CourseDescription Inthisseminar,studentsinvestigatetheroleofimmigrationandmigrationinshapingNew YorkCity’spast,present,andfuture.Seminartopicsinclude:thefactorsthathavedriven anddrawpeopletoNewYorksincethe17thCentury;thedifferentwaysthatreligion,race, gender,andethnicityhaveshapedimmigrantencounterswithandwithinthecity;the formalandsocialorganizationofimmigrantcommunitiesinsuchneighborhoodsasthe LowerEastSide,Harlem,LittleItaly,Chinatown,Astoria,Flushing,SunsetPark,and Stapleton;therelationshipbetweenimmigrantsandtheirrolewithinthecity’seconomy; theimpactofsuccessivewavesofnewcomersonurbancultureandpolitics;andthe continuingdebatesoverintegration,assimilation,andAmericanization. Readingandwritingassignmentswillbeenrichedbyneighborhoodwalkingtours,guest lecturers,filmscreenings,andmore.Theclasswillalsoreceivetrainingondocumentary filmmakingandotheron-linemediumstohelpenrichtheculminatingproject.The culminatingprojectforthissemesterisashortdocumentaryfilmthatwillbesharedinclassandexhibitedatafinalcommonevent.
