The Communication Arts Department hosted Mrs.
Randa Berri to give a speech on “Women-influencers:
It’s your time”, on Wednesday 26th of April, in the
presence of President of AUST, Mrs. Hiam Sakr, VicePresident Dr. Riad Sakr, and an avid crowd of media
professionals, faculty members of various departments
and students.
Mr. Antoine Salameh was the moderator; after
welcoming the attendees, he introduced the topic.
President Sakr welcomed Mrs. Berri and said that
Mrs. Berri is a genuine example of the pioneering
Lebanese woman; a woman who had struggled through
endless hardships to accomplish it all, and who had
championed gender and human rights across Lebanon
and the region. “Her voice is well respected and heard;
a living proof of a pioneering Lebanese woman whom
we are all so proud of. We consider it an honor if she
considers AUST her home” President Sakr said. Dr.
George Farha, Chairperson of the Communication
Arts Department, in turn, said that it is difficult to write
about someone of Mrs. Randa Berri’s caliber; an avid
achiever in so many realms, with an endless passion
for hard work, and for sustainable development. Dr.
Farha highlighted the fact that Mrs. Berri and Mrs. Sakr
share the same “values of faith, resilience and strength
needed to build the youth of our nation for a better
tomorrow. They both seek to empower the youth for
public good. They seem to chant in unison: “ Lebanese
Women! It is your time! make the change !” Dr. Farha
said. A short film that highlights some of the most
important achievements of Mrs. Berri was screened.
In her speech, Mrs. Berri shared her experience
and struggle to accomplish so much in a country full
of turmoil, injustice equality between genders and
strife. “We refuse to die, and we will breathe the air
they wanted to cut from us” she said. “We stood tall
and showed the world that our faith and will to live are
strong; we will create joy out of pain and move on.” She
continued; “I am not the only one. I have my family, my
husband who supported me along the way. Partners
need to help each other and fortify each other. These
experiences changed my perspective on life. ” She
ended her speech by exhorting all to join hands for the
betterment of this country, saying, “we have a duty; we
must learn to unite and work together for our well-being
as a nation.”
The students had the chance to exchange thoughts and
ask their questions during the Q& A session, addressing
the students with the following words: “ the youth must
act immediately and believe in themselves. Have faith,
work hard and build skills and get education.”
At the end of the event, President Sakr presented Mrs.
Randa Berri with AUST’s Shield of Appreciation, which
was followed by a group picture.
AUST Hosts Dr. Donald Thomas, US NASA Astronaut
VP Dr. Riad Sakr presenting sculptured wooden cedar
to NASA Astronaut Dr. Donald Thomas in the presence of President Hiam Sakr
For the first time in Lebanon, a renowned US NASA astronaut
is invited to share with an avid crowd his experience and
adventures in space. This feat was accomplished by the
American University of Science and Technology (AUST);
it welcomed US NASA astronaut Dr. Donald Thomas at
the UNESCO Palace to give a motivational lecture on
“Overcoming obstacles to achieve your dream in life”. The
Event started with the Lebanese Anthem and was followed
by two documentaries on space and AUST. Afterwards,
Dr. Zouhair Attieh, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences
welcomed the attendees and the guest speaker. Then,
US NASA astronaut Dr. Donald Thomas presented a very
interactive presentation in which he shared his life lessons,
secrets, and his experiences. By “keeping [his] eyes on the
stars,” Dr. Thomas – despite the constant rejection – was
able to achieve his ultimate goal of becoming an astronaut.
The lecture was motivational and inspirational, especially
to the over 800 high school students and AUST alumni.
By showing pictures of his time in space and going into
details of his four experiences of living in a space shuttle,
Dr. Thomas intrigued the attendees and offered to answer
their questions and take pictures with them. President Hiam
Sakr and VP Riad Sakr presented Dr. Donald Thomas with
a beautifully sculptured wooden Cedar tree and a book on
Lebanese Phoenician and Modern History.

AUST Wins 1st Place in NDU Inter-University Finance Competition
2017's Spring Semester witnessed AUST's first invitation
and victory to the 2nd annual NDU Inter-university
Finance Competition featuring the top business schools
of the country.
The competition took place on Friday, April 21st at the Issam
Fares Hall on the NDU campus. Teams consisting of 3
undergraduate students from 6 prestigious local universities
fought for first place, namely, AUB, AUST, LAU, NDU, UA,
and USEK. Elie Khairallah, Said Baghdadi and Lynn Sayegh
represented AUST and were tasked with answering 30
strictly timed questions revolving around multiple sections
and areas of finance: 5 easy, 15 average, and 10 hard level.
