Ansonia will shift to a 4-4 defense this season after using a 4-3 formation last year.
Ansonia revamps its defense again
By Kyle Shaner
[email protected]
ANSONIA – For a
second consecutive season the Ansonia football
team is changing up its
defensive philosophy.
After employing a
4-3 defense last season,
defensive coordinator
Adam Hall along with
assistant coach Matt
Macy are having the
Tigers move to a 4-4
defense this year. Head
coach Eugene Hoening
said his assistants told
him the 4-4 is similar to
what the Tigers used in
the past, but he’s leaving
the defensive transition
to them.
“You heard the old
saying you can’t teach
an old dog new tricks.
I’m the old dog,” Hoening said. “The boys
have absorbed the 4-4
defense. I’ve got to give
Coach Hall and Coach
Macy especially credit
for explaining the intricacies of running a zone
and applying the knowledge to running a zone
defense. I’ve always been
a free safety, man guy.
And Coach Macy, Coach
Hall, says with all these
spread teams you just
can’t stay in man and
do it. So, OK, we’re in a
zone. I will say, though,
it seems to work.”
Entering his 36th
season at the helm for
Ansonia with more than
200 career victories,
Hoening said the assistant coaches are crucial
to the Tigers’ success.
“I’ve got to give credit
to our assistant coaches,” he said. “Coach
Macy, Coach Hall,
Coach (Stuart) Beisner.
When it comes to coaching, they go above and
beyond the call of duty.
They work well with the
boys. The boys respond
to them. If my boy was
young enough to play
football, I’d like these
guys to coach him, and
I think that’s what every
parent wants – some-
body who not only is
stern with the boy but
also compassionate and
understanding, and I
think these guys do that
well.”
Along with a strong
coaching staff, Ansonia
returns most its players
from last year after only
losing three seniors to
graduation. Those three
seniors – Nick Buckingham, Cody Burnfield
and Dane Wentworth –
were all four-year varsity
starters, though.
Assuming the quarterback duties from the
departed Wentworth
is sophomore Matthew
Shook.
“He’s doing fine now,”
Hoening said. “I don’t
know why things should
change.”
In addition to losing
Wentworth, Ansonia
also lost Cody Burnfield
and Nick Buckingham
from its backfield. Aydan
Sanders, Cody Sanders,
Trevor Beam, Jarvis
Thwaits and Devyn Sink
will try to replace the
lost production in the
backfield.
Of the Tigers’ top four
rushers last season, only
Aydan Sanders returns
so he will be relied on a
lot this season.
“I think Aydan will
have to carry more of
the load,” Hoening said.
“I don’t want to single
him out, but he’s the
back that comes back
with experience.”
Ansonia isn’t known
for its passing, but the
Tigers do have some
athletic ends in Max
Wardrip, Hunter Muir
and Peyton Setser.
The Tigers also have
their entire offensive
line back with Andrew
Rowland at center,
Ross Shook and Dylan
Burnfield at guard and
Nathan Denniston
and Rygh Fortkamp at
tackle.
“I would like to think
experience on the
offensive line (will be
a strength),” Hoening
said. “We have the offensive line back from last
year so keeping them
healthy and in the right
direction will be a key
for success with the
team.”
In the revamped
defense, Andrew Rowland, Austin Ward,
Mason Billenstein,
Nathan Denniston and
Austin Helmke will man
the inside at defensive
tackle. They will be
flanked by defensive
ends Ross Shook and
Rygh Fortkamp.
At linebacker Trevor
Beam, Jarvis Thwaits
and Andrew Rowland
will play the inside positions. Hunter Muir, Max
Wardrip, Peyton Setser
and Hunter Buckingham
will share the outside
linebacker duties.
Matthew Shook, Cody
Sanders and Aydan
Sanders are the projected starters in Ansonia’s
defensive backfield.
Moving to a 4-4
defense and more zone
concepts instead of
man-to-man, Hoening said the Ansonia
defense likely will have
more opportunities for
interceptions. However,
the zone also makes the
team more susceptible
to allowing pass completions.
“So maybe it’s part
of that bend-but-don’tbreak mentality,” Hoening said.
Last season Ansonia
finished just 2-8, but
Hoening is hoping his
squad can continue
improving and contend
for a Cross County Conference championship.
“My goal is always the
same: win the CCC and
go undefeated. Easier
said than done,” Hoening said. “Every team’s
goal should be that. Why
not?”

The Arcanum football team wants to get over the hump after three consecutive 5-5 seasons.
