Step into spring at the IMA
Discover nature indoors and out across the IMA campus.
INDIANAPOLIS, March 2, 2017—With spring in the air, the Indianapolis Museum of Art gears up
for a new season of art and nature experiences.
Relax and unwind as you stroll the beautiful gardens filled with 250,000 blooms in the exhibition,
Spring Blooms: Celebration of Color. Simultaneously, explore the world of birds through prints by
the famed John James Audubon inside the galleries with Audubon: Drawn to Nature. Test your
golf skills on this year’s Mini Golf at the IMA course, designed by artists and inspired by the
nature all around us. With experiences for all ages, the IMA is the perfect destination for spring
holidays like Easter, Mother’s Day and Memorial Day.

FILM: B Movie Bingo: Cobra*
March 2 / 7 p.m.

B-Movie Bingo makes an interactive game out of the most awesome movie clichés ever
committed to celluloid. To play, grab a bingo card and look to fill squares like “Long Boring Scene
or Male Ponytail,” and “Teamed up with a Rookie or Animal,” while watching some of the worst
(or best) movies of all time. So grab a drink, compete for prizes, and partake in banter with fellow
movie-nerds at these one-of-a-kind screenings. In Cobra, a tough-on-crime street cop must
protect the only surviving witness to a strange murderous cult with far reaching plans. (R)
EXHIBITION: The Birds of Céleste Boursier-Mougenot: A Film by Ariane Michel
March 3–Aug. 27

This exhibition features a video of the installation from here to ear (1999–ongoing) by French
artist Celéste Boursier-Mougenot. The video depicts a gallery transformation into an aviary
furnished with Gibson guitars and amplifiers. Throughout, zebra finches perch and pluck on
various musical instruments to create a living and improvisational soundscape.

Parents and little ones are invited to experience Cereal Cinema, a unique family-friendly event
created by Indy Film Fest. Cereal Cinema features the two things that every family needs on a
Saturday morning—a fun-for-all-ages classic movie and a cereal bar! Join us for the 1973 classic
about legendary bandit, Robin Hood, as he and Little John match wits with Prince John and the
Sheriff of Nottingham. (G)
EVENT: Reel Film Screening: The Wizard of Oz

Head to the IMA to celebrate both 35mm film and the return of spring with the vibrant Technicolor
classic, The Wizard of Oz. This screening is part of the first-ever “Reel Film Day”, a collaborative
initiative from Alamo Drafthouse and Kodak, to champion the beauty of cinema’s richest and most
enduring format with celebratory screenings at independent theaters across the U.S. A portion of
all ticket sales will go to the prestigious Film Foundation to help fund an upcoming important film

EVENT: Stress Less with Teen Arts Council
March 12 / noon–4 p.m.

The Teen Arts Council is calling all stressed-out teens to take your mind off your worries with a
fun filled day at the IMA. Feel nostalgic with classic board games, rock out to a personal concert
at the headphone music mash up, and help build a community fort. Kick back and relax with a
12:15 screening of Shrek and a 2:30 screening of The Princess Bride in the Toby Theater. The
first 100 students with a valid Central Indy high school ID will have free admission to the galleries.
High school students who are home schooled are also eligible. All ages are invited to let their
stress melt away with TAC.

Bring your friends and join us for a weekend filled with Anime classics such as Akira, The Wind

EXHIBITION: Paula McCartney: Bird Watching

Bird Watching showcases Paula McCartney’s photographs of craft store songbirds placed in
natural settings to create enhanced landscapes. McCartney brought her own birds on trips to the
woods to create the idealized scenes of her fantasies, where songbirds perched patiently on trees
as she photographed them. Support for this exhibition is provided by the David C. & Sarajean
Ruttenberg Arts Foundation.
EXHIBITION: Spring Blooms: Celebration of Color

Experience the IMA as never before this spring when the gardens come alive with a quarter of a
million blooms transforming the campus into a spectacular display of color. New paths will take
visitors on a breathtaking journey, each twist and turn unveiling a new splash of color from
crimson tulips to golden daffodils and much, much more. Bring your friends and celebrate the
return of warm weather in our new Beer Garden. Explore the gardens and Beer Garden with new
extended hours until 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday evenings and until 5 p.m. on Sunday.