Questions ranged from beginner and intermediate level
corporate finance to investment and portfolio management
as well as derivative instruments; topics that AUST students
have rigorously tackled in their program.
Thanks to AUST'S robust curriculum and the guidance
of our esteemed Mr. Antoine Aouad, Chairperson of the
Accounting Department, instructor, and team’s supervisor,
and Dr. Robert Gharios, Chairperson of the Finance
Department and the Assistant Dean of the Faculty of
Business and Economics, the team proudly achieved a
resounding victory; NDU came second, and LAU third.
Dr. Toufic Haidamous, Coordinator of the Interior Design
Department and instructor at the Arts and Design Department
of AUST, had the pleasure present the department at the
12th EAD Conference, where he presented his research
paper entitled “Rethinking the Role of Design within the
Technological Advancement in Biomimetics and SynBio”. The
conference was held in the historical venue of the Faculty
of Architecture in Valle Giulia, located at the border of Villa
Borghese, the greatest public park in the centre of Rome.
During the three-day conference, the participants were
engaged in an interdisciplinary debate and had the opportunity
to share ideas and research experiences with the EAD
Community, as well as the international leading thinkers
in design, who introduced a range of different ways of
approaching the next future: Derrick De Kerchove described
his personal vision of next in the field of Design, society and
technology; Maurizio Montalti (Officina Corpuscoli) gave his
exploration on the discipline of design that aims to investigate
and reflect upon contemporary culture, thereby creating new
opportunities and visions for both the creative industry and
a broader social spectrum; Gavin Munro presented how his
practice (Full Grown) challenges the way we create products,
as well as how we see the artifacts surrounding ourselves,
often replacing the natural environment; Nicolas Nova (Geneva
School of Art) shared his approach on reflecting on the next
future, practicing research on the new media practices, design
fiction and speculative design as co-founder of The Near
Future Laboratory, a research organization based in Europe
and California; Anna Pellizzari (Executive Director at Material
Dr. Toufic Haidamous
Dr. Haidamous with Dr. Dario Martini and Dr. Isabella Loddo
ConneXion Italia) is one of the most inspiring women in the
Italian design scenario and she focused on the importance
of innovative materials for the next design generation; Arturo
Vittori (Architecture and Vision, Warka Water) showed how
merging cutting edge technologies together with ancient
traditions can result in projects on the edge between Art and
Science that address to the most urgent needs of our society.
In one of the parallel sessions in the track, Design for Next
Technology, Dr. Toufic Haidamous presented his research
paper that summarizes the findings of his doctoral studies
conducted at the Istituto Universitario Academico di Venezia
(IUAV) in which he rethought the role of design in humanizing
biotechnology by investigating the applications of biomimetics
and their innovative attributes, on one hand, and by
addressing social implications of SynBio (Synthetic Biology),
on the other hand. Comparison of both applications and
implications highlighted the convergences and divergences
in the role of design for the current and next technology in
Biomimetics and SynBio.
All the research papers accepted and presented in the
conference will be promoted and disseminated through
publication of the conference proceedings. To date, The
European Academy of Design has hosted 12 international
conferences and has been publishing in the refereed journal,
The Design Journal.
All the participants and speakers enjoyed the 12th EAD
Conference that encouraged discussions across traditional
boundaries between practice and theory, and among
disciplines defined by working media, materials, and areas
of application.

American University of Science and Technology
The Chairman of Radiologic Sciences, Dr. Achraf Al Faraj, Presents Two
of his Latest Research Results in the Prestigious “European Molecular
Imaging Meeting” in Cologne, Germany
As the only participant from Lebanon
and Arab countries, Dr. Al Faraj got the
acceptance from the European Society of
Molecular Imaging (ESMI) to present two of
his latest research results in the 12th annual
European Molecular Imaging Meeting (EMIM
2017) that was held this year from 5 to 7 April
2017, in Cologne, Germany.
The ESMI is providing an interdisciplinary
platform for knowledge exchange in the
field of Imaging Science covering basic
sciences, translational aspects as well as
clinical applications.
