Cardiac Keydets
Sandridge On A Tear In Conference
This season, VMI has had no issues with
waiting until the last minute to claim victories.
The Keydets have claimed six wins this season in their final at bat. Even more impressively,
five of those have come in conference play, where
the team has claimed 11 wins in all.
The first such win came on the second weekend of the season, when VMI put up three runs in
the bottom of the eighth to claim a 9-7 lead, then
held on for a win over Binghamton in the second
game of a doubleheader.
On the Big South’s opening weekend, a threerun home run by Jordan Ballard brought VMI from
behind on their way to a 5-3 win at High Point.
The Keydets have claimed three extra-inning wins
in league play, with two coming against Radford
and another against Liberty.
The biggest of all came against #15 Coastal
Carolina, when Shane Geisslinger’s chopper into
left field plated Justin Hess to give the Keydets
their first win over a ranked opponent this season.
VMI has lost only one game this year in its
opponents’ final at bat, falling 4-3 against
Binghamton in the first game of the previously
mentioned doubleheader.
The Keydets have now won five games when
they were trailing or tied entering the ninth.
Conversely, VMI has not yet lost a game that they
were leading or tied entering the ninth.
Redshirt-sophomore Brian Sandridge has
been on a tear in conference play, as the outfielder currently tops several Big South charts in conference play.
Sandridge leads the Big South in Conference
play with 30 hits and ranks third with 4 home
runs (tied) and 46 total bases. He also ranks fifth
with 14 RBIs (tied), sixth with a .390 batting
average and tenth with a .597 slugging percentage.
He saw his career-best 14-game hitting
streak snapped in game one against #15 Coastal,
during which he was 28-for-68 (.412) with four
doubles, two home runs, 14 RBIs and nine runs
scored.

VMI Off to Hot Start In Conference
Thanks to a pair of sweeps and a road series
win over the Big South’s first six weekends of play,
VMI is second in the league standings with an 117 mark.
The start matches VMI’s best-ever record
through 18 conference games, equaling the mark
produced in 1988. That season, first-year coach
Paul Maini led VMI to an 11-7 mark and a SoCon
North Division Championship.
VMI has also equaled its most conference
wins since joining the Big South, matching the
11-13 mark from 2005.
Only the the 1999 (13-16) and 2003 (1614) VMI teams have posted more wins in conference play than this year’s total of 11.

Bullpen Comes Up Big
When Matching Opponent in Hits . . . . . .1-4
While VMI’s weekend rotation received many
of the headlines in the preseason, the team’s
bullpen has come up big as of late.
In the past 21 games, the VMI bullpen has
gone 6-1 with four saves in 48 total appearances,
posting an ERA of 2.50 with opponents hitting
only .187.
In conference play this season, the bullpen
has been impressive as well, going 5-0 with four
saves and a 2.86 ERA in 33 total appearances.
Opponents are hitting only .218 off of Keydet
relievers, who have struck out 49 batters and
walked only 20 in 56.2 innings.

Henderson Racks Up Strikeouts
Junior hurler Chris Henderson, despite posting impressive numbers, was never considered a
strikeout pitcher in his first two years at VMI,
striking out 79 batters in 111 innings.
That belief has been shattered this season, as
Henderson currently ranks sixth in the Big South
with 57 strikeouts in 57 innings, thanks in large
part to back-to-back double-digit strikeout games
in conference play.
In his first league appearance, Henderson
struck out ten against High Point in seven innings
before striking out 11 against Winthrop in eight
innings. He did not walk a batter in either appearance, and ranks second in the the Big South by
issuing only five walks all year.
The right-hander currently ranks atop the
Keydet career recordbook by issuing only 1.71
walks per nine innings in his career. In his twoplus years with the Keydets, Henderson now has
136 strikeouts and 32 walks in 168 innings.
Keydets Top League Pitching Charts
Midway through the season, the VMI pitching
staff currently tops the Big South ledger in several
categories.
The Keydets currently have the fewest walks
(120) in the Big South, while ranking second with
the most strikeouts (349) in the League.
Additionally, the Keydets lead the Big South
and rank seventh nationlly with only 2.69 walks
per nine innings, while also leading the league
with a 2.91 strikeout-to-walk ratio. VMI also ranks
second with 7.83 strikeouts per nine innings and
a 1.33 WHIP (Walks + Hits per Inning Pitched).
Sixteen Innings In Sixteen Lines
(Part Two)
VMI improved to 2-0 in 16-inning conference
games by outlasting Liberty 6-5 on Saturday, April
19 at Worthington Stadium.
The Keydets knotted the game at four in the
ninth, when Brian Sandridge scored Thane Smith.
Travis Smink blanked the Flames for sevenplus innings, until the 15th.
The Keydets had taken a 5-4 lead on Mike

