UNIT PLAN Unit Plan Information Subject/Course: Health and Physical Education Grade Level: Grade 7 Topic: Basketball Teacher: Length of Unit: 7 days Length of Period: 40 mins. (X7) Unit Overview The main purpose of this unit is to provide students with the necessary skills in order for them to be able to participate in a basketball tournament at the end of the unit. Students will be taught many skills and concepts including both cognitive concepts as well as the motor skills necessary to achieve success. At the beginning of this unit students will be taught the necessary motor skills, which include dribbling, shooting and movement as well as passing. Later on in the unit students will be taught some cognitive concepts such as rules of the game, history, fouls, communication as well as offensive and defensive strategies. Also students will understand proper safety for each class. With all of these skills students will have the opportunity to fully participate in the sport of basketball and use the skills learned here to live a physical and healthy lifestyle. Curriculum Expectations Overall Expectation: A1. participate actively and regularly in a wide variety of physical activities, and demonstrate an understanding of factors that encourage lifelong participation in physical activity; A3. demonstrate responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others as they participate in physical activities. B1. perform movement skills, demonstrating an understanding of the basic requirements of the skills and applying movement concepts as appropriate, as they engage in a variety of physical activities; B2. apply movement strategies appropriately, demonstrating an understanding of the components of a variety of physical activities, in order to enhance their ability to participate successfully in those activities. Specific Expectations: B1.1 perform smooth transfers of weight and rotations, in relation to others and equipment, in a variety of situations involving static and dynamic balance B1.3 send, receive, and retain a variety of objects, while taking into account their position and motion in relation to others, equipment, and boundaries, while applying basic principles of movement B1.4 demonstrate an understanding of the phases of movement (i.e., preparation, execution, followthrough), and apply this understanding to the refinement of movement skills as they participate in a variety of physical activities UNIT PLAN B2.1 demonstrate an understanding of the components of a range of physical activities (e.g., move-ment skills, game structures, basic rules and guidelines, conventions of fair play and etiquette), and apply this understanding as they participate in a variety of physical activities in indoor and outdoor environments B2.3 apply a variety of tactical solutions to increase chances of success as they participate in physical activities Differentiation - Students who are very good at basketball will be divided into different teams to create fair teams -Students who are confident in their abilities will be called up to demonstrate basketball skills to the class -Students who are struggling with the skills of basketball will be paired up with students who excel in the game as a way of peer tutoring -Students who are in a wheel chair may still participate in drills such as passing and shooting but do not have to dribble if they are not comfortable with the skills when participating in games -More or less time can be spent on each of the drills based on how quickly or slowly the class is learning these skills - Students with hearing loss may work on passing the ball, dribbling and shooting. In games teacher may encourage the student’s teammates to work on visual signals to help the student out so they can fully participate to the best of their abilities -Students with vision loss may still work on passing the ball and shooting with the aid of another classmate Equipment / Materials - 30 basketballs -Basketball trolley - 4 basketball nets -Whiteboard -Dry erase markers -Whiteboard erasers UNIT PLAN -Scoreboard -Basketball and properly set up basketball nets are needed for each class Safety -Safety should be reviewed at the beginning of each class - Make sure basketball nets are set up properly for each lesson -Make sure students are in proper gym attire including proper gym clothes and indoor gym shoes -When balls are not being used they must be put away in the trolley or in the storage area - Make sure there is space between students doing drills so they do not run into each other -The gym should be clear of all equipment and any items removed from the gym floor so as to avoid any injuries - Students are not permitted into the gym unless the teacher is present to supervise them Activity Sequence Day 1 – Basketball Warm Up, Dribbling and moving Day 2 – Passing (overhead and bounce pass) Day 3 – Shooting (Free throws and jump shot) Day 4 – Rules of the Game, History, Fouls (in class) Day 5 – Communication with teammates, Mini game play Day 6 – Offensive and defensive strategy, Mini game play Day 7 – Tournament Day UNIT PLAN Day 1: Lesson Warm Up, Dribbling, Movement Goals/Outcomes - Practice proper dribbling form - Practice moving in different directions while dribbling Learning Activities - Warm Up (students will create their own warm up that they will do at the beginning of each class) -How to dribble including: -Dribbling with the dominant hand -Dribbling with the nondominant hand -Athletic stance while dribbling -Positions of hands, legs and upper body while dribbling Assessment & Evaluation - Participation: Ready to learn at the beginning of class in proper gym attire and a positive attitude throughout activities - Checklist: To see if students are successful in the learning skills of the day Movement while dribbling including: -Dribbling forward, backwards, left and right - Athletic stance introduction - Arm positioning, leg positioning, upper body positioning -Explanation of double dribble Success Criteria - Students will create a consistent warm up they will participate in at the beginning of each class - Students will be able to use proper form to dribble with their dominant and non-dominant hand -Students will understand an athletic stance and be able to dribble in different directions Day 2: Lesson Goals/Outcomes Passing (overhead and bounce pass) - Review dribbling from last day -Students will practice proper overhead and bounce passes - Students will practice receiving Learning Activities - Warm up (created by students) - With a partner students will review dribbling from yesterday -After this students will practice accurately passing Assessment & Evaluation - Participation and Checklist used from Day 1 Success Criteria - Student will use the athletic stance learned yesterday and accurately direct overhead and bounce passes to their partner UNIT PLAN overhead and bounce passes and receiving overhead and bounce passes -Students will also be able to receive these passes Day 3: Lesson Goals/Outcomes Learning Activities Shooting (Free throws and jump shot) -Students will review dribbling and passing -Students will practice free throw shooting as well as jump shots from various distances - Warm up (created by students) -Students will review dribbling and overhead and bounce passes -Students will practice free throws -Students will practice dribbling and shooting a jump shot -Students will practice receiving passes and shooting from various distances Lesson Goals/Outcomes Learning Activities Rules of the Game, History, Fouls - Students will learn the basic rules of basketball including fouls -Students will learn about the history of the game -Students will get into groups and brainstorm all their ideas about what they know about the rules and history of basketball -Each group will share their answers to the class -Teacher will review any concepts that have been missed with the class -Each group will then complete a quiz to check their understanding Assessment & Evaluation - Participation and Checklist used from Day 1 Success Criteria - Student will be able to apply the athletic stance learned on the first day to practice proper shooting form from various distances Day 4: Assessment & Evaluation -Observation of students behavior when they work in groups - Quiz to check students knowledge of basketball Success Criteria - Students will be able to understand the basic rules of basketball and apply these when they play in a mini game next class -Students will have a basic understanding of the history of basketball -Students will write a quiz in groups on these 2 concepts to UNIT PLAN check their knowledge .