In his first presentation entitled “Efficient
theranostic of Cancer Stem Cells using
combined delivery of drug-conjugated
SWCNTs nanocarriers”, Dr. Al Faraj
suggested that combined delivery of
Salinomycin and Paclitaxel chemotherapeutic
drugs via biocompatible and optimized
SWCNTs nanocarriers provides encouraging
results for improved diagnosis and therapy of
actively targeted Breast Cancer Stem Cells,
holding great potential for effective breast
cancer treatment.
In this second presentation entitled “Targeting
and Noninvasive MR Imaging of IL4Rα
Asthma Biomarker in the Lung using magnetic
nanocarriers” presented a novel approach
to target an asthma biomarker in the lung
by developing an anti-IL4Rα conjugated
nanocarriers that was shown to enhance the
delivery of the antibodies specifically to the
site of lung inflammation and better control
lung inflammation with a much lower side
effect to alternative ordinary approaches.
A year ago, many investors had given up on
Apple, whose stock price had fallen more
than 30 percent from its 2015 peak. Apple’s
once-unstoppable growth had come to a
crashing halt: The number of iPhones sold
was down 13 percent, and the company
posted its first revenue decline in 13 years.
Today, Apple’s business remains sluggish,
but that hasn’t stopped investors. Shares of
the tech giant — the most valuable company
in the United States by market value — have
repeatedly hit new highs this year. On Friday,
they closed at $143.65, up nearly 60 percent
from last May’s trough.
“Everyone expects Apple to cure cancer with
their next product launch,” said Kevin Landis,
chief executive of Firsthand Funds, who
has managed tech-focused mutual funds
through many ups and downs. Investors will
get more data about Apple’s performance,
and perhaps some clues about its future,
on Tuesday, when the company reports its
results for the financial quarter that ended
in March. Analysts expect the company to
report a slight increase in iPhone sales and
overall revenue.
Apple declined to comment ahead of its
earnings report. Mr. Landis sold most of
Firsthand’s Apple position near last year’s
bottom, but he said he had no regrets
despite the stock’s recent gains. He expects
Apple to continue churning out incremental
improvements rather than shake up the
industry. The biggest change in last fall’s
iPhone 7, he noted, was the elimination of
the headphone jack.
Apple is expected to make more exciting
updates in its next high-end iPhone, including
a high-resolution screen that covers the
phone’s entire face. But the company has
also suggested that much of its future growth
will come from services like Apple Music,
Apple Pay and the cut that Apple takes from
application sales and subscriptions in the
app store.
Apple executives, who are fond of using
the word “revolutionary” to describe their
products, have also acknowledged some
missteps. After watching iPad unit sales
spiral downward for 12 quarters in a
row, the company introduced a cheaper
model in March to win over schools that
were flocking to Chromebooks. Apple is
also likely to update its Pro models for
businesses this year.
“We made something bold that we thought
would be great for the majority of our Mac
Pro users. And what we discovered was that
it was great for some and not others,” Philip
Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president for
marketing, said at the meeting. “We’re sorry
for that, what happened with the Mac Pro,
and we’re going to come out with something
great to replace it.”
The company is developing augmented
reality technology, including eyeglasses
that will overlay real objects with digital
ones. Some expect a rudimentary form
of augmented reality to show up in the
next iPhone.
The Food and Drug Administration approved
the first drug to treat a severe form of multiple
sclerosis, a nervous system disease that
harms the brain's ability to communicate
with the rest of the body, offering hope to
patients who previously had no other options
to combat a relentless disease that leads to
paralysis and cognitive decline.
The new drug, called Ocrevus, is sold
by the company Genentech and can be
given through an intravenous infusion by
a health professional.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) approved Ocrevus to treat primary
progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS) as
well as more common relapsing forms of MS.
Both diseases are characterized by cognitive
decline and weakness. People with MS
undergo periods of relapses and remissions,
and the cycle can harm mental and physical
function. An estimated 15% of people with
MS will have PPMS, in which they have
steady declines in function usually without
relapses or remissions. In clinical trials,
people with MS who took Ocrevus had lower
relapse rates and less disability compared to
people taking another drug for the disease.
In a study of 732 people with PPMS, the drug
slowed the men and women's worsening
symptoms better than a placebo. Though the
drug does not halt disease progression for
people with PPMS, it remains the first and
only drug approved the condition.

LIGHTER SIDE
Horoscopes
ARIES March 21 - April 19
Your social life looks like it will be very busy at this time.