Duty retired the Flames in order to secure the win.
Mike Roberts plated four of the six Keydet runs,

Sixteen Innings In Sixteen Lines
(Part One)
In what is believed to be the longest game in
the modern era of both teams, VMI defeated Radford
3-2 in 16 innings on Monday, April 7.
VMI left a season-high 21 men on base in the
game that was mercifully ended when Justin
Topping, the 32nd player to play in the game, plated
Brian Sandridge with a sacrifice fly.
Keydet reliever Travis Smink earned the win by
no-hitting RU for the final six innings, while the
Keydets stranded ten in extras alone.
Sandridge set a school record for at bats while
going 4-for-8, and his three doubles tied a school
mark in the 4-hour, 32-minute affair.
In the VMI annals, a 16-inning game was
played in 1929, as VMI Hall of Famer Lefty Williams
took a complete-game, 1-0 loss versus Virginia Tech.

Ballard Bashes
Over a four-game stretch in mid-March,
sophomore first baseman Jordan Ballard went on
a tear, hitting four home runs against High Point,
William & Mary and James Madison.
Ballard went 4-for-14 during the stretch, hitting a three-run shot in the top of the ninth
inning of the first game of a doubleheader at High
Point (3/22), to bring the Keydets from behind on
their way to a 5-3 win.
Ballard hit a solo home run in the second
inning against William & Mary (3/25) before hitting solo shots in both the fifth and ninth innings
at JMU (3/26).
The Troy, Va. native now leads the team with
nine doubles and nine home runs and ranks second with 78 total bases and a .506 slugging percentage.

Biagini Still Rolling Along
Sophomore Tanner Biagini’s bat has not
cooled much from the torrid pace he set to open
the 2008 season.
Biagini has now reached base safely in 25 of
the past 28 games. He currently leads the team
with a .345 batting average, 61 hits, 38 RBIs, 90
total bases and a .508 slugging percentage.
Additionally, Biagini is also tied for third in
the Big South with 61 hits, seventh with 38 RBIs
and ninth with 90 total bases.
Earlier this season, Biagini had a career-best
5-for-5 outing in game two against High Point,
the most hits by a Keydet in a game since Mike
Roberts went 5-for-6 against Radford on May 12,
2007.
He also hit his first career grand slam while
driving in a career-best five in a 13-4 win over
Coppin State.
Geisslinger Muscles Up
Entering his senior season at VMI, second
baseman Shane Geisslinger had six career extrabase hits, all doubles, in 112 career contests.
This season, Geisslinger has eight doubles
and his first career triple, already surpassing his
previous career total of extra-base hits.
On opening weekend, Geisslinger collected
doubles in each of the weekend’s three contests.
Additionally, Geisslinger established a new careerhigh with four RBI in the season-opener, besting
his previous high of three from his freshman season against Richmond.
Geisslinger currently tops the Keydet ledger
with his 33 runs scored, 15 stolen bases (in 17
attempts) and 16 multiple-hit games. He also
ranks second in the Big South in stolen bases.
Chris Does His Duty
Sophomore Chris Duty certainly lived up to
his surname in early April, working in relief in six
consecutive games over a nine-day span as the
Keydets went 5-1.
Duty began the run by throwing an inning in
the Sunday game against Winthrop (3/30). He