Arcanum looks to get over the hump
By Tim Alley
For The Daily Advocate
ARCANUM – The
2016 edition of the Arcanum Trojans football
team has a major goal in
mind after three straight
5-5 seasons.
Under the direction of
fifth-year head coach TJ
Powers, the Trojans are
“bound and determined
to get over the hump this
year.”
“The big thing …
major point of emphasis is team chemistry
between the guys,” Powers said. “We’ve been
really trying to be positive. It’s a family atmosphere. We spend a lot of
time together. Everybody
working together. Tried
to focus on giving the
extra effort and attention
to detail.”
Offensively, Arcanum
will be a blend of returning starters and players
with some experience
looking to make their
mark in the upcoming
season.
Pierce Lindemuth
takes over the controls of
the offense this year. The
5-foot 11-inch senior will
quarterback the Trojan
attack. He has the ability
to throw the ball and is a
“hard runner, who is like
a fullback playing QB.”
Featured running backs
will be senior Brandon
Kinney, who Powers
describes as a “workhorse.” Kinney scored 22
touchdowns last season
and rushed for more
than 1,000 yards. Junior
Daniel Coats completes
the tandem of backs who
can run either inside or
outside and score from
anywhere on the field.
The strength of the
offense may come from
the offensive line, which
returns four starters
from a season ago. With
center Cambell Gostomsky, guards Alex
Weiss and Caleb Harter
and tackles Brandon
Riffell and Maverick Hildebrand, Arcanum has
its largest O-line in the
Powers era.
Defensively, the Trojans use a 4-4 scheme.
“Simple, react fast,
downhill, aggressive,” is
the way Coach Powers
described his defense
philosophy. “Kids play
the fastest when they
know what they are
doing.”
The defensive line is
anchored by Gostomsky
with Kinney and Coats
adding support from the
linebacker position. The
defensive backfield is a
young unit that will be
gaining experience as the
season progresses.
The Arcanum schedule
requires the Trojans to
get off to a quick start if
they are to contend for
a Cross County Conference championship. In
weeks two-five they face
Covington, Tri-County
North, Miami East and
Twin Valley South. All
have been recent confer-
ence contenders and
have been playoff teams
in recent years.
“If you want to be the
best, you have to beat
the best,” Coach Powers
said.
In addition to Coach
Powers beginning his
fifth season, he is assisted by defensive coordinator Doug Morris, wide
receivers/cornerbacks
coach Jared Morris, running backs/safeties coach
Josh Whitaker, quarterbacks/outside linebackers
coach Theo Whitaker
and offensive/defensive
line coach Steve Hottle.

BRADFORD — When
the seniors on the Bradford High School football team went through
an 0-10 season as freshmen, the future looked
bleak for the Railroaders.
They have a very different outlook heading
into the 2016 season.
Those seniors include
Walker Branson, Bryson
Canan, Chase Gambill,
Wade Gerlach, Mason
Justice and Dillon Reck.
“We want to have
a successful season,”
Canan said as he spoke
the thoughts of the
group. “We want to
make the playoffs. We
went from 0-10 to playing a JV schedule to
4-6 last year. I think we
need to be leaders for
the rest of the team.”
After Nathan Hyatt
guided the Railroaders
to a respectable 4-6 season a year ago, he was
hired by Vandalia-Butler
as varsity coach for this
season.
“You know, nobody
gives the CCC (Cross
Country Conference)
much respect,” Bradford
first-year coach Dave
McFeely said. “But,
we have two coaches
coaching in the GWOC
(Greater Western Ohio
Conference) this year
with Division I programs.”
McFeely is taking
over the program after
joining the staff as an
assistant coach.
“I have 26 years
experience as a football
coach and 32 years as
a basketball coach,”
McFeely said. “I wasn’t
sure I wanted to do this
(take over a program at
this point in his career).
But, I just love these
kids. I think the worst
thing that could have
happened to these kids
after last year was a
new coach and a new
system and lot of them
expressed that. They are
very happy to have me.”
And McFeely has a
veteran staff around
him.
“Jim Hart is a veteran
coach — he will be our

CCC, which makes for a
lot of traveling.
The road games
include Troy Christian,
Johnstown Northridge,
Jefferson, Northwood
and Danville.
“We are still going to
get to see a lot of Ohio,”
McFeely said. “We have
three road games of over
125 miles (round trip).”
There is a good
chance this will be the
last year for that.
