Subject/Course: Health and Physical Education
Grade Level: Grade 7
Topic: Basketball
Teacher:
Length of Unit: 7 days
Length of Period: 40 mins. (X7)
Unit Overview
The main purpose of this unit is to provide students with the necessary skills in order for them to be able
to participate in a basketball tournament at the end of the unit. Students will be taught many skills and
concepts including both cognitive concepts as well as the motor skills necessary to achieve success. At the
beginning of this unit students will be taught the necessary motor skills, which include dribbling, shooting
and movement as well as passing. Later on in the unit students will be taught some cognitive concepts
such as rules of the game, history, fouls, communication as well as offensive and defensive strategies.
Also students will understand proper safety for each class. With all of these skills students will have the
opportunity to fully participate in the sport of basketball and use the skills learned here to live a physical
and healthy lifestyle.
Curriculum Expectations
Overall Expectation:
A1. participate actively and regularly in a wide variety of physical activities, and demonstrate an
understanding of factors that encourage lifelong participation in physical activity;
A3. demonstrate responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others as they participate in physical
activities.
B1. perform movement skills, demonstrating an understanding of the basic requirements of the skills and
applying movement concepts as appropriate, as they engage in a variety of physical activities;
B2. apply movement strategies appropriately, demonstrating an understanding of the components of a
variety of physical activities, in order to enhance their ability to participate successfully in those activities.
Specific Expectations:
B1.1 perform smooth transfers of weight and rotations, in relation to others and equipment, in a variety of
situations involving static and dynamic balance
B1.3 send, receive, and retain a variety of objects, while taking into account their position and motion in
relation to others, equipment, and boundaries, while applying basic principles of movement
B1.4 demonstrate an understanding of the phases of movement (i.e., preparation, execution, followthrough), and apply this understanding to the refinement of movement skills as they participate in a
variety of physical activities
UNIT PLAN
B2.1 demonstrate an understanding of the components of a range of physical activities (e.g., move-ment
skills, game structures, basic rules and guidelines, conventions of fair play and etiquette), and apply this
understanding as they participate in a variety of physical activities in indoor and outdoor environments
B2.3 apply a variety of tactical solutions to increase chances of success as they participate in physical
activities
Differentiation
- Students who are very good at basketball will be divided into different teams to create fair teams
-Students who are confident in their abilities will be called up to demonstrate basketball skills to the class
-Students who are struggling with the skills of basketball will be paired up with students who excel in the
game as a way of peer tutoring
-Students who are in a wheel chair may still participate in drills such as passing and shooting but do not
have to dribble if they are not comfortable with the skills when participating in games
-More or less time can be spent on each of the drills based on how quickly or slowly the class is learning
these skills
- Students with hearing loss may work on passing the ball, dribbling and shooting. In games teacher may
encourage the student’s teammates to work on visual signals to help the student out so they can fully
participate to the best of their abilities
-Students with vision loss may still work on passing the ball and shooting with the aid of another
classmate
