Student Council Riverside Student Council, along with their sponsors, traveled to Graham Creek Elementary for a leadership workshop on Saturday, September 28 th. The kids met with other student councils from across Southeast Indiana and spent the day learning various attributes of what it takes to be an excellent leader for an elementary student body. The kids met in whole groups, had break-out sessions, and learned many fun brain break chants and songs during the course of the day. They also worked on Student Council’s State project: “Choose Kind” by making blankets to distribute to needy people or organizations. When asked what they had learned, students replied with the following; “Working together to make kindness happen makes it not seem like work.” Philanthropy means giving time, talent, and treasure. Treasure is anything you cherish. ““Being a leader can mean a world of different things.” “I learned how to make a motion. “ ”Accepting others makes them and you feel better about themselves.” Although, several of our members weren’t fond of waking up early and meeting at school at 7:00 am, by the end of our workshop all were in agreement that much was learned and so much fun was had by all! The members of Riverside’s Student Council are working towards being named an Honor Council by the Indiana Association of Student Councils. The leadership workshop is one of many criteria the group has to fulfill in order to gain this prestigious award. When we return from Fall Break we will be celebrating RED RIBBON WEEK: A Healthy Me Is a Drug-Free Me! This is the week we pledge to say “NO” to drugs. We will be doing activities each day of Red Ribbon Week. Please use the flyer in our newsletter as your daily guide to Red Ribbon Week. Character Awards Every two weeks, our teachers nominate a student in their classroom to receive a character award. These students are announced on Mondays in our community meeting in the gym and have their pictures taken and put on the bulletin board outside the cafeteria. Congratulations to the following students for “Knocking it out of the Park with RESPECT”: Brianna Bobo, Anabelle Guerra, Kyla Jones, Michael Tate, Lilly Doss, Kendall Embry, Kirsten Monroe, Anaya Jones, Susie Henriquez, Gavin Van Fleet, Maddie Hartsfield, Hunter Flowers, Raquel Lopez, Cole Phillips, Hannah Miley, Corissa Rudolf, Lucy Morrison-Bland and Victory Shrewsberry. GCCS Cafeteria Policies: Students may charge 5 days of lunch and breakfast or up to $17.00 for paid students/$3.50 for reduced meal students. Once that limit is reached, students will be served an alternate meal at cost. If a balance exceeds $30.00, the student may be denied a meal for failure to pay. Please keep your child’s lunch account up to date by sending in cash or check prepaying online. It is very easy to set up the account online and monitor it. You can even have the system send you an email when the account balance is low and monitor meals purchased. Please do everything possible to keep your child’s account up to date. Go to the Greater Clark County website and hit the button for ‘online payment cafeteria’ to set up your child’s account. Please call Riverside if you have questions or need help. September 13 was the cut off for free/reduced lunch applications. If you were not approved by then, you will have to begin paying. Page 2 PAC NEWS Home Plate News: During the month of October, our PAC will have their monthly meeting on Oct. 21st in the RES library. The Fall Fundraiser will be discussed at this meeting. Please join them in putting a plan together to KNOCK IT OUT OF THE PARK with Paragon Promotions in their goal to raise $4,000.00+ for Riverside by selling Gourmet Cookie Dough and Popcorn this year! Any questions, call Angela Church at 502-693-2498. Attendance Update *Thank you for remembering to bring in notes when signing out early or arriving late for appointments. Our unexcused tardies have decreased! *Please remember to call school before 10:00 am if your child will not be at school. We worry about them when they are not here and we have not heard from you. *Good News: We had our first day this year with no unexcused tardies!! Let’s try to increase that number in October. Thank you for getting your children here on time. It makes a difference! Arrival and Dismissal Just a reminder that students should only be dropped off in the main parking lot. Please do not drop them off at the street or on the sidewalk adjacent to the line. There is no supervision there. Safety is our main concern and we are so appreciative of everyone who is following our procedures. When we all work together and are patient, our drop off and pick up will run smoothly.