stretch.
Keydets Pick Up Second Big South
Sweep
It took an extra day and nine extra innings,
but VMI claimed their second Big South sweep of
the year by taking care of Radford in a threegame set at Gray-Minor Stadium in early April.
After postponing the Friday game, the teams
met in game one on Saturday, when nine innings
weren’t enough to wrap things up. Mother
nature intervened at the end of nine, and the
game was finished on Sunday afternoon. VMI
took a 4-3 win when Brian Sandridge hit his first
career walk-off home run, a three-run shot in the
bottom of the 11th after RU’s Alex Gregory gave
the Highlanders the lead with his two-run bomb
in the top-half.
The regularly-scheduled Sunday game was a
pedestrian 9-5 VMI win, before the teams played
on Monday evening to make up Friday’s postponement.
And play they would. Thirty-two players
saw action in a 16-inning marathon, believed to
be the longest game in the modern era for both
programs. Justin Topping plated Brian Sandridge
with the winning run on a sacrifice fly, ending
the marathon after four hours and 32 minutes.
The home sweep of a conference opponent
is VMI’s first since sweeping High Point on May
13-15, 2005.
It also marks the first time since joining the
Big South that VMI has swept two conference
teams in the same season, after sweeping High
Point on the road in mid-March.

Keydet Hurlers Go The Distance
The Keydet weekend rotation, consisting of
Trey Barham, Michael Bowman and Chris
Henderson, have each shown they have the ability to pitch deep into ballgames, as each of the
three have already thrown complete games a
month into the season.
Of note, each complete game has seen the
Keydet hurler allow only one earned run.
Barham’s CG came in the conference opener
against High Point (3/21), as he took the win in
a 5-4, come-from-behind victory. Bowman took
the loss in his CG, a 5-1 loss to Marshall (3/15),
while Henderson shut down Central Connecticut
State (3/2), earning the decision in a 7-2 victory.
VMI is currently tied for the Big South lead
with three complete games.

his efforts, Sandridge was named Big South
Conference Choice Hotels Player of the Week for
the period ending April 7.
Sandridge drove in runs in all four games
last week as VMI went 4-0 against four in-state
opponents. He went 3-for-4 with two doubles
and two runs scored against Richmond, and had
a 3-for-4 game with three RBIs in Sunday’s win
against the Highlanders, driving home the tying
run in the fifth inning. He also went 2-for-5 with
the walk-off home run in game one of the series
against Radford, the first walk-off win for VMI
this season.
On the week, the redshirt-sophomore outfielder was 8-for-17 (.471) with three runs
scored, eight RBI, two doubles, one home run
and two walks, in addition to a .765 slugging
percentage and .526 on-base percentage. It
marks the first time in his career that Sandridge
has earned Big South Player of the Week accolades.

