This should be stated in a note from your Sunday School or junior church teacher if possible. The note for the first half of the year can still be turned into the club secretary Mr. Corbett! Coming Soon...Sparks-a-Rama!! Hey Sparkies, one of the most exciting days of the year is approaching! Sparksa-Rama, our annual giant game time with Awana Clubbers from other area churches, will be on Saturday, March 25. Practices begin the last Saturday in February! We hope YOU can come out and play!! Bring Your Parents to Awana on February 22! Awana is even more fun when your parent(s) stay to see everything we do during Club! Parent’s Night is Wednesday, February 22th. Invite your parents to stay with you that night, and watch the goings-on. They can help you review your sections during Handbook Time, listen to the story at Green Meadow Time with you, and cheer for you at Game Time! It is also “Twin” Night so you and your parent can dress like twins! “Soup”er Bowl Night This time of year we are thinking about the cold and of course the “Big Game”. We all know that there are many who are less fortunate, and won’t be watching the game, might not have a warn place to stay, and might not even have something to eat. We thought it would be a great idea if we could help out in a small way one of those hardships. I would love to see each child bring a can or box on nonperishable food this week. It is a small way of helping others, and perhaps make someone’s day a little bit more Super! This year it is being held at Faith Baptist Church in Manchester. Faith Baptist Church 53 North Mammoth Road Manchester NH 03109 The event starts at 1pm, participants need to arrive at 12pm. PACERS – A PACER is a Clubber who can achieve the goal of perfect check-in, each week, for a whole month (they have their Bible, Handbook, Uniform, and Dues each week), and on top of that, “sets the pace” of completing an average of 3 sections in their Handbook, for a whole month. This top award is difficult to earn so these Clubbers deserve a little recognition & a big round of applause for their hard work and achievement! Pacers for November Ali Wolgamott, Contessa Silva Clubber of the Month – to earn this excellent Truth and Training Club award, the T&T Clubber must have perfect attendance for the month, achieve highly in their Handbook, as well as set a great example of an Awana Clubber for others to see. Perfect attendance means having your Bible, Handbook, Uniform, and Dues each week. If you must miss Awana for an emergency or illness, have a parent write a note and your absence will be excused. The purpose of this trip was to help rebuild some houses for families who lost their house when Hurricane Matthew hit in October of 2016. They spent 10 days in Haiti, returning home on January 9th of 2017. After the team landed in Haiti, in the city of Port au Prince, they gathered all their luggage and loaded up on to a school bus. Then they took a 6-hour bus ride to a village called Grandbouchi. This village is a small fishing village along the southern peninsula of Haiti. It had sustained a lot of damage from Hurricane Matthew. We stayed very close to the ocean, sleeping in tents. The Pastor of the village church and his wife fed us all of our meals each day we were there. We ate a lot of rice and beans along with vegetables and freshly squeezed juice. They fed us very well, and the food was awesome! The 2 houses we were building was a couple miles away from where we were camping. There was a lot of work to do when we arrived, as only the foundation of the houses had been built before we came down. Many of the people from the village, as well as the families who would be living in these houses, helped us with the work. Even though we didn’t all speak the same language, we were still able to work well together, and have fun together as well. We worked hard every day we were in Haiti, only taking half of one of the days there to rest and relax at the beach. And the hard work that we as well as the Haitians who were also working paid off. When we left, the floors and all of the walls for the 2 houses were done; only the roof needed to be put on to complete the house for the families to live in. Even though we didn’t get the roof on, we did build the frame for it, so all that was left was to put the frame up, which the people there will be able to do. It was very hot in Haiti, and working hard each day was tough in the heat. But God gave us the strength to be able to work in the heat so that we could show these families the love of God through helping them. Calvary Bible Church Awana Club Newsletter www.cbcderry.org Page 5 145 Hampstead Road Derry, NH 03038 From the Director’s Chair “David is not my King” The election for President of the United States has been a bit ugly this past year. We have had a lot of name calling, dirt slinging, and a lot of unkind things being said about each other. Even now, that the country has elected their President, there are a lot of people still very unhappy with the outcome, and are complaining very vocally about it. Even you clubbers, who did not get to vote, because you are still children are feeling the impact of all this negativity about the choice of a new leader. However, this is nothing compared to the time when David became King of Israel after the death of King Saul. If you take a look at 2 Samuel 2-5, you will see the long and difficult road that David had to take when he became king. The tribe of Judah (his own tribe) quickly accepted him and made him their king, but the rest of Israel chose Saul’s son Ish-bosheth and made him their king. This started a battle within the country between the two sides. This was more than name calling and protests. This included a real fight called the Battle of Gibeon where hundreds of people died. Then Saul’s general Abner chose to join David in his cause only to be betrayed and murdered by David’s man Joab. King Ish-bosheth is then murdered by men who thought that it would please David. It did not, so David punished them. Finally after 7 ½ years of battles, killing and scheming Israel finally accepted David as their King. In 2 Samuel 5:2 we even see that they knew all along that God had chosen David to be their king, but they still wanted to refuse. I am not in any way trying to compare President Donald Trump to King David, but I do see that these choices can be very divisive to a country and even to God’s people. I do want us all to take comfort in the words that God give us in Romans 13:1 “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.” Give God the glory, because he is in charge of all things!
