TRAINEE AND INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS IN USA
1. Program Purpose:
 Create cultural and professional learning opportunities between citizens of the United
States and citizens of other countries.

Facilitate opportunities for:
- Professional Development
- Enhance the skills and expertise of exchange visitors in their academic or
occupation fields.
- English language development, and
- A greater understanding of American society and culture

Expose American businesses and individuals to the participants’ expertise and their
traditions and culture.
2. Rules and Regulations: J1 Trainee or Intern. ( They will be training at the host
company)
1) Internship:


Who are currently enrolled in and pursuing studies at a foreign degree- or certificategranting post-secondary academic institution outside the U.S.; or
Who have graduated from such an institution no more than 12 months prior to their
exchange visitor program start date.
Note: Internship Programs are limited to 12 months in duration.
2) Trainees:


Who have a degree or professional certificate from a foreign post-secondary academic
institution and at least one year of prior related work experience in their occupational
field outside the U.S., or
Who have at least five years working experience outside the U.S. in the occupational
field in which they are seeking training.
Note: Trainee Programs are limited to 18 months in duration. Training programs in
culinary, tourism, hospitality, agriculture, forestry, and fishing categories are limited to
12 months in duration.
3. Occupational categories:










Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing;
Arts and Culture
Construction and Building Trades;
Education, Social Sciences, Library Science, Counseling and Social Services.
Health Related Occupations;
Hospitality and Tourism;
Information Media and Communications;
Management, Business, Commerce and Finance
Public Administration and Law; and
The Sciences, Engineering, Architecture, Mathematics and Industrial Occupations.

Proof of Education
- Intern: Proof of current enrolment or proof of graduation within the last year.
- Trainee: Proof of graduation
Proof of Funds. Must show name of account holder, date of current balance, and a
minimum balance of the equivalent of $ 2000 USD.
- You can use a parent/guardian as your funding for your program.
- If your internship /training is unpaid, you must show an additional ( minimum)
$ 1000, USD per month on program.
Proof of Work Experience ( TRAINEE ONLY ) A letter in company letterhead from
your previous employer(s) stating the dates you worked at this company, and your
duties. Must be signed.
- If you have a degree, you only need to show 1 year of relevant work experience.
- If you do not have a degree, please provide at least 5 years of relevant work
experience.