nine in the first four innings, while pitching
seven innings of VMI’s first shutout of the 2008
season. Henderson walked only one batter while
scattering five hits, earning his third win of the
season. He also worked a scoreless inning of
relief in an 11-2 mid-week win against Norfolk
State, as the Keydets went 4-0 on the road over
Spring Break.
This marks the second time that Henderson
has been named Big South Pitcher of the Week.
He also earned the honor last April 9, when he
set down 15 batters in a row while pitching 7.2
innings against #3 Virginia in a 5-3 win. He followed that up four days later, when he faced the
minimum through six innings against High Point
before leaving in the seventh with a 3-2 lead.
Pitching Dominates In ConferenceOpening Sweep
Against an offense regarded as one of the
top in the Big South, the VMI pitching staff
dominated its conference-opening series against
High Point, leading the Keydets to a sweep.
VMI got phenomenal starting pitching from
Trey Barham, Michael Bowman and Chris
Henderson, with each of the three collecting
quality starts, consisting of six or more innings
pitched and less than three earned runs allowed.
Barham threw an opening day complete game,
allowing one earned run, before Bowman allowed
only three earned runs through seven innings.
Henderson followed with perhaps the best performance of his career, striking out a career-best
ten while throwing seven innings of VMI’s first
shutout of the season.
On the weekend, the Keydet starting pitchers combined to go 2-0 with a 1.57 ERA, pitching 23 of the weekend’s 27 innings. They struck
out 22 batters while walking only three as the
Panthers hit .205 against them.
In relief, the staff was equally up to the
challenge, as Jason Farley collected a win and a
save on Saturday while Travis Smink earned his
first Big South save. In three appearances,
Smink and Farley allowed two hits in four
innings, striking out four while walking one as
the Panthers hit .143 and failed to score against
the duo.
Keydets Win Opening Big South
Series For Fourth Straight Season
In an impressive run, VMI has now opened
up each of the past four conference seasons with
a series win.
In 2005, the Keydets took two of three
against UNC Asheville at home, before taking
two of three at home against Charleston
Southern in 2006. Last season, VMI swept CSU
on the road before opening up this conference
season with another road sweep, this time of
High Point.
In an interesting note, now that HPU is the
last team that VMI has swept a conference series
from on the road, they also hold the distinction
of being the last team that VMI swept at home,
doing so May 13-15 at Patchin Field in 2005.
Barham Has CLASS
Senior left-handed pitcher Trey Barham has
been listed as one of thirty candidates for the
Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, presented annually
to NCAA Division I student-athletes in eight
sports, the award focuses on the “Four C’s” of
classroom, character, community and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and
Achievement for Staying in School, the award
was launched in 2001 to honor the attributes of
college basketball seniors who fulfill their entire
athletic eligibility and pursue their degree. Since
that time, Lowe’s, an official corporate partner of
the NCAA®, has expanded the award to include
other NCAA sports including baseball.
Barham is VMI’s career leader in wins and
ranks second on VMI’s career strikeouts list. A
three-year weekend starter for the Keydets, VMI
is 28-16 in Barham’s 44 career starts.
Barham is one of two candidates listed from
the Big South Conference, joining Coastal
Carolina’s Tommy Baldridge, while he is the only
player listed from the state of Virginia.
Roberts Named to Johnny Bench
Award Watch List
Junior catcher Mike Roberts, has been
named to the watch list for the 2008 Coleman
Company-Johnny Bench Award delivered by AT&T
and Papa John's Pizza, given annually to the top
catcher in the NCAA's Division I.
Roberts (Prince George, Va./Prince George)
currently ranks second on the team with 36 RBIs
and ranks third with a .313 batting average.
A season ago, Roberts made 53 starts
behind the plate for the Keydets and set careerhighs with a .277 batting average and 13 doubles. He also ranked second in the Big South by
throwing out 22 would-be basestealers.
Roberts becomes the first Keydet to be
included on the Johnny Bench Award Watch List
in the recognition's nine-year history.
Season Opener at Home a Rarity
When VMI hosted Lafayette to start the
2008 campaign, it was no small feat. In fact, it
was the first time in 27 years that VMI opened a
season on post.
In 1981, the Keydets hosted Davis & Elkins
to begin the season, and dropped that seasonopener. Since that time, VMI did play Mary
Washington at Washington & Lee to begin the
1988 season, but have not hosted a season
opener on post.
The last time the Keydets won a season
opener on post before this year’s 7-1 victory over
the Leopards came on March 20, 1971, when
the Keydets knocked off St. Francis (N.Y.) 7-5.
Keydets Earn Preseason Praise
Coming off of a school-record 34 wins, the
Keydets earned preseason praise from several
college baseball media outlets.
The National Collegiate Baseball Writers
Association (NCBWA) included VMI in their preseason national voting, as the Keydets were listed in the receiving votes section of the poll.
Additionally, VMI was voted second (by one
point) in the Big South Conference Preseason
poll, while Baseball America and Rivals.com also
tabbed the Keydets second in their preseason
prognostications.
SEBaseball.com included VMI as the 40th
team in their Southeastern 80 roundup and
placed the Keydets third in their Big South preseason poll.
Eight In The Fold For 2009
Freshman Class
The VMI baseball program announced the
addition of eight early signees to the VMI
Baseball Class of 2012. The class includes
seven players from the state of Virginia, and
another from North Carolina.
The list includes George Piccirilli
(Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park), Jacob Morley
