Expresiones reflexivos Using Reflexives Reflexives Reflexive constructions consist of a verb and a reflexive pronoun. Reflexive pronouns are used when the object of a sentence is the same as the subject (Yo me lavo/ I wash myself,) Forms of reflexive pronouns: Yo ----me Nosotros-----nos Tú-----te Él, ella, Ud. ----se Ellos/ellas/Uds. -----se Note that reflexive pronouns are exactly the same as direct and indirect object pronouns, except for“Se” Yo te lavo Yo me lavo I wash you I wash myself. “Se” is used for “él, ella, usted, ellos, ellas and ustedes”. Elena se lava Elena washes herself. Ustedes se lavan You guys wash yourselves. Reflexive pronouns also go before the verb like indirect or direct object pronouns. Pedro se lava not Pedro lava se. Lavarse To wash oneself Yo me lavo I wash (myself) Tú te lavas You wash (yourself) Él se lava He washes (himself) Ella se lava She washes (herself) Usted se lava You (sir) wash (yourself) Nosotros nos lavamos We wash (ourselves) Ustedes se lavan You guys wash (yourselves) Ellos se lavan They wash themselves Conjugating a reflexive verb In the unconjugated form, reflexives put the pronoun “se” after the verb: lavar + se = lavarse To conjugate a reflexive verb change “se” to match the subject. Yo= me, Tú = te etc.. Yo lavar me Put it before the verb instead of after. Yo me lavar Then conjugate the verb normally. Yo me lavo If you have two verbs together, the pronoun can either stay where it is. Yo necesito lavarme Or go before the first verb. Yo me necesito lavar. Sometimes an unconjugated reflexive is used after the word “para” meaning “in order to do sthg”. In those cases the pronoun changes to match the subject but stays in the same place. Volvi para lavarme I came back to wash.