EXHIBITION: Audubon: Drawn to Nature

Fly to the IMA to experience Audubon: Drawn to Nature, an exhibition featuring the lifelike
drawings of John James Audubon. From wise owls to playful parakeets these beautiful birds of
North America were carefully studied and documented by Audubon, a leader in ornithology and
conservation. This exhibition is presented by the Eli Lilly and Co. Foundation and The Alliance of
the IMA. Lead support is provided by Wild Birds Unlimited with contributing support from Gary
and Hannah Hirschberg, Goldman Sachs & Co. Support for related education programs is

TALK: Asian Arts Society (AAS): Arnold Chang: The Persistence of Tradition in
Contemporary Chinese Painting, A Personal Journey

Join the founder of the Chinese Paintings department at Sotheby’s, Arnold Chang, for a
fascinating look on the elements of his career as an artist, curator and auctioneer. Chang’s own
landscape paintings were recently featured in a collaborative exhibition with photographer
Michael Cherney at the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco.

Celebrate Earth Day at the IMA with Planet Indy films. The Messenger explores our deep-seated
connection to birds and warns us that the uncertain fate of songbirds might mirror our own. Su
Rynard takes us on an engaging, visually stunning, emotional journey, one that mixes its elegiac
message with hopeful notes and unique glances into the influence of songbirds on our own
expressions of the soul. This Changes Everything is an epic attempt to reimagine the vast
challenge of climate change. Directed by Avi Lewis and inspired by Naomi Klein’s international
non-fiction bestseller, This Changes Everything, presents seven powerful portraits of communities
on the front lines.

The Earth is dead. In a time when solar flares have scorched the earth, when plants can only

part by William Lamson’s A Line Describing the Sun, part of the IMA’s permanent collection.

EXHIBITION: Crazy Quilts: Stitching Memories

Crazy quilts were extremely popular throughout the United States in the 1880s and 1890s. The
fashion embraced asymmetry and bold colors and made the structured patterns of traditional
quilts seem outdated. This exhibition traces the brief history of this unique style of quilting in the
context of the period’s increasing industrialization and explores how women expressed their
creativity through these crazy quilts.

Kick start your weekend and revive a little nostalgia during Beer Garden Game Nights! Enjoy

WORKSHOP: Air Plant Garden Workshop

Air plants are popular and sculptural tropical plants that lend themselves to a wide range of
decorative applications. They grow perched on trees in their natural habitat and require no soil to
grow. In this class with IMA’s Marian Keith, participants will create their own wood-mounted air
plant garden, while also learning the basics of care and cultivation. All materials provided and
advanced registration required.

WORKSHOP: Color from Nature: Plant Based Dyes

Local textile and fiber artists, Bonnie Carter and Marsha Ward, will lead this hands-on workshop.
Learn preparation and use of vegetal materials to dye wool and fabric. Participants will dye yarn
traditionally and pound flowers to transfer natural colors to paper. All materials provided and

EXHIBITION: Elegance from the East: New Insights from Old Porcelain

This exhibition features exceptional examples of Chinese porcelain made specifically for export to
Europe and the young United States. Examined are the reasons for their popularity, their variety
and the ways in which their forms and decoration were adapted to Western tastes. Beautifully
displayed in the historic Lilly House, these objects tell a story of wealth and commercial trade
linking Europe to the Far East.

Come participate in the Teen Arts Council’s TASK Party, an experimental art party created by
artist Oliver Herring. TASK parties have three rules: create tasks for the TASK pool, select a task

This summer, explore the natural world on our brand new mini golf course that’s perfect for the
whole family and guests of all ages. Mini Golf at the IMA is returning with new, artist designed
holes inspired by the nature all around us. Come putt past lions, through glaciers and learn about
honey bees. Afterwards, grab a drink or snack at the clubhouse before visiting the galleries and
gardens.
