Comp. & HC Secretary Captain Avalon B Vice Captain Avalon C Captain 3 Counties A Captain 3 Counties B Club Treasurer - Invited Introduction MS: Good evening & welcome to the meeting, especially to Alan Forscutt as a stand-in for Dave Kerswell & Dave Gregory as an invitee. 2. Apologies All present - No apologies 3. Minutes of the Last Meeting on 10th August 2016 The minutes of the last meeting were accepted as correct, proposed by CW seconded by BB. 4. Matters Arising Treasurer’s report – Dave Gregory At the August meeting, JR wondered why we didn’t have the men’s treasury report presented to the Playing Committee, i.e.: Where is the competition entry fee going? Club treasurer DG was invited to give his explanation: The entry fee monies goes to engraving of trophies (men’s comp.) & entry fees for Lombard etc. that involves members & Pro-staff. 10% goes into the General Account, 5% to the Pro-shop. At present there is approx £1600.00 in the account. DG further invited suggestions as to how the funds could be best spent. A lengthy debate followed regarding Prize-money, i.e.: Should there be a fixed amount paid out regardless of number of entrants (like in the Seniors’ section) or should we continue with a percentage pay-out, maybe with different figures. (At present it is 45% - 35% - 20%) MS suggested we continue with the present system CW suggested that entrance fees next year for “In-house” matches should be increased from £2.50 to £3.00 (£6.00 for pairs) MS asked where the profit from the Club diary goes; Answer: The General Account. 1 JR asked if any claims could be made for expenses; Answer: There is nothing in writing, but expenses for items such as stationary will be refunded. MS asked if the Pro-shop was going to supply the new printer that is required. CW replied: Yes, & AE will supply paper & cartridges. Computer monitor MS: The monitor is now in situ in the foyer and the recently bought laptop will be kept behind the bar to be accessed by the Comp. & HC secretaries only.. JR: It appears that there are some problems with the touch-screen monitor, which at times “switches itself off”. This has resulted in the computer not registering some scores that have been entered, thereby affecting the CSS for the day. CW reminded everyone that if the computer is “down”, mark the cards and put them in the relevant box. Action: CLOSED PS! The touch screen requires a “double-tap” to activate. E-mail communication – reporting GO, as acting secretary for the Committee, had at the August meeting expressed his frustration over the lack of communication from one of the Team Captains. Since then, MS has had a word with the Captain of Avalon C, and an agreement was reached that that the team’s Vice Captain would represent at the monthly meetings and submit the report if the team Captain was unable to attend. Action: CLOSED Secretary to Playing Committee MS: The proposal to hand the Secretarial duties of the Playing Committee to the Club Vice Captain was brought up in the Main Committee meeting 31st August. The Committee unanimously agreed. Action: CLOSED Competition Folder to be checked (Men’s section) General comments: CW proposing that entry fees for 2017 are increased from £2.50 to £3.00 (£6.00 pairs) Agreed CW also proposed that the two following competitions are discontinued due to lack of support / interest: 1) Easter Monday Texas Scramble 2) Spring Bank Holiday Texas Scramble Agreed CW further proposed that all proceeds go to prize-fund (Not 90%) Agreed Specific competitions: a) New Year’s Texas Scramble - Changes: Fee increased to £3.00, 100% of money collected for prizes. b) Captains v. Club Captain’s Report MS reported: This month has seemed to pass very quickly we have had some very good attendance to some club events, including the Mixed Stirrers and the Townsend Trophy; also the high attendance to two non-club events: the Abbey Hill and the Rotary Club days. I praised the Ladies section at the main committee for their excellent organisation of the Ladies Open, where 70 visitors took part. I am going to organise a fund-raising event on the 5th November to raise monies for the driving net to be situated close to the first tee. There will be a new car to be won on the par 3, 11th plus other prizes. The format will be confirmed in the next couple of weeks. I would appreciate if you would let all your team members be aware of the event. 7. Competitions & Handicap Secretary Report CW reported: All running competitions have finished, bar one, as one person has been in several finals. It has therefore taken time to get them finished. The mens’ section has two comps. Left: The Team Captains’ Challenge & the Cumisky Cup. They will be played on the 24th & 25th September respectively. 