CourseDescription
Inthisseminar,studentsinvestigatetheroleofimmigrationandmigrationinshapingNew
YorkCity’spast,present,andfuture.Seminartopicsinclude:thefactorsthathavedriven
anddrawpeopletoNewYorksincethe17thCentury;thedifferentwaysthatreligion,race,
gender,andethnicityhaveshapedimmigrantencounterswithandwithinthecity;the
formalandsocialorganizationofimmigrantcommunitiesinsuchneighborhoodsasthe
LowerEastSide,Harlem,LittleItaly,Chinatown,Astoria,Flushing,SunsetPark,and
Stapleton;therelationshipbetweenimmigrantsandtheirrolewithinthecity’seconomy;
theimpactofsuccessivewavesofnewcomersonurbancultureandpolitics;andthe
continuingdebatesoverintegration,assimilation,andAmericanization.
Readingandwritingassignmentswillbeenrichedbyneighborhoodwalkingtours,guest
lecturers,filmscreenings,andmore.Theclasswillalsoreceivetrainingondocumentary
filmmakingandotheron-linemediumstohelpenrichtheculminatingproject.The
culminatingprojectforthissemesterisashortdocumentaryfilmthatwillbesharedinclassandexhibitedatafinalcommonevent.

Wewilldoneighborhoodtoursatleasttwiceduringthesemester.Eachonewillbe
betweentwoandthreehourslong.Thetoursaremandatoryandanimportantpartofthe

WritingAssignments
PersonalImmigration&IntegrationEssay
Youwillwritea3-pageessayonyourfamily’simmigrationhistoryandintegration
experiences.Thisincludesgenerationsago.Youwilldiscusswhereyou/yourfamilycame
from,whyyou/yourfamilyimmigratedtotheUnitedState,andwhereyou/yourfamilyhas
settledsince.Youwillalsowriteaboutyou/yourfamily’sintegrationexperiences,
includinglearningtheEnglishlanguage,educationandschools,jobs,religion,identity
formation,andcivicandpoliticallifeintheUnitedStatesandabroad.Inparticular,Iwant
youtothinkabouthowwellyouthinkyouandyourfamilyhaveintegratedandwhathas
madetheintegrationprocessdifficultoreasy.Additionalguidelinesfortheassignmentare

Duringthecourseyouwillbeaskedtofindseveralnewsarticlesfromreputablenews
sourcesaboutanissueorissuesaffectingimmigrantsinNewYorkCity.Youwillthenwrite
a2pageessayincludingabriefsummaryofthearticleandhighlightingthecommunityand
issuebeingdiscussed.Youwillalsoincludewhyyouselectedthearticle,whenwarranted
takeapositionontheissueinthearticle,makeanargumentfororagainst,ifappropriate
andifpossible,drawsomeanalogiestothereadingsofthecourseorotherrelevant
discussions,learning,etc.Youarewelcometocompareandcontraststories,draw
analogiesofissuestodaytotheissuesofthepast,etc.Pleaseincludeacopyofthearticleor
thelinktothearticleselected.Wewilldiscusstheseinclass.

ResearchPaper&InterviewProject
Theresearchpaperandinterviewprojecttogetherwiththegroupshortdocumentaryfilm
willfocusonImmigrants:ContributorstoNYC.Theprojectwillincludetwoindividual
(interviewandpaper)componentstogetherwithagroupcomponent.
InclasswewilldiscussmanyaspectsofhowimmigrantscontributetoNYC,economically,
civically,socially,artisticallyandmore.Youwilllearnaboutthejobsandprofessional
fieldsimmigrantsparticipatein,havedominated,areengagedin,andthroughwhichthey
addtothecity’slocaleconomy,andfacenumerouschallenges.Thiswillincludebutnotbe
limitedtodomesticworkers,artists,streetvendors,taxidrivers,immigrantentrepreneurs,
techstart-upgurus,smallbusinessowners,governmentandelectedofficials,and
professionalslikebankers,doctors,andlawyers.
Theclasswillbedivided,ingroupsofthreeorfour,bydifferentcategories.Youwillselect
anaspectwithinthecategorytoresearch.Theresearchcomponentofthepapermaydraw
onscholarlyliterature,newspaperarticles,websites,reportsbygovernmentagenciesor
non-governmentalorganizations,personalinterviews,andfirst-handobservations.You
willalsoselectanimmigrantadultwithinthecategorytointerview.
Youwillconductoneinterview(ofabout35-45minutes)whichmustincludesomefilm
footagewhichwillbecomeyourcontributiontoyourgroup’sshortfilm.Youwillprovide
anoutlineofyourinterviewguide,conductandrecordtheinterview,andusesomeaspects

oftheinterviewtohelpinformthehypothesisofyourresearchpaper.Wewilldiscussin
greaterdetailinclassbutyouwillusekeythemesfromtheinterviewandcomparehow
wellyourresearch,thetheoriesandtopicsdiscussedinclassmatchtheimmigrationand
integrationexperiencesofyourrespondent.
Wewillsetasideoneentireclasssessiontofocusontheinterviews,anoutlineofquestions,
howtoconsideryoursubjects,wheretofindthem,andhowtoperhapsbeginthinking
aboutaresearchtopicinalignmentwithyourthoughts.
YouwillalsoreceivetrainingandsupportfromourITF,MarissaBellino,onhowtocapture
footage,whattoolstouseforyourfilms,waystocombinefourshortpiecesintoone,and
more.ITFMarissaBellinowillhostaworkshopwiththeclassaswell.

Theclass,insmallgroupsasdescribedearlier,willcreatecreativeshortfilmsshowcasing
yourinterviewsandlearningandthestoriesofthemanyimmigrantNewYorkersfeatured.
Insmallgroups,i.e.samegroupsassectors,youandyourgroupwillputtogetherasection
ofwhatwilleventuallybeaseriesofashortsonImmigrants:ContributorstoNYC.(Youcan
comeupwithabetternameforyourfilms.)
Thefilmshouldbeinformative,creative,andhelpshowcaseyourlearning.Iencourageyou
tousetheinterviews,othercreative(andpermissible)footage,usehistoricalfactsand
statisticsaswellasphotos,maps,drawingsoranyothermaterialyougatherthroughyour
research.
Inthelastclass,youandyourgroupwillshowyourfilmsandpresentyourresearch
weavedintoshort(15minute)presentations.
Thegradingofthepresentationwillnotbeparticularlystrictsincethemainideaofthe
presentationistoshowcasethefilmandforyoutoshareyourinterestingresearchand
learningwitheachother.However,demonstratingequalparticipationandgroupsuccess
willinformyourgrade.
