__________________________________________________________________ ~ Vacancy Announcement ~ Director of Nielsen Library #A3C020 Starting Date: July 1, 2017 Position Description: Reporting to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the library director at Adams State University will be an energetic and forward-thinking leader who will be responsible for advocating for the library’s position within Academic Affairs and for collaborating closely with administration, students, faculty/staff, and statewide consortia. This individual will lead the development of a strategic plan that bolsters the ASU “2020” plan. He or she will direct personnel management including professional development, recruitment and retention; and allocate budget resources using a collaborative and inclusive management style. The director will articulate the library’s value through student engagement and data-driven assessment. The director will work towards ensuring a secure financial future for the library. Adams State University is located in historic Alamosa, Colorado, in the beautiful San Luis Valley between the San Juan and Sangre de Cristo mountain ranges. Wildlife abounds in the region and sometimes in town and on campus. The views from our 90-acre campus are stunning and nearby-outdoor recreation is easily found. The valley rests at 7500 feet and is the largest alpine valley in the United States. While Alamosa is a small rural university town, we are just two hours from Santa Fe, New Mexico, 90 minutes from Taos, and 90 minutes to the I-25 corridor which takes you to Pueblo, Colorado Springs, and Denver. Desired Professional Skills and Personal Qualities Skilled Communication with University Administration The library director will work cooperatively on the University's strategic directions with University leaders and with library stakeholders, and will be held accountable for a strong professional relationship between University Administration and the library. 1 Evidence of Project Management The library director will initiate projects and control for outcomes. He or she must not only be able to develop a vision or project, but must also be able to pay attention to the steps required to complete the project. The director will be a good listener, have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and must have experience in building effective teams. Invested in the Success of Diverse and Underserved Student Populations The director will promote student success and inclusive excellence through teaching and learning, and access to and use of library resources and services. He or she must demonstrate knowledge of trends in higher education and technologies, such as online learning and user experiences. The library director will foster mutually beneficial relationships between the library, the academic community, and the San Luis Valley community. Core Responsibilities Direct library operations and provides leadership and implementation for strategic planning. Promote the importance of library programs and services throughout the campus, the community, and the state. Direct personnel management within the library, including recruitment, evaluation, development, mentoring, and retention of personnel. Work cooperatively to successfully continue regional and statewide consortial agreements; some travel is required. Prepare the budget and maintain compliance with University fiscal policies. Work collaboratively with library personnel to promote delivery of strong customer service. Demonstrate awareness of emerging technologies and trends in academic libraries. Direct the management of library collections, programs, and services using assessment tools to inform changes. Work at service desks, including occasional evening and weekend rotations. Work closely with auxiliary departments housed in the library. Oversee building maintenance. Demonstrate the ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies, and advance the university’s commitment to diversity and multiculturalism among the faculty, staff, students, research, teaching and community outreach, with relevant programs, goals and activities. Minimum Qualifications MLS from an ALA accredited institution A minimum of five-years academic library experience A minimum of three-years supervisory experience 2 Preferred Qualifications Experience working with consortia and other resource-sharing groups Experience developing mentoring relationships Experience with rural communities Spanish language fluency Salary/Benefits Salary range $70,000-$75,000 (annual contract).