“If everything goes
well, hopefully we
will be back in the
conference next year,”
McFeely said. “I like
our numbers. We have
between 29 and 32 kids
each day. We lost our
first four games last
year – then won four in
a row. I really feel like
I stepped into a good
situation here.”
And he continues
to build on last year’s
program and give
the seniors the finish
to their careers they
deserve.

With a number of returning varsity players, Greenville football team expects to contend for a Greater Western Ohio Conference American North championship.
Wave feature an experienced roster
By Kyle Shaner
[email protected]
GREENVILLE – With
almost 20 letter winners
back from last year, the
Greenville football team
anticipates contending
for a Greater Western
Ohio Conference divisional championship
this season.
“We’ve got more experience than any group
we’ve had so far since
we’ve been here,” fifthyear Greenville varsity
football coach Aaron
Shaffer said. “We’re
excited about the prospect of having a bunch
of experienced guys.”
While the Green
Wave have a lot of talent back, they’ll have
to replace four-year
varsity quarterback Clay
Guillozet, who threw
for 1,100 yards and 12
touchdowns and ran
for 847 yards and six
touchdowns as a senior
last season to cap off a
record-setting career.
The Wave are confident that Kyle Phillips
can step up and take
over the reins, though.
As a sophomore Phillips started four games
at quarterback in relief
on an injured Guillozet,
and he also has seen varsity time on defense.
Phillips is a good
runner with a strong
arm, Shaffer said, and
he’s done a good job
of understanding the
offense and what he
needs to do to make the
team successful.
“To this point Kyle
has done a really nice
job with those things,”
Shaffer said. “Kyle’s a
good leader for us. Kyle
has a skillset that’s a little different than Clay’s
was.”
Behind Phillips,
Greenville also will have
a new look with Codi
Byrd lost to graduation.
However, the Wave
have a stable of running
backs including Logan
Eldridge, Justin Brown
and Micah Light ready
to step up.
“We feel like there
won’t be much of a drop
if any,” Shaffer said.
While the backfield
features some new faces,
Greenville’s receiving
core is intact from last
year with the Wave’s top
four receivers all returning this season.
“Most of that group
played significantly last
year,” Shaffer said. “So
they’re a group we feel
confident in.”
Bradley Mead, Devin
Hendrix, Aaron Rich,
Ryan Trick, Eli Moore
and Brandon Beyke will
be key contributors at
receiver. Rich and Noah
VanHorn are the teams’
top two tight ends.
“I feel like we’ve got
tremendous athleticism
out on the edge,” Shaffer said.
Also fully intact from
last year is Greenville’s
offensive line.
Tanner Swisshelm,
Carson Shilt, Braden
Russell, Kaleb Anderson, Dalton Kopilec and
Elias Watters make up
the group paving the
way for the Green Wave.
“Their experience on
the field is a huge part
of what’s going to make
us successful offensively,” Shaffer said.
The strength of Greenville’s 3-4 defense lies
in its linebackers. The
group is led by Erick
Madison and Logan
Eldridge, who both had
more than 90 tackles a
year ago. Justin Brown,
who had 81 tackles
last season, and Micah
Light also are in line for
starting positions while
Noah Walker is pushing
them for playing time as
well.
“Defensively I feel like
our line backing group
is probably going to
be the strength of our
defense,” Shaffer said.
“They’re a bunch of athletic, football-intelligent
kids.”
In front of the linebackers is a group of
defensive linemen that
includes Jacob Bradfield, Landin Brown,
Karsyn Fender, Johnathan Heeter, Noah
VanHorn and Braden
Russell.
“We’ve got some guys
up front on the defensive line who are playing
well right now through
camp and through the
early part of the season,” Shaffer said.
In the defensive
backfield Trey Wood,
Bradley Mead, Devin
Hendrix, Eli Moore and
Landon Eldridge are
competing for playing
time.
Greenville has several
players who are in the
mix to play both offense
and defense, but Shaffer is confident that the
Wave’s depth will allow
them to succeed playing
two ways.
“With the depth at a
lot of those positions
we’ll be able to get other
guys in there and not
see a drop off,” he said.
While they’ll get rest
when needed, Shaffer
also expects the Green
Wave’s offseason conditioning to pay dividends
for the players.
“Our players have
done a really nice job
this summer of getting
themselves in shape,” he
said.
With an athletic team
full of experience, Shaffer thinks Greenville will
have a strong season
and contend for a championship.
“If we take care of our
business each individual
week that helps take
care of our ultimate
goal, which is to be
GWOC North champs,”
he said.
