1. CALL TO ORDER
The Chair called the meeting to order at 2:05pm.
2. APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA
The agenda was approved.
3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The minutes of February 8, 2011 were approved.
4. CHAIR’S REPORT
Barrett and Schutte attended the Provost’s Budget Working Session. Schutte saw the event as a
narrative, asking for suggestions.
Barrett attended the Instructional Technology Academic Forum, hosted by Vice President Baker
on March 8th. The focus of the meeting was on IT Vision @ 2015. The focus of the meeting was
on (1) on-line learning, (2) support for research in collaboration with other institutions, (3)
digitizing content and (4) the revitalization of learning spaces and expanded collaborative study
spaces outside of classrooms.
Barrett stated at a recent Faculty Senate meeting the President stated the campus is in good shape
for the next fiscal year. We have access to a large population, large enrollment, and able to
balance things through. Also, we have increased grants and contracts, are providing freshman
“stretch” classes, and are limiting super seniors as effective strategies.
5. EXECUTIVE SECRETARY’S REPORT
Stephens explained the compilation of table group results from the Budget Working Session on
March 4th. She explained the results of the Resource Allocation Choices and Revenue Generation
and Cost Savings Ideas.
Schutte stated some of the costs saving ideas were not listed from his list. For example, Facilities,
Promote Business, and to look at summer school and possibly doing a tri-semester plan.
6. SUPPORT FOR VETERANS
TIME CERTAIN 3:00PM (W. WATKINS; A. LEVIN)
Vice President of Student Affairs, William Watkins and Dr. Amy Levin of the Department of
Social Work were invited to the ERC meeting to speak about support for veterans at CSUN.
Watkins provided details of a variety of services and programs available to veterans. Watkins
stated that Eloisa Smith, in the Admissions and Records office, is the Veterans Coordinator and
she assists students who are veterans. Watkins noted that not all veteran students ask for benefits,
and the ones that do can find help through the Admissions website: “Veterans Affairs.” The
Office of Veterans Affairs is located in Bayramian Hall Room 150 and their primary mission is to
help veterans, reservists, and dependents of disabled or deceased veterans to receive educational
benefits.
Watkins also noted there is a veterans’ working group that includes a variety of members and
faculty representatives include Amy Levin and Nathan Durdella. This group focuses on defining
what it means to be a veteran-friendly campus and recommending ideas to better serve the veteran
population. Because veterans self-identify, the university is looking for ways to attract veterans
and let them know of their benefits. There is a current Campus Quality Fee proposal for the
development of Veteran Resource Center in the USU. A faculty member in Biology has endowed
an Outstanding Graduating Veteran award. Student Outreach and Recruitment is developing a
recruitment piece for veterans and discussing ways to provide specialized information on the
campus portal for veterans. Watkins stated the need to ready all areas on campus to serve
veterans.
Levin noted the survey work done by Nathan Durdella to assess veteran student education and
mental health needs. Levin also stated that veterans are very independent, and there are currently
155 self-identified on campus. The Department of Social Work and student veterans have joined
together and the social work students help counsel the student veterans. Levin noted that more
veterans will be coming to CSUN in the future and we need to heighten the awareness that there
are benefits for them.
Alviso noted that some veterans have emotional sensitivities and some of them are in the
Reserves, meaning they might be called to go any time. It was also noted that some female
veterans might have experienced military sexual trauma, creating a more challenging time for
them versus males as they transition to college life. Watkins invited input, thoughts, and ideas to
help as programs develop, especially since the institution will have no new funding for veteran
services.
7. CSU ACADEMIC SENATE REPORT
Chong provided information on the CSU Teacher Education Summit. With a limit of 230 people,
270 people attended. Speakers included Martha Cantor and Lee Schulman. Schulman
recommended thinking about the medical model of teacher preparation. It includes inculcation to
the career and adoption of a clinical model. Emphasis was on the critical nature of deep
knowledge. Of note is that about two-thirds of teachers start in community colleges. This may
mean the CSU should do more with community colleges for teacher preparation. Chancellor Reed
summarized the need for (1) collaboration among all sectors, (2) systematic reform, (3) expansion
of what works, (4) integral connections with teachers, and (5) new and innovative directions.
Chong noted that Steven Stepanek of CSU Northridge and three others are being forwarded as
recommendations for consideration as faculty representative to the CSU Board of Trustees.
8. SATISFACTION BY EXAM (SCHUTTE)
Schutte stated that the chair of EPC does not believe satisfaction by exam has to do with
curriculum, but believes it is related to assessment. Schutte has had discussions and believes there
is a need to convince assessment coordinators that student learning objectives (SLOs) would be
met. There was discussion of the need for intense writing and intense review of writing. Schutte
will discuss assessment concerns with Bonnie Paller and modify the draft document accordingly.
9. 125% RULE (SCHUTTE)
Because of time constraints, the 125% Rule discussion is deferred to the next ERC meeting in
April.
10. AGENDA ITEMS FOR APRIL 12, 2011, IN UN 211
Schutte will provide an update on Satisfaction by Exam
Schutte will speak about the 125% rule
The meeting was adjourned at 3:00 pm.
The April meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 12, 2011, from 2-4 pm in the UN 211.