3 JR reported: I am happy to report that not to many cards are not filled out correctly which is a plus. I said that I would write out a” Conditions of Entry” notice. These are some of the important issues so far. 1.You must be a Full Gold member of Wheathill Golf Club if the competition is played at the weekend. 2. 5 day members can enter but must pay a green fee into the Pro shop. 3.You must have a currant competition handicap. 4.Buggies are only allowed with a “Doctors Letter” in all competitions. 5.You must have played in the stipulated amount of qualifying competitions before the closing date of the Competition. 6.All entrants must have paid their entry fee and signed in the Pro shop before teeing off; failure to do so will mean disqualification. 7.Notification that you cannot play must be given to the Competition Secretary ASAP. Failure to do so, will mean you will have to pay your entry fee. 8.Any disputes will be taken to the Competition’s committee and the results will be on hold until a satisfactory conclusion. 9.Measuring devises allowed, provided they do not feature wind speed & direction. 10.The Rules of Golf must be adhered to. 8. Team Captains’ Reports Avalon A: CW: Our last match was against Orchardleigh, played in bad weather, and was abandoned half way through, and the match was halved. We ended up second from bottom in the league. Hopefully we will be better next season, as I have new players coming in. Avalon B: CA: Since our last meeting, we have now played our last 2 games, both against promotion chasing Burnham. Firstly, away at Burnham in terrible wet and windy conditions. We lost 4½ to ½. Of course the weather played straight into their hands, ideal links play, that’s why we lost! The last game, played Sunday, Burnham required to beat us at least 4½½ to win the league and we needed to win 2 of the 5 games to improve our position (off the bottom). Of course, they fielded a very strong team; yes it was a little one sided, we won 4-1, a nice way to finish the season and give us hope for next season. Rather than get the sack, I resigned from the captaincy post (joking hopefully), Paul Hardie will now captain the B team, I shall help him with regards to the fixtures for next season and assist him at the AGM if required. I'm sure he'll do a good job and quite possibly attend the meetings. I shall be looking forward to my club commitments in the next couple of years. I did enjoy running the B team with mixed results, but l feel the team is looking stronger now in depth and in commitment 4 then it was 2 years ago. I shall look forward to playing next season in a more relaxed role as a player (if selected), Avalon C: AF: Report from DK: 23rd July – Cannington away. We had a draw, my first time of playing this course and found it in good condition and good company. My team enjoyed the day. 7th August – Cricket St.Thomas away. We were made very welcome. The game was played in the right spirit. We had lovely weather and a good course. Again we came away with a draw. 3rd September – Cannington at home. This was a great end to the season, as we won all 5 games; such a shame about the weather. We ended up in 3rd place, and I would like to thank my team for a good season and look forward to the next year. One team member has asked how the draw is made up for home competitions. 3 Counties A: GH: Two matches since our last meeting, a 3-2 loss away to Folke and a 3 1/2 - 1 1/2 home loss to Cannington. We’ve finished in third place overall for the season and in second place for the reserves trophy. 3 Counties B: BB: We played Bullpits at home on 10th Sept. They only turned up with 5 players which is minimum. We won all 5 matches winning by 17-0 and taking the Steve Harris Trophy match (the reserves) by default, which means we have won the latter with a match to spare. We're now 4th (from 6) in the league. We could finish 3rd if we whitewash Cannington away on the 17th - an unlikely task. Bullpits have pulled out of the league unfortunately because they struggle so much to get a team together but the good news is that Cricket St Thomas are joining the league next season. 9. A.O.B. Additional Committee member MS informed the Committee that the Seniors’ Avalon team Captain will join the Playing Committee next year. Seniors’ Matches – Results GO asked MS to forward a request to the Seniors’ Captain that Friendly- & Avalon match results are put on the notice board. Action: GO to request above by e-mail via the Club Captain Marker pens for Wipe-board JR requested that marker pens are made available Action: MS Drawing of teams AF, on behalf of a member of the Avalon C team, asked how the teams are drawn in Home Competitions. CW: Random draw. Action: CLOSED Qualifiers 5 6