The GWOC and the
GWOC North have a
new look this season
with Tippecanoe and
Stebbins joining the
league. Tipp now is a
GWOC North member,
replacing TrotwoodMadison who moves to
the GWOC South.
The divisional change
won’t affect Greenville
much as Greenville
already played Tippecanoe as a non-conference
opponent, and the Wave
will continue to play
Trotwood as a crossdivisional opponent.
“It’s an exciting time
in the GWOC in terms
of adding teams and
realignment, but for us
it really didn’t change
much,” Shaffer said.
The Wave’s biggest
scheduling change is no
longer having to play
Division I GWOC teams
such as Fairmont and
Lebanon that dwarfed
Greenville in terms of
enrollment. The new
scheduling format
should have more
quality match ups and
benefit all the teams in
the league, Shaffer said.

MV hopes for a turnaround under new coach
By Dale Barger
For The Daily Advocate
UNION CITY – The
Mississinawa Valley
Blackhawks football team
is coming off a 0-10 season last year with optimism that they can turn
things around in 2016.
New head coach Mike
Griffin takes over as the
third coach in three years
at MV and hopes to bring
stability to the program
moving the Blackhawks
forward in a positive
direction.
Griffin has a football
pedigree and is no
stranger to the game
with coaching stints at
Richmond High School
in Indiana, Fairborn High
School and most recently
at National Trail where
his son was the star quarterback, leading them
to their first ever playoff
appearance.
Griffin, who also serves
as athletic director, is
aware of where the program has been and the
challenges in trying to
turn it around.
“It’s not going to happen overnight,” he said.
“I’m a realist and know
the reality of the situation, and I’m excited for
the opportunity to prove
to the naysayers that it
can be done.”
The Blackhawks numbers have improved from
last year with 29 boys on
the roster.
“We would love to get
35-40 guys out in the
future,” Griffin said.
Much like a lot of the
new coaches in the Cross
County Conference who
are looking to use the
spread offense and utilize skill players, Griffin
wants to be a 60-40 pass
to rush type team.
“The Cross County
Conference traditionally
goes through Covington,
Miami East and TriCounty North, and we
want to be at that level
down the road … but
right now we need to
learn how to compete
and beat a lot of the
middle tier programs and
work our way up,” Griffin
said.
“In order to compete
we need to change some
things by cleaning up the
mistakes we’ve made in
the past through discipline. Last year we were
in games and then would
make mental errors or
turn over the football and
take ourselves out of the
game, and that won’t get
it done,” Griffin said.
“We’ve got great kids,
and they have been receptive and working hard,”
Griffin said. “We can’t
make them more athletic,
but we can expect them
to be more disciplined,
play harder and control
the things we can control.”
Offensively the Hawks
are still evaluating but
have a mix of returners
and new faces competing
for spots.
Right now the quar-
terback position is being
contested by four kids
– seniors Andrew Johns
and Perkins, sophomore
Trent Collins and freshman Cody Dirksen – and
they each bring something a little different to
the table.
“I’m trying to give
them all plenty of reps
to evaluate because this
is a very important position to me,” Griffin said.
“I want a guy with the
best characteristics who
can lead, makes the
right decision and get
the ball out of his hands
quickly.”
At wide receiver is
senior JJ Howard, junior
Noah Hopkins, and new
to the team this year is
senior Brandon Beanb-
lossom.
In the backfield
returning is Nathan
Gladdish, Noah Hampshire a big power back
and Dylan Rammel in
the slot position.
“Defensively we will
line up in a 4-4, and we
got our linebackers a
little more trained and
expect them to play
more disciplined than
last year. We have two
defensive co-coordinators and two more
coaches than last year,
and that helps tremendously to help coach
them up,” Griffin said.
The Blackhawks will
open up their season
with cross town rival at
home with Union City
at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 26.

Tri-Village will play its first season of varsity football this year. The Patriots will play as a conference independent this season.
Tri-Village readies for varsity football
For The Daily Advocate
NEW MADISON –
The Tri-Village Patriots
are taking the next step
in building their football program.
A program started
last year that went 6-2
playing a junior varsity
schedule now graduates
to a full varsity schedule this year.
“Last year our guys
improved immensely in
one season in just their
overall knowledge and
understanding of the
game,” veteran coach
Jason Schondelmyer
said.
The Patriots have
a 27-man roster that
includes seven seniors,
11 juniors, five sophomores and four freshmen.
The nice thing for the
Patriots is that everyone is back, including
some new faces.
