and can serve as a promotional activity for the 4-H Livestock Program too. These stories can be mailed or emailed to
me, and please have the 4-H’er include their name, county, livestock project, and a short description of their
experiences.
Sincerely yours,
Dean Jousan, Ph.D.
