Coaching Derbyshire Bursary Fund Guidance

Coaching Derbyshire Bursary Fund
One of the main barriers coaches face in their on-going development is the cost of coaching
courses and training to continually learn and develop themselves in their chosen sport(s).
Coaching Derbyshire recognises this is a key area where we can support coaches and is
pleased to be able to offer financial support for coaches and activators who meet the
application criteria.
In order to apply for a Coaching Derbyshire bursary, you will need to fit into one of the
categories below:

Coaching within a community sports club

Coaching females

Coaching young people (5-18 years)

Coaching in deprived areas

Setting up an activity or group to get people active
What funding support might I receive?
The table below identifies the amount that coaches can apply for and the number of
voluntary hours (signed off by a referee) you will be required to complete to receive funding.

When should I apply for funding?
You must apply before your course begins for us to forward your application to the panel.
There are 3 rounds each year. If you apply just after the closing date of one round, you are
likely to wait 4-5 months before you will know if your application is successful. You can
apply several months before you begin your course. If you know that in your sport, the
course you wish to undertake is at the end of the year, then you can apply at the beginning
of the year. Here is an example of how long you may need to wait before you get a decision
and when to apply to get a decision in good time.
Round End Dates
Round 36 - April 1st – May 14th 2017
Round 37 – May 15th 2017 – September 3th 2017
Round 38 – September 4th – February 4th 2018
What happens at the end of a round?
There are 3 rounds each year. When a round closes, the next one opens immediately.
Applications within the round that has closed are forwarded to the panel for consideration
and we will contact you by the end of the following month with the outcome.
When do I have to complete my course?
We recognise that some courses may take some time to complete. A level 3 course may
take 2 years to complete whereas a level 1 course could be completed in a few weeks. If
you have not claimed the bursary allocated to you within 2 years of the date your acceptance
letter is sent, we will reallocate the funding unless you have contacted us to advise us
otherwise.
Club/ organisation Allocation limits
Club/organisations should be aware of the maximum amount coaches at their club can
receive per year per level; however we will consider further applications from clubs if
demand can be justified.

Individual Allocation Limits (subject to limits in tables 1 and 2):
You are able to apply for 1 qualification at each level per year, if you are applying in a
different year for another qualification at a level you already hold we will need to see
evidence of how this will further benefit the people you aim to/are coaching.
This is also subject to club limits too (see table 4), so if coaches at your club have received
the maximum that can be allocated to a club in a year, your application won’t be forwarded
to the panel.
I am not able to complete my course due to unforeseen circumstances and so I won’t
be claiming my bursary, can I transfer it to another coach in my club?
Unfortunately no, unclaimed funding will go back into the bursary fund. If another coach in
your club would like to apply for funding, they will need to make an application themselves.
I would like to help my son or daughter or a coach at my club apply for the bursary.
Can I submit an application on their behalf?
We would like to encourage you to support coaches with their application, but the application
needs to be made by the coach and the e-mail address should belong to the coach. Why
don’t you set aside some time to sit with the coach and to complete the application together?
The reason we need the coach to apply is because when they complete the application form,
they create a basic coach profile on the Coaching Derbyshire database and they can revisit
this profile at any time to add qualifications, tell us about the sessions they are coaching or
assisting at, tell us about new coach qualifications they have achieved, book onto courses
and apply for a bursary in the future.
When can I access the funding I have been allocated?
Once you have been allocated funding, it will be ring-fenced until you have successfully
completed your course.
We ask you to send/complete:

A copy of your certificate

A bank transfer form (Please expect to wait up to 6 weeks for the amount
allocated to reach your bank account.)

Monitoring Form which tells us what you have gained from your course and asks
your referee to sign off your voluntary hours.