Key returning players
are senior quarterback
Johnny Wilson and
running back Jared
Buckley, who generated
much of the offense last
year
Other key returning
offensive players are
sophomore running
back Austin Bruner
and junior Noah Burns.
Senior Josh Wiford,
who missed last year
due to a broken collarbone, is very competitive and ready to
go this year as well and
will play split-end and
defensive back.
Returning lineman
are Dagen White, Nick
Napier, Jackson Plush
and Mason Sullenbarger.
“We are miles ahead
of where we were last
year with regard to our
offensive and defensive
line,” Schondelmyer
said. “All these guys
have really gotten it
done in the off season, putting time in
the weight room, and
it’s shown so far in
the preseason as their
overall confidence has
improved, and that
comes from the work
they have put in.”
New faces on the
team will be senior
Gavin Richards and
Trace Couch, both athletic guys who should
have an impact right
away. Damien Edwards
is a junior who has
never played before,
and he could see action
on the line.
“We’ve done well in
our seven-on-seven
scrimmages, and we’re
happy with our skill
position play so far,”
Schondelmyer said.
The Patriots also
looked good in their
first full contact scrimmage with Twin Valley
South, who will be a
future Cross County
Conference opponent in
2017.
Tri-Village will play
an independent schedule this year with opponents that geographically are outside of our
area, and being unfamiliar with them will make
it a tough to prepare
… but the Patriots are
excited about having
a full varsity schedule
this year.
There are a couple of
teams that the Patriots
will have some familiarity with and will
provide a challenge. Jefferson, Preble Shawnee
and Bradford, a future
CCC team, are all within the 937 area code.
The good thing for
the Patriots all the
teams outside of this
area will be home
games with the exception of West-Del, Indiana.
“We are going into
this season regardless
of who our opponent
is with the intention of
preparing to compete
and win each and every
game,” Coach Schondelmyer said.
The Patriots’ style
of play this year will
expand off the success
they had last year by
utilizing their athletic
ability in the spread
offense.
“We believe in the
philosophy of getting
our speed out in space
and having offensive
lineman that can move
and run, getting into
the second and third
level to help us spring
big plays,” Schondelmyer said.
“We are going to be
a fast-paced team a lot
like what you would see
in the Oregon Ducks,”
Schondelmyer added.
“Defensively we want
to fly to the football
and play defense by
committee … each guy
has their own specific
responsibility but tack-
ling will be the key,”
Schondelmyer said.
“We have the speed to
keep up with the skill
kids, but we need to be
tough on the interior.”
It’s an exciting time
at Tri-Village there has
been a lot of hard work
put in by many people
to bring football to
the next level, and it’s
finally arrived.
New bleachers have
been installed on the
home side with a state
of the art press box and
sound system. The facility building that adorns
the entrance houses
a large weight room,
team rooms, officials
room, showers, storage
and concession stand.
“It’s a beautiful
place, and that’s a
credit to the administration, a credit to the
people in the school
district,” Schondelmyer
said. “They wanted
a program, a quality
program, and they produced the resources to
get it done. Right now
in my opinion, as far as
division VII schools go,
this is one of the greatest facilities around for
a small school.”
“Our kids realize
that a lot of sacrifices
have been made for
them to get this program going, and now
they have to be willing
to lay it on the line to
win games and pack
those new bleachers,
and that is what it’s all
about,” Schondelmyer
concluded.
It’s a great time to
be a Tri-Village Patriot
off the heels of 2015
boys basketball state
title and now alum
Clayton Murphy’s 800
meter bronze medal
performance in the Rio
Olympics.
Those results and
expectations will now
be passed on to the
football program and
the journey starts at
7:30 p.m. Aug. 26
when the Patriots
play their first varsity football game ever,
hosting the Jefferson
Broncos.

Versailles will play four teams that have won Ohio High School Athletic Association state championships in the past two years during the 2016 football season.
Inexperienced Tigers face tough schedule
By Kyle Shaner
[email protected]
VERSAILLES – On the schedule
for the 2016 Versailles football team
are four programs that have won Ohio
High School Athletic Association
state championships in the past two
seasons.
The Tigers will have to play all four
in a one-month span from Sept. 23
through Oct. 21 beginning with 2014
Division VII state champion Marion
Local and culminating with 2014
Division VI state champion Minster.
Along with those two powerhouses
is 2015 Division VII state champion
Fort Recovery on Sept. 30 and fourtime defending Division V state champion Coldwater on Oct. 14.
“That’s why we take it one week at
a time,” Versailles coach Adam Miller
said. “Try not to look at the season as
a whole.”
