End of an era at Copernicus
It is with a great sense of
loss and sorrow that
Copernicus Lodge sadly
announces the passing of
its Chairman, Mr. Marian
(Murphy) Hull. After over 3
decades on the Board of
Directors of Copernicus
Lodge, and the last 9 years
as its Chairman, Marian Hull
passed away at his home
surrounded by family.
Emigrating from Poland at
the age of 9 during the
great depression, Murphy
Hull ascended from
humble beginnings to
become one of the leading
real estate developers and
builders of condominiums
in the Greater Toronto
area, providing over 12,500
housing units. When asked
how he got started in his
building career, he replied
“as a plasterer, and not a
very good one at that”.
His legacy, Hullmark
Centre, a multi-story
commercial residential
tower to be built at Yonge
St. and Sheppard Ave., will
be the centre piece of
downtown North York.
Murphy Hull never forgot his
Polish roots and devoted a
major portion of his time to
Copernicus Lodge. One of
the original founders and
Directors of Copernicus,
Murphy served on the Board
for over 30 years. He was
the driving force in the
funding and construction of
the John Paul II long-term
Centre. It is the premier notfor-profit long-term care
Centre in Ontario serving
the aging Polish community.
Despite advancing illness
and major surgery, Murphy
continued to fulfill his
duties as Chairman by
attending social functions
and Board meetings up to a
month before his passing.
His philanthropic activities
were not only devoted to
Copernicus Lodge. He was
a founding member and
Governor of the York Finch
General Hospital, serving as
Director on the Board for
many years and Chair for 3
years. He also served on
the Board of the Hospital
Council of Metropolitan
Toronto.
Copernicus Lodge has lost
a leader, visionary, builder,
and dedicated individual.
His spirit will continue to
roam the hallways at
Copernicus Lodge and he
will forever serve as an
example of dedication and
devotion to duty and
accomplishment.
The Polish community as
well as Canada has lost a
remarkable man, truly “a
force of nature”.

He did not allow his busy
business and volunteer
activities to consume all of
his time as he was deeply
devoted to family. The
Board, the management,
and all staff of Copernicus
Lodge extend their deepest
sympathies to his wife,
Helen, and their family.
Copernicus Lodge is

recent donation of
$500,000.

New Chairman of the Board elected
He brings to the position a
career of 27 years as an
educator, 14 years as a
Member of Parliament for
Parkdale/High Park, and
over 11 years of volunteer
work.
The Board of Directors of
Copernicus Lodge is
pleased to announce the
election of Mr. Jesse Flis as
its new Chairman. Jesse
has served as a Director on
the Board since 1998 and
as first Vice Chairman.
While in Parliament, he
served as Parliamentary
Secretary to the Ministers
of Transport and Foreign
Affairs, Chair of the
Special Parliamentary
Task Force on Foreign
Affairs, and on the
Canada-USA Permanent
Joint Board on Defence.
He has devoted a major
part of his career to
volunteer service. He is
the Director of the Atlantic
Council of Canada, and
a member of the
Government Relations
Committee of Community
Living Toronto, the
Council for the Support of
Polish Studies at the
University of Toronto, the
Knights of Columbus, and
the Omni Television
Advisory Board. His
accomplishments have
been recognized by many
ethno-cultural
organizations in Canada,
and he is a recipient of
the ‘Order of Merit’ from
the governments of
Lithuania and Republic
of Poland.
Jesse Flis is devoted
to the residents at the
Lodge and takes every
opportunity to visit them
in their rooms and to
participate in every
community activity at the
Lodge. The Board looks
forward to Jesse’s
leadership.
Major face-lift at Copernicus gets underway
After 29 years of age, the
self-care apartment building
of Copernicus Lodge is in
need of major repairs and
renovations. Aging has
taken its toll on the
brickwork and windows.
Work will involve repair of
the brick cladding and
exposed concrete structure
followed by application of a
new exterior insulated finish
system (EIFS) to provide a
durable, watertight building
envelope. This will also
make this building more
energy efficient and
decrease our annual utility
costs. The work has started
and hopefully will be
completed by the end of the
year at a total cost of 1.5
million dollars.
Home have been unsealed
with Ministry’s permission
so that the residents can
now have access to fresh
air in their rooms. And our
main floor Dining Room will
soon be upgraded with
more modern, “seniorfriendly” furniture.
All original carpets in the
self-care apartments have
been recently replaced.
Previously sealed windows
in our Long Term Care
These repairs could not be
possible without your past
and continuing generous

Lodge Foundation.

Board intended to keep
members, families,
caregivers and supporters
of Copernicus Lodge in
touch with significant
events, changes, and
requirements of the
Lodge. It does not replace
the Foundation newsletter,
the Gazette. We hope that
you find the Copernican
informative and useful.

Board of Directors - Changes
Copernicus Lodge would
like to welcome Dr. Ray
Mathews as the newest
member to our Board of
Directors. Dr. Mathews,
now semi-retired,
practiced general
surgery for 42 years at
Toronto Western
Hospital. Dr. Mathews
brings a wealth of
experience and will be a
great addition to our
Board.
The Board of Directors
says thank you and
farewell to the exiting
members, without whose
contributions we would not
be where we are today. It
is with great appreciation
and fondness that we say
goodbye to: Kazia Bladek,
Wanda Chmiel, Mary
Stelmasik, Henryka
Sajna, Joseph Solarski,
Dr. Stefan Kopytek, and
Edward Zielinski.

(Matuszkiewicz). Dr. Mathews,
obecnie częściowo na
emeryturze, praktykował
chirurgię w Toronto Western
Hospital przez 42 lata. Jego
bogate doświadczenie będzie
cennym dodatkiem do naszej
Rady.
Witając nowego członka Rady,
pragniemy podziękować i
pożegnać obecnych członków
bez których wkładu i
poświęcenia nie bylibyśmy

uszkodzenia tynku i okien.
Naprawa wymagać będzie
otynkowania zewnętrznych
cegieł i osłonięcia betonową
strukturą przez
zastosowanie nowego
systemu wykończenia
(EIFS), zapewniającego
trwałą, wodoodporną