Reaching out to others can encourage you to get to know
certain people better, whether in terms of a business
relationship or a budding romance. Also, you might feel moved to
make a decision regarding a creative venture. If you've already put
this off for too long, this could be the week you get started. Finally, a
shimmering blend of energies midweek could be perfect for romance.
TAURUS April 20 - May 20
As Mercury pushes ahead on May 3, it could coincide with a
jolt of awareness that enables you to come to terms with an
issue that has confused you for some time. This revelation
could lead to inner change and a chance to transform thoughts and
feelings so that they're aligned more closely with the outcome you
desire. Also, a lovely link between the Sun and Neptune can be
perfect for a first date or rekindling the flame of romance.
LEO July 23 - August 22
A powerful lunar phase midweek can be an opportunity to
make a decision about a key ambition. If this is something
you've put off recently, events could act as a catalyst,
motivating you to step outside your comfort zone. And with Mercury
forging ahead in your sector of travel, go easy for a few more days.
Delays can still occur for a little while after Mercury turns direct. On
another note, you may have a very tender spot for a co-worker.
VIRGO August 23 - September 22
SAGITTARIUS November 22 - December 21
A surprise invitation could encourage you to explore new
leisure options, and if they include a dash of danger and
some thrills and spills, you'll be even more enthused. You
could find that a relationship that seemed to have stalled now begins
to look livelier. You and another could have great chemistry, but
at this stage it might be best to keep things lighthearted. Finally,
comfort food could call out to you, so go easy.
CAPRICORN December 22 - January 19
Though you know you should be careful with your money, a
lively blend of energies could encourage you to spend the
cash anyway. And with Mercury turning direct and forging a
link with innovative Uranus, you might be attracted to a new gadget
that could revolutionize your life. However, if it really is on expensive
side, it likely won't hurt you to wait. On a tender note, the middle to
the end of the week can be perfect for a delectable date.
The Sun continues through your leisure sector, encouraging
you to take the time to explore your hobbies and passions.
A lovely blend of energies this week could also encourage
a new romance. And, if you're willing to make the first move, a first
date could be delightful. Any delays related to your home or family
may now begin to ease. When it comes to staying healthy, exercise
that keeps you flexible is key.
This week's good news is that your ruler Mercury pushes
forward on May 3 in your sector of friendship and community.
This could coincide with an unexpected opportunity that
you may have turned down earlier, much to your chagrin. It seems
that it may come around again for you, and this would be the time to
grab it. On another note, listening to your intuition or dreams could
bring guidance on a career matter.
LIBRA September 23 - October 22
A friend or loved one could spring a surprise on you,
particularly midweek. If a plan has seemed set in stone, things
could change over the days ahead and require you to be
flexible. With Mercury pushing ahead in your sector of relating, there will
likely be fewer misunderstandings and more chances for constructive
exchanges. Much as you may want to reach out and help others, you'll
need to be firm if you need time to recharge your batteries.
AQUARIUS January 20 - February 18
With a focus on your home and family sector, you may feel
like taking a step back from life and enjoying a little selfcare. This can be very good for you, as you've probably
had a very busy few weeks and need this chance to unwind. In
addition, Mercury turns direct midweek, which can allow you to push
ahead with any projects that have been on the back burner. At the
same time, an exciting opportunity could open up for you.
CANCER June 22 - July 22
A Quarter Moon can encourage you to move in new circles,
even if your values and ideals differ widely. Opening your mind
to new ideas can lead to new friendships and opportunities
you may never have considered before. Also, with Mercury pushing
forward in your sector of career and ambition, you may find that the
pace speeds up regarding a business venture or career plan. Even
so, it would be just as well to expect the unexpected around May 3.
SCORPIO October 23 - November 21
Be prepared for one or two disruptions this week that could
actually work in your favor. An unexpected event could jolt you
out of your complacency and encourage you to get moving in
order to salvage an opportunity or embrace an idea that has positive
consequences for you. With Mercury pushing forward as of May 3,
you may find that delays at work or concerning computing equipment
gradually sort themselves out, enabling you to get on with the job.

PISCES February 19 - March 20
Although Mercury forges ahead midweek after its retrograde
phase, it might be just as well to avoid splurging and
impulsive spending, particularly over the next two weeks.
A lovely aspect could encourage you and another to draw closer,
perhaps as a result of confiding in each other. Whether this is a
friendship or romance, you could find that something special develops
between you that leads to a strong and supportive bond in the future.