Versailles’ schedule would be a
daunting task for any team but could
be very treacherous for a Tiger squad
that has a lot of holes to fill from last
year’s team, which went 4-6 following
a playoff appearance in 2014.
Miller likes the potential of his
team but concedes that most of his
players haven’t yet proven themselves
in varsity games.
“Coming into this year I think we
have a lot of potential to do some
good things,” he said. “The biggest
thing up in the air is we don’t have a
whole lot of experience coming back.
We do have some returning starters.”
Perhaps the biggest hole to fill is
left by running back Collin Peters,
who earned first team all-Midwest
Athletic Conferences last year after
running for almost 1,200 yards as a
senior.
Instead of trying to replace Peters
with a single player, Versailles is
changing to a Wing-T offense with
Kyle Subler, George Grow, Noah
Grisez, Garrett Thompson, Kurtis
Rutschilling and Aaron Mangen sharing the running back duties.
“Instead of showcasing one running back, we felt like we have several
good running backs,” Miller said. “We
want to try to get more running backs
on the field.
“There’s quite a few of them. It’s
been a good thing because we feel like
a lot of those guys are interchangeable. They’re all very good athletes,
and they’ve worked hard in the weight
room. The hard part is going to be
narrowing it down to the three we
want to put out there.”
Versailles also has to replace quarterback Jared Niekamp, who threw for
more than 1,300 yards as a senior last
year.
Alex Wendel, who caught 32 passes
as a receiver in 2015, is leading the
quarterback competition for Versailles
despite not having played the position
since his freshman year in 2013.
Wendel is being pushed for the
starting position by Noah Waymire.
Also in the mix is Keaton McEldowney, who has been limited this
summer by injuries.
Versailles will utilize multiple offensive packages, including looks with
one receiver and one tight end and
others with two tight ends.
The Tigers expect big things from
AJ Ahrens as their starting tight,
Miller said, and also expect Jacob
Rismiller to play well as the second
tight end. Wendel and McEldowney
are the leading candidates to play
wide receiver if they’re not in at quarterback.
“We really don’t have many receivers right now just because of changing the offense some of those guys
that were receivers have moved to
running back,” Miller said.
Versailles has a veteran group on
the offensive line with five seniors
currently slated for starting spots.
Jacob Heiktamp will start at left
tackle for a third consecutive season.
Eric Knapke has moved from center
to left guard, and Bo Bey is moving
into the starting center spot. Cole
Schlater is slated to be the starting
right guard while Grant Keller returns
as the starting right tackle. Jeffery
Ware and Ben Albers also are pushing
for playing time along the line.
On defense Versailles will continue
to employ a 4-3 scheme.
Levi Sherman and Louden Keihl are
leading the way for playing time at
defensive tackle. At end, the Tigers
will rotate in a number of players,
most of whom also are playing offensive line, to keep them fresh.
“Defensive ends, I feel like we’re sitting very well with them,” Miller said.
“We’ve got probably six guys that can
play at the varsity level.”
Jonny Moorman and Kurtis Rutschilling, who each had 90 tackles last
season, return to lead the Versailles
defense from the linebacker position.
“Those two are back to kind of lead
the defense,” Miller said, adding the
third linebacker spot alongside them
is still up for grabs.
In the defensive backfield Versailles
has a pair of three-year starters in
Sam Barga and Mitchell Paulus.
They’ll be joined by George Grow and
Tanner Bey to form an athletic group.
“We’re pretty confident with our
defense,” Miller said.
Versailles will be tested right away
as the Tigers begin the season with
Celina, a Division III team that made
the OHSAA playoffs last year. They
then face a perennially tough opponent in Valley View before moving
into their challenging MAC schedule.
“Our non-conference schedule
is pretty difficult in my opinion,”
Miller said. “Celina is a good-sized
school, and they always have some
good, hard-nosed players. It’s always
important to get that first win of the
season. Valley View, they usually do
pretty well in their league so as far as
computer points go it’s good to get
those non-league wins to help yourself
out for a chance at the playoffs.”
Miller would like to see his team
contend for a playoff spot in 2016
after a disappointing 2015 season.
“Looking at last year, it’s disappointing to go 4-6, but there were four
games that could have went the other
way, and you could be looking as good
as 8-2,” he said.
To be able to contend for the playoffs, Miller knows that the Tigers will
have to limit their mistakes as there
isn’t much room for error with their
tough schedule.
“We tell the kids all the time our
schedule is tough enough,” he said.
“We don’t need to make it any harder
on ourselves.”
