Singapore, 10 May 2016 – The National Stadium at the Singapore Sports Hub will host
the inaugural women’s rugby test match on 14 May between Singapore vs Hong
Kong. The full international test match will act as the third curtain raiser for the final
HITO-Communications Sunwolves – Singapore’s adopted home-side – match in
Singapore this year.
Head Coach of the Singapore National Women’s Team, Ms Wang Shao-Ing said:
“Playing at the iconic National Stadium will be exciting for the team. The last time
the Women’s 15s team played before a home crowd was during the test match
against Hong Kong in 2012 at the Yio Chu Kang Stadium and this opportunity is a
rare occasion for the women’s rugby fraternity and home supporters. It has been
two years since our last international test and the lead-time has not been long but
the team has been training hard and they will no doubt give their all.”
The Singapore National Women’s Team will go head-to-head against the Hong
Kong National Women’s Team on Saturday to claim crucial points to decide the
teams’ international standings. While Singapore is only 8.97 points behind Hong Kong
in the World Rugby Rankings, this match adds pressure on both teams with the 2017
Women’s Rugby World Cup on the horizon (see Annex A for more information about
the Singapore National Women’s Team).
Said Manu Sawhney, Chief Executive Officer, Singapore Sports Hub: “We are proud
to host a diverse and vibrant calendar of events at the National Stadium, such as
the inaugural women’s rugby test match on Saturday. This will be a very special day
for the team’s family, friends and loved ones, and we hope the whole of Singapore
comes out to support this historic milestone and cheer them on.”
The last two Sunwolves matches at the National Stadium were preceded by a
curtain raiser match that showcased the ability of both past and present local
players in a competitive and inspiring setting.
Commented Low Teo Ping, President, Singapore Rugby Union (SRU): “Singapore has
seen a slew of top-level rugby over the past two months, including the curtain raisers
that were played here at the National Stadium. The myriad of games during the
Super Rugby and the HSBC World Rugby Singapore Sevens this year has piqued the
interest of a diverse audience and inspired many to take to the sport.
The Singapore National Women’s Team comprises of talented and passionate
players from the SRU National Women’s League. The upcoming curtain raiser at the
National Stadium will enable fans to witness the excitement and quality of premier
women’s rugby at one of Asia’s most iconic stadiums.”
Sports Hub has already hosted two Super Rugby matches where the Sunwolves
played the Toyota Cheetahs and Vodacom Bulls on 12 and 26 March respectively.
The match on Saturday against the DHL Stormers will signal the final game for
Sunwolves at the National Stadium this year. As part of the agreement, Sunwolves
will play a minimum of three matches at the Sports Hub each year till 2020.
“Over the first two matches, we have witnessed nearly 20,000 spectators pass
through the turnstile to watch our adopted home team HITO-Communications
Sunwolves play world-class rugby at a world-class stadium. Fans from home and
abroad have come to the National Stadium to watch fast-paced, attacking rugby
at its best. Super Rugby is here to stay and we want this star-studded, high-octane
event to inspire fans and youths, and leave a lasting legacy here in Singapore,”
added Mr Sawhney.
About the upcoming match:
The HITO-Communications Sunwolves and DHL Stormers will go head to head this
Saturday, 14 May 2016 at 7.45pm. The curtain raiser game between the Singapore
National Women’s Team and the Hong Kong National Women’s Team will begin at
5.30pm. Tickets are available at www.sportshub.com.sg.
